My hair is down to the middle of my back and I keep it mostly in a ponytail. I will be going to Ireland in a couple months and I am wondering what the general mood is about longhaired men there. Anybody know?
The Irish are pretty laid back and long hair is not a big deal in the UK and Ireland in general. I don't think you will have any problems.
In rural areas, you might get a comment or two, but they'll probably be lighthearted. In cities, people don't really give a damn.
Anybody know?
You will be chatted up by everyone and have a fantastic time!!!! if you're lucky you'll find some great REAL irish pubs, get some REAL guinness, enjoy some REAL music and realise most of the population are musical, friendly and long-hair very friendly
Well, a couple of years ago I visited Ireland and there was one time that a bartender ignored me, which hadn't happened to me for many years before that. It wasn't a problem, though. He wasn't the only person serving behind the bar, and one of the colleens was more than happy to serve me a pint of beer. Naturally, he was on older, conservative looking guy.
I wouldn't worry, though. Nobody else reacted to me in an unfriendly way, not even because I'm English! I'm Irish on my mother's side, several generations back, and within minutes of arriving there I felt I was home.
I like my beer, and I have no sense of time, always arriving late for everthing. In other words, I fit in perfectly in Ireland! When I got on the bus outside the airport at Shannon, one of the American passengers was fretting about the bus being late departing. The driver made no move to leave and was unperturbed. What he then said to the passenger was "Sure, when God made time, he made plenty of it"! That's a phrase I couldn't even make up, and the words of a man after my own heart.
Down to serious matters - beer. As an Englishman I like my bitter, and most bars in the Republic have only lager or stout. However, you can get bitter in Ireland. The Irish word for bitter is 'red', and some bars do have red on tap. I did develop a liking for Beamish's stout rather than Guiness, and I drank mostly either that or Beamish's red where I could find it. Of course, Beamish's brewery is in Cork City, and I was in County Cork most of the time.
Just got back from Ireland. Most young men in Ireland have shaved heads. I am an older man and no one said anything to me. I traveled all over southern Ireland went to a differant local pub every night and met the nicest people. No one said anything about my hair we talked sports, economy, what america is like ect. You will have a trip you will long remember
