I was just wondering how you usually keep your hair when your out in public, for example when you go shopping? Do you wear it loose, in a ponytail, bun or braid?
As for myself i've started to keep it secured in a ponytail everytime i'm in school or when i'm out in the city.
The only time my hair isn't loose is if I feel the need to tie it back when doing cardio or I'm in the gym. Even then, I despise tying it back and will refrain from doing so 95% of the time. Plus, my ponytail's too thin, really.

At work, I usually keep it in a ponytail. Outside of work, it depends on whatever mood I'm in. I prefer wearing it down and do most of the time. But if I'm going to do be doing something where it might get in the way, I just put it into a ponytail.
Loose unless working outside in the heat and humidity. Then in a tail; have to use a couple of clips near the back to keep in the strays right now.
I wear it however I feel at the time. . .sometimes down, sometimes in a crazy topknot, sometimes in a tam, or tied back in a ponytail.
With the thickness of my dreads I have to wait a bit longer before I can do a nice braid.

"Usually" like this or slinging the Ponytail over my shoulder.
you work in an antique store Justin??
No. I was just out yesterday looking through some shops to see what there was out there. Since the age of 12 one of my hobbies has been early wind-up phonographs. (Both Cylinder and disc.)
I haven't actually collected any, but the original phonograph is easily my favorite invention. Why? Because if you had handed the plans to any skilled, ancient artisan, they could have easily fabricated one 3000 years ago. And yet, nobody during all that time figured out this technology. Was Edison so smart, or were we all so stupid?
Depends on what the weather's like. If its hot or raining I keep it in a ponytail. Then, its down to how I feel at the time, most the time I have it loose though.

I used to keep it down, until early July when my hair got damaged, then I started wearing it in a ponytail pretty frequently and it caught on. Lately I've been doing a single braid though, and I've almost mastered the fishtail braid well enough to wear it out in public.
When my hair's longer I hope to wear it down all the time, but I don't think my hair is heavy enough at this point to get off doing just that.
I'm only in my 14th month in my longhair journey so..I wear it loose..it's not like I have a choice but...when it gets long enough...i'd still probably have it hang loose most of the times
Lately in my lazy one stick bun, sometimes ponytail or down
Since we have a sort of similar hair type, I thought I'd take the opportunity to ask here...
Does your hair stay very managable when it's down? Mine used to be very hard to control, but it's gotten better and better after gaining weight from the length. Is it way harder to keep it down at that length than it is to simply keep it tied back?
It is long enough that it is pretty manageable...assuming not too much breeze...it has been long for long enough that maneuvering it appropriately is mostly reflexive. However, there is enough damage (sun and mechanical) that it tends to tangle when down worse than when ponytailed...also it reaches out and grabs things more (duh!).
Basically I keep it bunned or ponytailed when I am out and about and moving around, I may let it down when I am at a destination where I don't mind people noticing the length. If it is crowded, I'm likely to bun it back up.[1]
[1] As I did last night at the sushi bar, and got an obvious audience from the woman seated next to me...she was all O.O, and claimed to be bun-disabled.
Ahhh, that's an answer I am happy to hear then! I was afraid that I'd have to keep it tied back all the time and that it'd never have a justified chance to get out and breathe. I'll be happy if I can let it down just a little bit!
I'm sure the bunning and debunning of your hair are sights to behold. Already I can believe that time slows down a little while it's happening!
Thanks for the reply, it brought a little inner peace.
Oh, you can always let it down, but you pay the price...in the time to detangle, in the damage and shedding from the manipulation.
Heh. Given that I do a quick release bun with my stick (pull stick, hair falls straight down), and it takes me about 15 seconds to put it up, you have to watch pretty closely.
I was trying to get pictures a little bit ago...one mode was too slow (camera takes images as fast as it can...it was around dusk, so each exposure took too long to catch the action), the other, using video mode to capture individual images was fast enough, but was hard to start accurately, since the camera takes an unpredictable time to focus. I'll have to try again tomorrow.
I did get a passable (if overexposed depending on your monitor) length picture, and the link is a detail of my lazy bun.

That's my biggest worry, I was hoping that that only happened in certain conditions and that I'd be safe enough on a mild day. At least you've reassured me that it'll have a little time to droop down and get a little air.
I'm sure everybody who sees it in progress or who knows what to expect will watch closely! It's not every day that you see a person with hair long enough to make one, much less a guy!
I hope you're able to do that, I'm anxious to see now!
Aaaand, I think you're the owner to the hair that I most envy (As if you couldn't tell already..) It looks spectacular in the length picture. I'm proud to say that my texture, type, and thickness are all similar, and I desperately hope that someday I'll be able to have that length too. You're one of my biggest inspirations for hair growth now!
I saw a thread you made on the LHC about the lazy bun, I'm looking forward to the day that I can do something like that too. It looks simple and casual, and doesn't even require that twisting that always gets me. For now I've got to stick with braids or the boring ponytail, and I definitely can't do a braid in the 15 seconds it takes you to do the lazybun with all that mass of hair.
Some kind of irony that this super easy style requires very long hair.
We'll see, I might just put it in full video mode and post that somewhere.
Good luck, and thank you!
Braids are a pain, and I lack the skills to french braid, which I really like. But yeah, the lazy bun is fast and easy.
I'd like that a lot! And I think I speak for more than just myself in saying so.
I've been trying to french braid my own hair lately, to no avail. I hope that if I practice enough I'll have it down to a routine. Right now I get one section done, and then it all falls apart and becomes a giant tangle. Maybe I'll have better luck when my hair gets longer and I don't have ends of it sticking out of the sections while I'm only at the start of the braid. I second the french braid as a nice style, the french braid and the herringbone are my favourite styles as far as styles on men go. That's not to say I don't like the whole plethora of other possible choices!
To be honest, I thought that 15 seconds was an exaggeration, considering it takes me around 5 minutes to get mine into a normal bun! And that's if I'm coordinated enough to do it successfully on the first try!
..but you.. ..have managed to go from completely down and untouched..to up and secured..in 18 seconds!
The bun goes down wonderfully too, almost looks unaltered from the bun. I guess that's the good thing about not having to twist - it doesn't get clotted together! And it makes it look so easy and casual too.
I'm impressed. Very, very impressed! And thank you for taking the time to make and upload the video too, now it's easier to see just how exactly that lazy bun is made.
And that was the slowest of the 4 takes, but it had the best "bun drop". If my hair is detangled and combed out, and I am out of the breeze, I do drop under 15 seconds. However, it isn't unusual to redo it a couple times if it pulls wrong.
Well, I've wanted to put the up and down for a while, just haven't gotten around to getting the inages/video until yesterday.
My hair is not long enough for a ponytail yet. I keep it down though, as opposed to tucking it behind my ears. (although today we were picniking at beach, and I had to tuck!..lol)

Ditto Simon Ditto !!!!!
I like multiple hair ties. They protect my hair well and are easier than braiding.
Absalom
3 or 4 hair ties. I have to put it under a surgical cap for work. I wear it loose if i go out
I have waist length hair and sometimes I wear it down, sometimes
in a pony tail, sometimes pinned up, sometimes in pig tails like
Willie Nelson wears his, sometimes i'm jsut in the mood to
wear it differently.
