Hi guys,
I was just wondering how do you guys have your hair when you sleep? I've tried leaving my hair down, but i always end up pulling my hair by just moving my head or someting. Its not quite long enough to hang it over the edge of the bed. I've also tried to put it in a pony tail but its a little uncomfortable to sleep on the back of my head.
Any ideas would be much appreciated :-)
Neil
P.S i'd like to join the directory of users as im visiting this place more often. could someone tell me how to.
Try putting the tail on top of your head perhaps, so you don't lie on it.
In my opinion, and if you have the lenght for it already, the best way to set the hair for sleep is to braid it in a simple braid. If you don't have the lenght for it yet I don't recomend using a ponytail because it causes breakage if you sleep with it (at least everybody uses to tell me that). In my case, I simply lie my hair on the phillow and let it be there. When I want to switch the side I'm facing, I simple make my hair "fly away" to the other side of the phillow. It works well for me and I always did it this way, at least after my hair started to be anoying when sleeping. But this method works well, at least for me...
We will be glad to have you in the directory =)
Hope it helped... see ya =)
I don't think braids are simple at all. I've tried but I have no control of what's going on with my hands when I can't see what I'm doing.
Had this problem only a few days ago too, made a post a page or so down. I've gotten good enough at it in just those 3 days that I've been able to use it for sleeping lately, even when my hair is dry now.
Next time your hair is damp, just keep trying it over and over if it's something you'd like to get down, cos I originally thought it would be impossible too.
Guess I should learn to braid something other than my own hair first. That's the trouble, I have no idea how to do it, and I've looked at a webpage that was supposed to help. It didn't, I couldn't follow the directions :)
I usually sleep with my hair down, by which I mean loose, because when I lie down I lift it all up from the base of the neck and sweep it up so that it is all up and away from my face and body. The only other way I sleep comfortably is with braids -- two of them, not one down the back. You may find doing two easier as you will be able to see a bit of what you are doing but once you master it you will find it easier to do by "feel". I would suggest you don't use a mirror to any great degree as it gets really confusing then. To braid your hair try doing this step by step on a front section of hair (avoiding arm ache!)until you suss out the process - after that you will find it easy to do two braids and eventually doing one behind your back will be within your repertoire albeit adopting a different handling strategy, but once the principle is learned you will manage it:
Divide the hair into three sections.
Hold the left section in your left hand between your forefinger and middle finger.
With your right hand hold the middle section between your thumb and forefinger; hold the right section between your forefinger and middle finger.
Now, turn your right hand anti-clockwise - you will see that naturally this takes the right section over the middle section so that they swap places.
Take hold of the newly created middle section with your left hand - you will naturally take hold of it with your thumb and forefinger.
So now you turn your left hand clockwise so that you are swapping the two sections now in your left hand, just as you did with the right side.
You now want to transfer the new middle section back to your right hand but hang on - you're already holding a section! Don't worry. Close your hand so that you can lift your forefinger over the section of hair and voila! You have a nice gap between your thumb and forefinger to get hold of the middle section with.
So now, with two sections back in your right hand, with an anti-clockwise motion you will swap them over and transfer the middle back to your left hand, using a similar strategy to free up your thumb and forefinger to get hold of it and keep the existing section in your left hand separate.
With two sections back in your left hand, the clockwise motion will swap them over etc. etc.
Carry on until there's no hair left.
After the few initial steps you will see what you are doing - simply swapping alternate outer sections over the middle section.
Hope this helps. Sleeping with braids will give you amazing waves the next day when you take them out - the tighter you braid the more intense the waves.
Thank you! I've saved your message on my harddisk, so it doesn't disappear when it gets older. I'll try to do my best :)
Does the hair need to be damp?
Not really but it does help if it is slightly damp, simply because it is more inclined to stay in the sections and not get tangled up. Just to add to the above, if it's not clear, hold the sections high up and move your hands down as you go. If you think your sections are getting tangled with each other just stop, and you will find that if you keep your hair held in whichever hand has two sections in it, you can release the third section and use that hand to separate the sections out again - you can even comb them through to keep the hair smooth and the braid will come out nice and tidy.
P.S. don't worry if you find to begin with the sections are not too even - you will divide them more evenly with practice and getting the technique down first will encourage you to keep going.
I haven't gotten down to practicing yet, I'm sick so I'm pretty much at the computer or sleeping most of the time. I think I'll start by practicing with some cords or something.
I used to use a ponytail, but it started tangling itself in my sleep anyways. Now I put it up in either a bun or a simple braid. Bun is better for me when my hair is damp after a shower or something, otherwise if it's dry I go with the braid.
Dreadlocks can make for a bumpy pillow, so I move my dreads above my head, to where I'm not really laying on them, they shift around, and a couple of times a night I move them back above my head.

If you sleep on your back, consider Willie Nelson braids--one on either side.
FWIW, mine is long enough to hang over the bed but I don't do that because the extra weight feels wierd. I sleep on my side with the hair loose and trailing down my back. The trick? The covers are wrapped around me, and the hair is *outside* the covers, ie, not in direct contact with the skin. If it's in contact with skin, it creates localized sweaty areas which become sticky and pull.
If I don't sleep with my hair in a segmented tail...
...it just ends up in the mouth and eyes!
Hi
I wear a Ponytail mainly in bed less hair tangling up or hair breakage best way is to wear a braid or Segiment Ponytail if your hair is long enough for that !
