Well, I haven't seen many introductions here, so I hope I'm not doing anything wrong by making one! I've been lurking around the board for about 2 weeks now, waiting to make an appropriate entrance.
Not too good with introductions at all, so..I live in Minnesota, and I'm growing my hair out! I have been growing it out since October 2004, and only started treating it seriously when I started browsing these forums 2 weeks ago (It's changed me already!) Before then I combed it roughly to get it in order, sometimes blow dried it, rinsed, lathered, AND repeated! All of the snapping is probably the reason I have bad frizz, but I am not going to start over from scratch because I'm still satisfied with how it looks right now. And it certainly beats the alternative of hacking it off! As for my goal - terminal length, of course! It's always been a fantasy of mine to have hair down to my knees, and I've always had longer hair (than the normal, is what I mean to say!) I finally decided to grow it out after I shaved my head and haven't had second thoughts since then.
I thought I would say, before adding the mandatory pics, that I envy a lot of users on this board -
João, for having wonderful hair that reminds me a little of my own, and having started around the same time as me as well (Give or take about 6 months, right?)
Vampy, for (once) having a perfect example of hair that I'd one day like to get!
Deanof316, for the great texture
Trolleypup .. well, I've never seen more amazing hair on anybody
And Ardroth, for the color and texture! (By the way, from Bothildir?)
The only reason I singled those users out is because I've found similarities in their own hair to mine, so I'm definitely not saying I don't admire everyone else's hair!
Now, it's worth pointing out that this is definitely not something I would normally say, I don't think I'm _that_ obsessed with long hair, but it's the purpose of this board to discuss, right?
So, without further ado, I present my own! This would be the 21st or 22nd month (I'm not sure exactly when I started growing it)
http://llsc.us/hairfront.jpg - from the front
http://llsc.us/hairside.jpg - from the side
http://llsc.us/hairback.jpg - and, from the back!
I was going to wait for a sunnier day so that it stood out a little more, but alas, we've had rainy weather for a while now.
So, that just about concludes my post! Thank you for the reading, the community, and I hope to enjoy .. err.. terminal stay here.. he..hehehe..he..
Welcome, Gylfi- glad to have you aboard!
Your hair looks great! Keep on growing, and you'll find a lot of help from the folks on the MLHH. You will look awesome at terminal length!
Thank you for the welcome! I've already found lots of help from the folks here - I didn't even know what terminal length was or meant until a couple of weeks ago.
And now I can hardly wait!
Beautiful hair, Gylfi, and no, you weren't doing anything wrong by introducing yourself. It seems like it's been a while since we got an introduction -- sometimes they're much more frequent; must have just been a little lull we were in or something.
Anyway, welcome to the board, and I'm sure you're going to enjoy posting and reading here.
Do you have red highlights in your hair? Or is that your natural color? Either way, it looks great!
peace,
dino
Well I'm glad that I'm breaking a lull then!
I don't have any highlights in my hair, but in the light I've noticed it has lighter spots and darker spots. I can notice a hint of red it in the light, but I think it must just be that - the light.
I actually think my hair is rather dark, but it could also just be that the only times I usually look at are in dark environments!
I actually used to be (very) blonde up until I was 8 or 9, then it suddenly got very dark.
I'm digressing a little, but thank you very much for the welcome!
Nice intro, Gylfi, --- and WELCOME! Great pics, too!!
I'll trade you my hair length for your hair thickness, OK? I'd be happy to trade hair-color, too (mine's getting greyer with every passing day)! Anyway, just want to say to all you youngun's: "For heaven's sake, don't wait... grow you hair out loooooooooong, --- especially best to start while you're young!!! I wish I hadn't been so hesitant when I was your age. I was too preoccupied at the time with what "others' thought if I grew my mane out... But now, I could care less!!!!!
Anyway, take care. And hope your Midwest summer ends on a better note soon (I was born and raised in Illinois, so I know that part of the country well). And again, welcome!
- Ken in San Francisco
We've been having an unusually warm summer this year and the rainy days seem to be the only relief from it, so I'm happy for the weather! I imagine San Francisco is keeping pretty cool, I'm actually going there in only a couple of weeks, and then up to Cupertino for a few days too.
And as for trading hair, I'd be more than happy for that too! But I think we've both got something that matches us best, no? Actually, I had admired your hair plenty when I first joined here too, but I tried to keep the admirations in my first post to something that my own could relate to! I think it is really wonderful how your own hair has that spectrum of colours and shades in it - I can't imagine the grey in there being bad at all. I'm reminded of ChrisG's white streak too, I think there's a lot of unique colours and consistencies in the mlhh userbase.
