The subject says it all. Do we have anyone in a position of power that could help make life easier for us, especially when we're looking for jobs?
Like it or not, LGBT organizations like Human Rights Campaign (HRC) are the closest thing, at least in the US. HRC maintains a non-legalese summary of laws state by state. If the URL I put in doesn't work, hit their main page, and scroll down to the link that says Laws in Your State.
A few states and the District of Columbia list "personal appearance" as a protected right.
HRC -- Laws in Your State
DC goes further than that, protecting 'hair style'.
I am the Senior Adviser to Senator John Kerry (Democrat-Massachusetts.)I do not have long hair, but I often read the board on occasion. I am not a politican, but I work for one, and I have all major Democrats including but not limited to Former President Jimmy Carter, Former President Bill Clinton, Former Vice President Walter Mondale, Former Vice President Al Gore, Senator Ted Kennedy, Senator Harry Reid, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Joe Biden, Former VA Governor Mark Warner, IA Governor Tom Vilsack, and NM Governor Bill Richardson on my speed dial. If anyone here in the United States has any problems dealing with equality and civil rights, etc., contact me and I will forward it to the right place.
Now, if only your hypothetical R counterpart would post. No fight for civil rights in the US is won (or lost) until politicians from *both* parties are on the same side.
i guess that's why the law is so favourable in DC - nobody but Democrats to all intents and purposes.
We do have a few right wingers here (not me, I'm a liberal) but I doubt if we stand much chance of getting the GOP on board with anything like a federal version of the DC Human Rights Act, for example.
At least Carl is offering help. Nobody has asked him to do anything, though.
I would like to say that legislation making hairstyle a protected class (as it already is in DC, right under the noses of Congress) would make our lives easier. I feel blessed that my bosses actually _can't_ tell me to get a haircut. That's worth money in the bank to me. Nobody should have a right to make anyone alter their physical appearance to get a job (except maybe in acting!).
No offense was intended.
My real name is Jose Sarmiento Lardizabal II, and I live in Moscow Mills, MO. The company that I'm having trouble with is Walmart. I thought it would be a no-brainer to get a job there, considering my experience, but they still haven't called back.
I live in Missouri. Can you still help me?

Of course I can still help. We in The Democratic Party currently have over 126 pending lawsuits against Wal-Mart for many reasons, from civil rights to FEC Contribution Violations. I have forwarded your message to the Democratic National Committee Department of Civil Rights, Markos Zuniga (owner and founder of Daily Kos,) and to the Expose Wal-Mart Political Action Committee. Another suggestion I'd have for you is that On November 7, there is an important election in your state for the US Senate seat. Democrat Claire McCaskill is running against Republican Senator Jim Talent, and every Republican we get rid of helps America's Fight for Equal Rights. Good Luck!
Carl, we appreciate any assistance you are able to offer.
Since there are so many here from different walks of life, we try to remain non-political here on this board. I am probably one of the most conservative on here; a Republican and in business for myself. I love to engage in political jesting; the majority here have decided that this is not the place for it; and I agree.
And even though I disagree wholeheartedly with your statement, I will refrain from responding beyond that so as to not enter the political forum here. Everyone who has a common interest in long hair should feel welcome here.
Big George
If a party puts "prohibiting hair length discrimination" in their platform, then partisan advocacy would seem on-topic here. Until then, although I have strong feelings about one party over the other, and those feelings perhaps are not the same as George's, I do have to agree with George in saying my feeling is that political advocacy is inappropriate here.
Didn't we just cover the same ground on the topic of "religion", a sub-branch of politics, earlier this month? [grin]
Bill
There really needs to be something on the books that prevents organizations from demending hair cuts on us guys. I have no problem keeping my hair neat in different styles and dressing nice, but to tell someone, you have to chop of you hair so you can work for us is a little much. It would be like me starting up a business and telling my applicants they have to get their eye color changed in order to work for me. If I can't enjoy life being who I am, then whats the point of living?
