Hey there guys!
I have been trying fingercombing my hair for the last 3-4 days, and I think I have been managing to succeed =)
What I do is to patiently remove every visible tangle on my hair with my fingers and then brush with my precious boar bristle brush, to polish and leaving it silky. I do this in the morning and before going to bed I only brush with the BBB.
Do you think this way i will reduce breakage? And also minimalize sheding?? Is it really effective for removing knots??
I'm happy that I'm almost entering a stage (just 6 months away or so) where I can braid my hair for sleeping, that will be a great relief when it comes to tangles...
Just wanted to share the news and please if you have any advice about it I'd like to ear it =)
Also, tomorrow is my 18th birthday... Oh well, one more year to count =P
See ya!
Try to use dry hands only. As with brushing or combing, always gently work out snarls or tangles. Beleive it or not i know this from brushing out long coated dogs!
Happy Birthday btw!

I've just started fingerbrushing lately too, and I've had very good success with it. I don't even brush afterwards, just because breakage always seems to follow.
When I finger brush, I usually get my fingers through to my scalp and massage the top to work the oils from my scalp down into my hair. My hair lies flat now, it is never tangled anymore, and I think it feels VERY great when compared to how it felt before when I was combing and brushing it. My hair was always very dry before I started fingercombing, but now it's always shiny, and doesn't frizz nearly as much - I'm pretty sure that's because it's a lot more successful at dispensing those oils.
I can't tell you if it's effective for minimizing knots (because I've never had any serious knots), but I can tell you that it's much easier for me to remove tangles without breaking my hair, because I don't have nearly as much control over a comb as I have with my own fingers, so I can adjust my force as I'm pulling my fingers through my hair :) I can also tell you that nothing will ever reduce your shedding - shedding is something that everybody's hair does naturally, shedding is a good thing! It's the breakage that you should be concerned about, it's the breakage that convinced me to stop using combs and brushes altogether!
Good luck Joao, I've always loved your hair and I hope fingercombing works out nicely for you!
Oh, and..Happy birthday of course!
Happy Birthday in advance João!
I think I am going to go back to shampooing less often often (not sure how many days to skip between shampoos though) and maybe fingercombing only for awhile and see how that works. Obviously what I am doing now isnt working well. My hair is SO dry and frizzy and no shine at all. I find myself noticing that everybody has healthier hair.
I was so impressed by Gylfi's turnaround that it gave me hope too :)
I guess this wasn't advice, oh well!
Happy Birthday João!
Hey Chris! I'm very happy to hear that I've at least managed to give somebody a little hope :) The other day when I was looking around my computer for pictures of my hair while it was shorter as a good meter for progress, I found a nice little gem taken a couple months back that might give some more convincing hope too.

It was a little more exaggerated than normal, but that definitely wasn't uncommon for me. And it hasn't even gotten relatively CLOSE to that since I made those changes only 2 weeks ago. Extremely dry, extremely frizzy, and no shine at all. I am cringing from just looking at it again :)
Even if those specific changes don't work out for you, it should at least be proof that things can work, you just have to find the right one! I really hope you don't ever give up on your hair. I've read older posts you've made about how some days you just don't care, and I'm very much hoping that you don't take that a step too far and give up on it because I am sure your hair can look great; it already does.
Happy birthday, dude.
Hey Joao!
For myself, fingercombing is the only way to go..............and luckily I received this tip from EdG who has about the most fantastic long hair of all.
I have a certain way of going about it that I really don't know how to explain exactly, but I will do as best as possible:
Start by dividing the hair at the back of your head into two equal portions and flinging both over both front shoulders. Then tilt your head either right or left so that that side of hair falls all straight downwards. Begin at the base going downwards and wiggle your hand a little throughout the whole process. Then go up several more inches and do the same all the way to the bottom in a number of stages that it takes. Keep repeating these steps until you reach the top. On your way up you will catch the snags only gently and be able to deal with ea. one as they are met with and avoid for the most part a sudden snap or breakage. Sometimes I follow-up with a very wide toothed comb but not usually. The longer your hair becomes the better finger combing is.
The "shedding" you speak of I do not think can be helped as the hair was going to come out anyway even if just walking around and not even touching your scalp. But Breakage! YES!!!!!!!!!! Fingercombing cuts most of that down dramatically.
So far you are doing just great! :-)
And last but not least:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Justin~
