Hello folks! I'm getting ready to go to a series of formal events this upcoming labor day weekend, and I'm thinking that it's a good idea to do something with my hair, rather than just leaving it down or tying it back into a simple tail.
Some things I've considered are normal braids, the willie nelson braids, french braids, and buns.
The problem with all of these are...well, I simply cannot do them myself! I know how to tie them on somebody else, but I just don't feel coordinated enough to do it to myself (With the exception of the Bun, I can tie a bun fine, but I wanted something a little more intricate.)
I tried doing even a simple braid on myself, but I just can't keep the three sections isolated. They get intertwined and tangled, and I constantly hear snaps and pops as I'm trying to separate them again.
I need some help! So thanks to whoever can :)
..Oh also, when I tie buns it feels like my hair is being constantly pulled. That can't be a good feeling, so I want to know what I'm doing wrong. The bun isn't very tight, it still feels spongy, and most of the buns I see look very tight and compact.
Why don't you call around to some local hair salons or beauty shops and ask if they braid hair?
"Hello, this is the Hairport."
"Yes, Hi, this is Gylfi, do you braid hair for people?"
"Oh, yes, we can do that. There is a lady here who does the best French braids, and she can do several other kinds of braids too."
"That sounds great, how much does she charge?"
"Eh, she would probably do a french braid for $7.00."
"OK, I don't want any cut or anything, just a braid."
"OK, what time would you like to come in this week?"
"How about 3:00 on Friday?"
"That sounds good. Why don't you bring a picture too of how you want the braid?"
"OK, very well, see you then."
Well, that was certainly an interesting dramatization. I'll probably end up doing that, but I'd still love to know how I can do things myself as I can't afford to go to a hair salon everytime I plan on wearing my hair a certain way.
There are probably some books available to explain how to do self braids, and as well Gollan's site at the top of the page under the links section has some information about braiding.
Joao David who posts here now and again has mentioned "Dreamweaver Braiding". The link is below.

If you want a French braid, I'd get it done by a professional. It's a very elegant look.
As far as a regular braid goes, practice, practice, practice!! It will help if your hair is damp. Also, until you really get proficient, hold the hair together with a hair tie while you braid; just keep the tie loose enough so you can slip it off when you're done. You might try a half-tail braid (see pic) which is a dressy look.
And yes, if your hair feels like it's being pulled when it's in a bun, it's too tight.
Ooh, I like the half tail braid. I've been doing that practice, practice, practice part for a few hours now. It's been demanding on my hair, pulling it hair out everytime I make a mistake and get a few strands from one section caught in another.
I'll try using hair ties until the next time my hair is damp.