Thank you also for the nice welcome, I'm very happy to be here now!
Hey there Gylfi =)
Thank'sfor the nice compliment on my hair =) I find amazing that yours is already that lenght, awesome growth =)
I just have to wish you the best luck, and to keep on trating your hair well. You're right, there is no better place for learning about hair care and also for friendship than here in the Men's Long Hair Hyperboard. Always keep us updated fella, I'm curious to see your progress =)
You're right, we started about the same time, I started on the 12th September 2004 =)
Let's head to terminal!!!!
And gongratulations so far =D
Ahh, so we started closer to the same time than I thought! The compliment on your hair was well-deserved, I've been envying and admiring your progress for a while.
As for my growth, it's actually a nuissance with my fingernails because I need them to be short for my hobbies - but I'm very lucky that the same thing that affects their growth is the same thing that affects hair growth!
I'll definitely be sure to post any significant updates that I have - maybe we'll reach terminal at the same time too?
Good luck, and thanks also for another nice welcome!
Fab! Your hair looks great in every way; what more could you ask for...
Thanks a lot for the compliment, but I can think of at least one thing - terminal length!
Enthusiastic welcome to the board Gylfi!
Well lurking for 2 weeks was shorter than I did, must have been more like 3 since I was waiting to get a digital camera so I coul introduce myself properly too so I know what you mean about a good entrance.
And what an entrance, if your hair looks that good (and it does look fine to me) mistreated as you say, than I can't imagine how much better it will be when you are really thinking about it :)
The front picture is awesome and the kind of relaxed, hair everywhere over the shoulders look I hope I get too :) Thats about the length I pictured when I first dared to imagine (and hope for) myself as a longhair. Incredible hair Gylfi, you should be proud of it, it wasn't so abused as you think.
I was getting impatient with the lurking, otherwise I would have waited for that sunny day!
And thank you very much for that compliment too. When I made this topic, I had mostly expected to get some empathy and some tips on what I can do to improve it, needless to say I'm a little overwhelmed with the response. It actually looked a lot worse two weeks ago, before I started lurking here and taking it seriously - it was after I started strictly fingercombing and massaging my scalp, shampooing only once (with a mild shampoo), and rinsing that conditioner off with cold water that it started looking and feeling way better. I used to keep it tied back because it got a little too frizzy, but almost immediately after I made these changes I've been able to wear it freely down over my shoulders without worrying about it at all! It lies more flat, wavy, and resillient! It's amazing what just a few little changes can do for you. Now I'm even enthusiastic about it again..unfortunately, with that comes a little impatience now, hehe.
As for your own hair, I just made a reference to it a couple of posts below - I think that white streak is very, very cool. Like somebody said before, it will look astouding once your hair gets even longer, and I definitely can't wait to see how that progresses too. I'm guessing your goal is past the shoulders too then?
Anyways, good luck with your own hair, and thanks, once again, for another nice welcome! I love this board very much already :)
I am glad those changes you made have changed your hair so much. For some reason I have done the same things, fingercombing, one shampoo a day (any less often my hair looks stringy and I prefer frizzy to that) but mine is still frizzy no matter what I do. I should try these bottles of anti-frizz serum I have lying around but I haven't tried them yet. I guess some hair needs more help than others.
Thanks for the compliment on my hair, without the grey it would have nothing really much to recommend it :( , I wish it had more life to it, oh well. It may yet if I start to really take care of it which I haven't been either.
I don't have a final goal yet beyond the all over the shoulders thing :)
Glad you found us!
You are looking at it a little pessimistically! I suppose it's 'to each his own' with these things, but I prefer your form over mine, I was even considering chemically straightening mine at one point, but I'm starting to like the way it's turning out. And I don't think I'd ever chemically alter anything now after learning more about these things!
And you are making it seem like that beautiful grey streak is dispensable, but anybody could say the same about things in their own hair too! Like I think without the waves in mine, it wouldn't have any character at all either. I think you have a lot to appreciate in yours, and I hope you do!
Welcome Gylfi, your hair looks great. Keep growing it.
Absalom
Thanks Absalmon, and it's definitely my intention to do so! Maybe I'll get mine as long as the longhair poster boy some day? If I were that long at terminal I'd be ecstatic.
Good luck with your own hair ventures!
Just realized after circling through here again that I've spelt your alias wrong - I'm really sorry, it was the first thing I replied to after waking up.
Welcome Gylfi, you will find nothing but cool people and bags of support here.
Your is magnificent by the way!!! Don't be a stranger!
That should be 'your hair is magnificent', Doh, sorry.
It certainly feels like I've already found just that! Thanks for the compliment on my hair - I don't plan on being a stranger around here.
