Hey dudes. I've posted on here before but it's been a while. In about 2 months time, my hair will be have been growing for 3 years.
I am of course quite attatched to it, but have for a while been rather wanting a change. I know the longer I leave it the harder it will be for me to cut it, and the less I will want to have such long hair.
I do not trust another person to cut it for me, and would rather do it myself. When I do it, I hope to be able to take it down a few inches at a time, to see how it looks. I doubt I will be able to recreate some of the transient styles I went through during its growth, since the proportions there originated from my starting, short hair style. Still, I may be able to settle it at a "long" but much shorter length.
Has anyone ever successfully cut their hair? Is it possible to just go around the bottom with a pair of scissors? Any advice will be appreciated. I hope to post some pics soon, too.
Thanks

I am in a hurry to go to the shoping center but here you go:
http://feyeselftrim.livejournal.com/ - it's a tutorial on howe to trim your own hair in three diferent ways. I hope it helps!
Let us know how you did!
See ya!
I've cut my own hair for about 20 years now, with only one moment of madness when I got it cut supershort (i.e. a chin length bob). The way this girl describes it is similar to how I do mine, I always part it and bring it forward but I grasp both sides with one hand and cut across the bottom with the other, then trim up any wayward strands and cut in a bit of shape to the sides. The trick is not to cut too much off to begin with so there is plenty of leeway to tidy and even it up without going shorter than you intended. Once, however, I don't know why, but instead of cutting at the bottom of my fist holding the hair, I cut across the top, losing three inches more than I'd planned straight away, lol! So, I had a slightly shorter look than usual for a while, but still, it was okay. There is a nice feel to the way my hair falls and feels lighter after a cut, but deep down there's nothing to beat having my hair as long as it can be.
Joe: I have been cutting my own hair for several years now. Last year I splurged and went to a referred salon and had a trim...a good experience but I was so nervous about the result that it spoiled the rest of the time there...luckily, the result was good...not great but good. That was last August and now it is time for another trim. I want to do it myself this time and think that I want to cut my hair shorter than usual this time...last time I did this I cut about a half inch off each week for several weeks so I could get used to the new "look". Joao David's suggested site is a good resource. It is similar to a set of instructions that "Katherine", who used to post on this site, sent to me two years ago. Good luck on your attempt.
I understand your emotions here, and think I may be able to share some valuable tips to help you out...
First, for many years I, too, cut my own hair, --- both when I was forced to keep it short as a kid & teenager (to keep my dad's hands off it); and also later as a younger adult, when i had it long-ISH. But to cut & style your own hair when it is around or near shoulder-length is VERY difficult to have it look good. Re. my own hair, now that it is at lower back - waist length, it is actualy long enough for me to even out the ends a bit on my own (which is all I do nowadays, since I just really only care about not having split ends).
I totally understand the desire to go back to shortER hair, --- meaning, rather than keeping it "super-long" (which can be a lot of work), a more moderate length is sort-of "the best of both worlds". And, you are wise to cut only a little bit at a time, --- rather than what I did in Y2K... which was that I impulsively decided I wanted to go back to fully short again (which totally devastated me)!
My suggestion, though, is to ask around about any really reputable hair stylist, --- especially asking long-haired friends in your area (since male longhairs are not that common, I found out through a female long-haired friend of mine who she went to). A highly skilled professional hair stylist with a longhaired following is worth their weight in gold (and they parctically charge that amont, too - lol!)... I understand the issue of not trusting another to cut your hair; but if you willing to pay top-$$ for someone with an excellent reputation with other longhairs, I guarantee you you'll be really happy to have gone to someone else, rather than try cutting on your own. I speak from experience on this, and can tell you first-hand that I trust very few people to touch my hair with scissors. But, those that I do trust, I am 100% comfortable and even relaxed with, because I know they HEAR my request to cut off as little as possible.
Good luck on your search for a good hair stylist!

I agree with Ken. I tried cutting my own hair once when I was a teenager and I didn't do a good job! The lady that used to cut my hair has now quit the business. I currenly have waist length/all one lenght wavy hair. I haven't had a trim since 9/26/05 and I am approaching the one year mark. I am not getting another trim, until I can find a hair stylist that I can trust. I plan to ask men and women with hair as long as mine, or close to it for recemendations. Don't cut it yourself, it is not worth the risk of cutting it uneven, or taking to much off.
Good Luck,
Darrin
