to grow my hair long. I've always wanted to but didn't have the anatomy. Well, here goes!
Not sure what my wife will say but heck, it's my hair.
I guess the big problem that I have had is the "Big Hair" problem; that's when I always chickened out and got a cut.
Anybody have experience with the "Big Hair" problem and how did you cope with it?
Thanks for the advice...this is a really neat site. I've got a nephew with really long hair; I'll probably refer him to this site. Michael
man, the BIG HAIR is part of the awkward stage and it sucks! I didnt do anything while in the big hair phase - no gel spray mouse or anything of the sort. Hell, i didnt even comb my hair for 2 yrs of growing THAT i do not suggest. Comb/brush your hair often but gently. Dont use hairdryers on your hair, just let it air dry. if the big hair is really killing u and u cant stand the stares, you CAN gel it up and create a do. I just took the stares and comments and am at a satisfied length right now :]
Thanks for the motivation...I'm going to do it. My hair has natural curl and I'm going to give it a shot! Got down just about to my collar and I freaked. Not gonna happen again.
Michael
Good luck and stick with it. My husband is at big hair stage - his also has natural waves and is fluffing out like stupid earmuffs, lol! We can only wait....and wait...and wait.... It'll get there in the end!
Thanks!!! Know what you mean by the earmuffs.
1) I just try not to think about it too much. You can never completely ignore it, but not thinking about it all the time helps.
2) Knowing that it's completely normal to have "Big Hair" at first will definitely help you cope with it. I know because I tried growing my hair long last year but gave up as soon as it entered the "big hair" phase because I thought it wouldn't get out of it. However, I'm trying again after I found this site and read that it's part of the awkward stage. After the hair gets long enough, the weight of the hair will pull it down.
I'm still in the awkward stage, and I've been growing it for maybe 6 months (forgot when I started). I included a link to a picture of what my hair looks like as of today.
Good luck!

Make sure you tell your wife how much you care for her, and that your desire to grow you hair long is inestricapably bound up with your affection, and that it is a public expreession of your affirmation of her --- of course ONLY if this is true. I so, she will not only help you gorw your hair, but will help you style it and at times roll it to appear less chaotic, etc. etc. .
Do not assume that your wife is opposed to long hair. Even if you have heard her make negative comments about long hair in the past considering that she was echo-ing convention. There is always the possibility that your wife has secretely wanted you to grow your hair but out of respect for your autonomy and privacy has failed to ask for what she wants.
I beliee she will support you fully. Tell her what it would mean to you. Ask for her suppoert. I cannot imagine that you will not get it fully.

Anatomy?
Well, as far as I know, "Big Hair" can only be acheived with a blow dryer and several cans of Aqua-Net, so I'm going to assume you're referring to the "awkward phase". That lasts about a year. I found that swimply wetting my hair down, brushing it all straight back, and then dousing it with hairspray helped to keep it out of my eyes while it grew. That's how I survived it anyway.
What do you mean by "big hair"?
