First off, I'd just like to say this is my first post here in a long, long while. I think I used to go by the name HunterMage...
Anyway, I've been growing my hair since last July-ish, so I guess it's an OK length. When full length (really wet), it comes down to about between my sholderblades. I'm shooting for lower to mid back.
The past few months though, it's been curling, to a point where I'd call it out of control. It started just on the ends, curling up and sitting on my shoulders in mini curls rather than growing out. It got worse and worse as time went on, and now my whole ponytail curls into a...much shorter ponytail.
Now, I don't have "curly" hair. It's more "wavy". But now, almost the entire bottom half of all of it is massively curled. I think it looks horrible, and would love to get rid of it.
So, what I'm asking is a twofold question: 1.) Is it normal? Or, does it happen to anyone else? And 2.) Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?
Thanks,
Askren
1) As for normal, I don't know. As for me, it has before and is happening to me. The longer my hair gets the more the ends curl. Now that I am regaining some length, my hair is really starting to go back into ringlets toward the ends. The upper portion of my hair does not curl up, but the lower does the longer it gets. My avatar at the top somewhat illustrates this phenomenon.
2) I don't want to get rid of it, because I really like the way it curls up. I actually capitalize on it and accentuate the curls by means of some gel or leave-in conditioner which helps to keep them more well defined. Sometimes, I even take sections while about half wet and twist them so they will curl better! I am luckily a fan of curls, so it suits me fine that my hair has this characteristic. Although, even when I hopefully get mid-back hair actual length, the effective dry length will probably only be slightly below the shoulders.
But, to get rid of it, you would have to (by ascending degree of damage) blow dry your hair straight, use a straightening iron, or use some permanent chemical straightener. None of which are very good for overall hair health in the long run.
The choice is certainly yours, but oftentimes with hair as well as life, "Accept what you cannot change, change what you can, and have the wisdom to know the difference." ;-)
I have the same problem, along with attendant tangling. (See post "ARRRRGGGHH" below.) :)
In my case, if it weren't for the tangling, I wouldn't mind it. I'd prefer it to just wave slightly or grow straight, abut part of the cool thing about growing my hair longer is just seeing what it does.
You might try a chi flat iron on just the ends of your hair - only when it's dry! - and see if that helps tame the curls. :)