I've been looking at the progress of your own hair, and I thought you actually looked good with both short and longer hair! You even look good when you're passing through the beginning of the awkward stage, which is really something to be proud of!
Thanks for the welcome, and good luck with your own hair (Not that I think you need the luck at all), hopefully you'll make it to the goal you have set. I'm actually excited to see your progress!
Thanks for the kind words Gylfi.
The first year growing out seems to have taken forever, so I'm hoping the second will be more fruitful as it will be adding to the length.
In my personal experience, the first year felt like it took forever. Afterwards though, once it had grown enough to be 'long', it started feeling like it was taking no time at all! I suppose it's because once it's long it has finally passed through all of those annoying stages - going from short to awkward to mildly long and so on. I still remember the first time my hair got in the way of my mouth when I was eating! Doesn't seem like it was that long ago, but in retrospect it was almost a year ago, if not more!
But still! The longer it takes, the more rewarding it feels, right? If hair could grow long in a few months, it wouldn't feel the same being a longhair, would it? :)
Welcome to the board, your hair looks cool!
Are you a black metal fan?
I saw you mentioning Ardroth's black metal project.
Thank you! And yes, I certainly am, I suppose I was right in my assumption then? Not sure if Ardroth knows exactly who he sends CDs too, but my buddy from the Minnesota band Manetheren lent me the album for a couple of weeks, so I was pretty surprised to recognize the alias here.
That's really cool! And yeah, your assumption was right!
Well, that's an amusing coincidence then! Of all the places to run into another black metaller :) I suppose that makes you one too then. We're digressing a little, but it's worth asking if you're involved anything as well?
Yep, assumption is correct :)
I don't play in any bands, but I have a lot of friends in smaller european bands. In October I'll be seeing Emperor plus some more in Norway!
That's pretty cool! I almost made it to Wacken when I was roaming around Scandinavia, but missed it due to time constraints (I should have remembered to plan that in the vacation..)
I've got friends from all over the U.S. who are in USBM projects. Oh, and I mean respectable ones, I know how most people think of USBM :P I've been involved in a few bands in Minnesota too, none too big though. I'm also working on a one man project, minus a session drummer who agreed to help me out. If you've ever heard Bethlehem on Dictius Te Necare, or Silencer (The Swedish one, of course!), that's the approach I'm taking, but maybe a little Celtic folk music to go on the side. I'm very good at doing the theatrical cries like Rainer Landfermann, hehe. If you haven't heard Bethlehem or Silencer and you like post-black metal, it is very much worth checking out!
Sorry if you're uninterested, but I hate to pass up on an opportunity to plug myself :)
And back onto the Subject of Wacken - I'm going to try and make it again in 2007, I'm planning on going to Sweden/Norway, and back to Iceland and Greenland, so I'm sure I'll have time to make it around one of those stops!
Sure I'd like to hear your music, but I must admit to not knowing any of those you mentioned, and don't really know what post-black is.
I've only heard a few USBM bands that I like.
Immortal is playing in 2007. I've never been to Wacken though. Maybe I should.
You and my mom seem to have similar looking hair at that length. Since I take mostly after my mom, I'm curious to know what your hair was like when it was a bit shorter. Was it curlier and then weighed down eventually? Also, what do you do to keep your hair in such good condition?
I take after my mom's hair too :) I went through some older pictures looking for me with short hair, I only found a few from the same event, oh well. I also found one from Barcelona from November 2005, where you can see my hair passing through the awkward stage - you can very much tell that my hair has weighted down since then, at least to some extent.

You can tell it was a little curly too. And as I've detailed in a few posts above, I hadn't done much to keep it in good condition until a couple of weeks ago, and after making only a few changes I had already gotten some drastic results. Right now my 'hair care' routine involves shampooing only once every 3 days with a mild shampoo, applying liberal amounts of conditioner afterwards and rinsing it off with cold water. Afterwards, I've abandoned using combs and brushes altogether, because they pull on my hair very badly and don't do a very good job at spreading the oils from my scalp to my hair - so I've taken up very liberal fingercombing, just a few times a day and it stays tangle free, is able to lie flat, spreads those oils, and feels much better too. I used to blow dry my hair because I was always impatient with it, but I've started just letting it air dry - It only takes an hour to get mostly dry, I used to exaggerate it as taking "a whole day" and I think I started believing myself and that was the reason I had started blow drying.
That's all that I can think of right now. You can tell my hair looked pretty awkward from that picture in Barcelona, so I think it mostly looks good just because it's grown.
Good luck with your hair, I hope what I've said has helped at least a little!
