Hi, I have pretty curly hair, and I want to grow it out, for now the end result being a style similar to Hayden Christensen's in Return of the Sith (see link). I understand to grow your hair long you don't cut your hair, but what about the sides? Should they even get trimmed, or do you grow them to the point where that hair, too, gets pulled behind your ears? If they do get trimmed, how do you go about doing that? Go to a hairstylist and just say "I want to grow my hair out, but I need the sides trimmed?" I only ask because now they are starting to get pretty long, and I don't want to grow them if I don't have to.

Yep, that is what most people do. It is your hair so you get to do whatever you like and some people do keep portions short such as the neckline but if you are wondering what is generally done it is to just grow it all. In time you can decide if you don't like the effect and trim the sides.
I'm thinking you mean hair above the ears but if you are talking about sideburns then yes, some people do choose how high they want them and trimming can be done to give the desired look. Again, I'd counsel wait and see how you look naturally.
Enjoy your growth, Mike!
