Fall semester has started at the college where I teach here in North Carolina, and I haven't seen any long haired guys among my students. In fact, I see a lot more buzzcuts than in recent years and the rest have hair at most an inch or two longer. Last year I thought there was a trend toward slightly longer styles, but I haven't noticed any this year.
The only exceptions are a couple of black students with good-looking dreadlocks and there's one longhair who rides past my house every day on his motorcycle with a long polytail flowing in the wind.
The only thing that keeps me from cutting off my hair is the encouragement from the good folks here at MLHH, and knowing that I'm not alone, there really are other longhaired men out there somewhere (although few around here in North Carolina).

Hey I live in N.C. lol I am in wilkes, what about you? In my school, there are only about 6 longhairs (not counting awkward stage), one of my friends has some amazing hair, but dude keep you hair, not only is it cool, it makes you original if there is no one else around with it, be inspiration to others keep your hair! You may inspire someone else to grow their hair out.
Long hair is so common for men here in UK now that one hardly notices it. That is very different to about 5 years ago when I started posting on here (haven't posted for some time).
Ponytails for males seem to be in decline as the younger long-hairs tend to keep their hair loose.
Dear REDNC,
I hope I have not sent an empty post, but this is the real response. I take it you are from the sand hills, but I cann't guess your campus. If part of the state system, then possibly Pembroke. Seems to me we have the basis of a good research project. I live in Asheville, which is 2000' higher in altitude, in the valley. Perhaps it is altitude that leads men to wear long hair, but there is no shortage here.
Then I visit UNC Chapel Hill, Juke, and NC State and discover there is no short of long hair there. Perhaps it is population density.
Whatever, I agree with Dave M. who said if not an exact quote, keep your long hair for you will be an inspiration for others. Long hair is the natural state, and those who cut it for convenience are cutting off a part of their fullest expression.

I am surprised that that is the case there. I am on a college campus way down here in Georgia in the torrid zone of heat near Florida, and there are long hair guys busting out the seams here! Everything from shaggy to really long. There are also lots of short hair, but in all it is a rather even mix of styles.
I grew up in North Carolina. Ugh. Northern California is much nicer!

There are a ton of longhairs in New York. About 1 in 20 guys in NYC have longhair, though it is rare to see it without a ponytail.
Most guys in New York never wear their hair down in public.
Hi Red,
it's good that you set an example as a college professor! You probably will encourage many men to grow their hair, possibly only several years down the road!
On the other hand, I thought that at least some college towns, like Asheville and Wilmington would have a better long hair quota...
Keep it up!

Hey Red, Nice to see another NC person on here. I am going to try to let it grow...Yours looks great. I've got some Native American blood in me and my hair is sorta coarse but full. Gettin' some white in it but that's ok by me. Stumbled onto this website yesterday. It's really inspired me to go long. Getting to the point now where I don't really care what folks think. Talk to ya soon.
