Hey, everyone
I don't post much around here but have been reading for about two years.
My hair is mid-back legnth and I've been growing it aleast 5 years. I'm thinking to cut it all off.
I mean, I love long hair, but on me I don't like. I have been getting annoyed with my hair. I don't like the way it sits, the frizzy bits and the way it makes me look. It's all starting to annoy me. I come to this site though and it always changes my mind, if only briefly. It's really confusing me. I'd like to have it short (couple inches long) and experiment with the different styles and ease of changing the way you look. It's jsut a big change for me and theres no going back.
I've included a picture of me (not a very good one, but still..)
I say do what you feel is right, your still young so if you want it back in a few years you can grow it back. Experimentation is a good thing it makes you wiser, so if you havent had short hair in your adult life why not give it a try.
If you're thinking of cutting it, be sure to follow the two-week rule.
Also, before cutting it really short, you might want to try something less drastic, like shoulder-length.
I agree. 6 years ago, I had hair a little shorter than what you describe. One day I thought, "what the heck am I doing with long hair?", and I buzzed it off. I was happy for a short while, but then I began to want long hair again. I have only recently began to grow it longer.
So my advice to you is to wait two weeks to see how you feel.If you still want a change, do it in stages as doug suggests. If you still need more change, go another step. You may end up with a really short cut, but at least you were able to try every thing in between.
Good luck,
Bruce
I agree too! my friend had long hair and he got annyed too, but he cuted it off, and then after a year he felt he wanted medium hair, then after longer and longer hair, until he got it were he cutted off!
That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Maybe try a length that is much more managable, like maybe just resting ton the shoulders. Before you cut it to a few inches, try that first :)
I get the feeling you're more frustrated with the constant maintenance than you are with having long hair, so I'm going to agree with Doug. Give it a couple of weeks, and if you still don't want it, just trim up to about shoulder length and see how you feel. If, after another couple of weeks you're still not happy, then go for the crew cut, or maybe something just a few inches longer.
Happiness is the deciding fact--ALWAYS.
Sure, follow the two week rule and then if you still want to cut it--then go right ahead.
5 years ago you were a different person than you are today. Your goals and ideas about Life have changed...so perhaps your original reasons for having long hair have changed too.
Follow your instincts. Don't keep your hair if it makes you UNhappy...
Isn't Life hard enough?! You've had years to see what having long hair was like and now, perhaps it IS time for a change.
Whatever you decide...
Good Luck!
The decision is entirely yours, but please remember that growing hair takes years longer than cutting it off does.
Looks pretty cool to me, but if you decide to cut it, I would suggest the following:
Talk to a friend who fancies themselves as a hairdresser. They may well enjoy the practice. Try shoulder-length, then medium-length, then various other styles if you're still not happy.
THEN try the ultra-short stuff.
IN terms of appearance NO it looks good but it is what you want that matters.
I suggest that you do nothing for two weeks (the two week rule) and then see how you feel. Then if you remain unsure about it try getting it cut from mid-back to should blade length. That will.
get rid of some weight
Tidy up damaged ends etc
Feel short yet remain in the long hair camp.
Then go with that for a weeks and see how you get on. You can well have hair which is too long and a nuisance to you but be extremely happy with some 6-9 inches shorter yet still firmly in the long hair mould.
Buzzing is quick - and the opportunity to regret lasts about three years.
I've read a lot of stories like this, such as "my hair is too straight" or "my hair is too curly"..even though I'm relatively new to this board!my question is this: why can't we be happy with our hair the way it looks?it's what makes us "individual"!!
I think you look good (but i'm biased), but you're young, it'd grow back in time if you hated it - just make sure the girl of your dreams doesnt fancy you as you are then runs a mile if/when you do something drastic (then again you're young LOL)
Well I didn't grow my hair nearly for as long as you, only for about 25 months. I got tired of it too, cut it off. For a while I thought it was great having short hair and not taking care or washing a lot of hair. But months later I started to miss it, realized that long hair just wasn't something I had to wash and take care of it was part of my identity. Just think about that before you cut it... you'll look just like nearly every other person, you lose a part of yourself I think...
No! (no need to read your message!) n/t
Hi Dave,
I think your hair looks phantastic! Congratulations to growing it out for five years to such phantastic length! That's a lot of patience, and a lot of commitment, in my eyes.
Before you do change something: Make sure you are not feeling depressed for other reasons, and make sure you don't feel any delayed effects of manipulative talk you were exposed to years ago - such lines may linger in our subconsciousness for years and still have its effects. Long hair DOES look GREAT on you!
If it is really your hair that annoys you, why don't you cut off some, say, 3-4 inches. That would clean up any "unclean-looking" ends. In addition, you could try some anti-frizz gel (a clear oily fluid containing dimethicone plus cyclomethicone, and not much else), as that tames the frizz and makes your hair a LOT more manageable.
Hope that helps - ultimately, I can't decide for you. Check out the lyrics of teh Crosby, Still, Nash, & Young song "Almost cut my hair". If something applies to you, you will know it. You owe it to yourself to be good to yourself. Do what makes you happy, and stay away from what makes you unhappy.
Best wishes, and good luck for your further decisions.
Hans-Uwe
P.S.: Here's the lyrics:
Almost cut my hair, it happened just the other day.
It's getting' kinda long, I coulda said it wasn't in my way.
But I didn't and I wonder why, I feel like letting my freak flag fly,
Cause I feel like I owe it to someone.
Must be because I had the flu' for Christmas and I'm not feeling up to par.
It increases my paranoia, like looking at my mirror and seeing a police car.
But I'm not giving in an inch to fear cause I missed myself this year.
I feel like I owe it to someone.
When I finally get myself together, I'm going to get down in that sunny southern weather.
And I find a place inside to laugh, separate the wheat from the chaff.
I feel like I owe it to someone.
