Hey guys I'm new to this board...amazing community you have going here. Im 18 years old and proud to be longhaired.
I've been growing my hair for around 2 years now, have not had any haircuts but have just got a few concerns.
I feel that as awsome as my hair looks and is, that I havent kept as good care of it as I maybe should have.
My concern stems off the fact that lengths of hair at the back are differing lengths, and my bangs also seem to have differing lengths, with most recent it seems breakage has occured with a few strands at the front and Im just wondering if there is some explanation for this. My theory is down to a regime of heavy washing, straightening (in first year of growth) and brushing issues possibly.
Again its not a heavily noticable thing, but it is something that if not put right could be detrementable in the future, e.g. it may break into more uneven-ness without a trim etc...down to the stress it has had on it previous.
My hair is my pride and its just a little annoying to say it
calmy, that in the process of thinking leaving it to grow without trims, may have in fact been detremental.
Sorry to have gone on so long, help much appreciated...thanks
Much thanks for answers...keep on rocking dudes
I'd say to just start taking better care of it which it you seem to be doing, and eventually everything will work out and fall into place. I think some of the things you are seeing like loosing different lengths of hair is normal.
oh yeah, i'm not sure if you are still doing the things listed below or quit doing them--I previously assumed you had stopped but in case you did not, you should probably quit the agressive washing, straightening and brushing. there are some faqs on care in the links at the top of the board and give good hair care advice.
Thanks a lot dude, yeh I have completely stopped straightening and most recent the washing has cut down a lot, although because of the curley nature of my hair it sometimes "bunches up" if I don't so the urge to wash it is very heavy....maybe I just need more willpower lol.
Thanks again for the words of advice and encouragement
Some folks here will totally disagree with me about this; but I'm gonna say it anyway...
Sounds like you might have damaged your hair a bit, and that now you're starting to see split and/or broken ends (as well as the uneveness that you described). Although I haven't recently done so myself (I'll explain why later...), when I was first growing my hair out, I went in for an annual trim every winter or spring, just to remove the split ends & "clean things up" a bit. The trick is to go to a very reputable hair stylist, --- preferably one who has a "long hair following" (usually that means predominently women). Do NOT, I repeat: do *NOT* go to some cheap hair-cutting place (like "Supercuts" comes immediately to mind, --- I've only heard horror stories!). Ask around, especially anybody who has long hair that looks well cared-for (whether male or female)... it's the only way to find out who's the best hairstylist for longhairs, --- AND THEN BE PREPARED TO PAY A HIGHER$$ PRICE FOR THE BETTER-SKILLED STYLISTS' SERVICE!!! They're worth it, because they know how to listen when you say, for example, "Please take off no more than one inch!"
Not everyone gets split ends. I do, and that's why I'm sharing this advise, --- although nowadays my hair has gotten long enugh to be able to trim off the split ends myself.
Around the 2 year mark is just about where most people first start to notice split or broken ends. A light trim by a reputable professional can do wonders, --- you'll notice the difference right away, just in running a comb through (hair is much smoother & amazingly easy to comb afterwards). I never trim any more off than one inch, --- so believe me, it's hardly noticeable. Just go to the best you can find in your area, and don't risk it if they say they recommend taking off more length than you really want: just walk out the door, and go somewhere else!
A trim once a year, or even once every 2 years will not harm you; in fact, in my opinion, it can only help.

Thanks a lot Ken very sound advice, I think I will go for a trim (was even considering supercuts, not now lol) in a reputable place soon.
