I had to go to the post office yesterday to mail something. My hair was down, and as I stood in line seeing that I would be waited on by a man who was probably not much older than me, but who had a very conservative look and haircut, I wondered how he would react to me.
He was as friendly as another human being can be, which was wonderful on the most basic way, AND wonderful because this was a government agency! Often, that is not the case with government agencies.
Anyway later in the afternoon, I was out mowing the lawn. The Postal truck pulled up to deliver the mail. I turned to wave at the man that I expected to be delivering our mail--same guy every day--only to see someone new. And this guy had a nearly white ponytail hanginng out from under his hat, mid back length.
So, "going postal" yesterday was quite pleasant. And, let's add to the list of jobs available to longhaired men at least some civil service jobs--like the US Post Office.

One of our mail carriers has a mid-back ponytail--and at the post office one of the postal clerks (older man with gray hair)has a small ponytail.
I must admit, though, I have never seen any postal employee wearing his hair down.
The guy at our local post office always wore his hair in
a pony tail. I suspect he did it to reduce wind damage
when making deliveries and to keep the hair out of the
machinery.
(They use lots of letter sorting machines here.)
I must be a very forward-thinking person. The last time I gave one whit about what anyone thought about my hair was when I applied for a job at the company I've been employed by for the last 10 years.
Anyway, I'm glad the experience went well for you, I guess.
heh, heh. Maybe you're just more evolved than me. Or, maybe you misunderstood what I meant. I don't know that I cared so much what the guy felt about me as much as that reading social cues, I find, is important. If someone is going to treat me differently because of my hair, I'd like to sort be ready for the fast ball when it comes flying. After all, I was reading his "conservative look" as that of someone who might not be nice to me. I was wrong.
Doesn't that make sense? Or, does not caring about what others think just mean that social interactions cease to exhist? :)
Robert
Indeed, it's been somewhat less than 10 years for me, but still a while since I've really cared much what others think ;)

And I am VERY GLAD the experience went well for you without a guess. Great news! I AM VERY HAPPY FOR YOU. :-)
At our local post office we had one guy who had wonderful
waist length hair. I believe he still works there.
My cousin with waist-length hair works at a post office as well. I'm not sure if he's ever worn it down at work, but I'm thinking it's more of a safety thing than an aesthetic requirement.
I was offered a job as a postman a while back. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take it. So, if you're considering a postal job, don't cut it!
