p/s dude i want to start the mini-dreads when i reach 5-6 inches. do mini dreads look crappy????? and all pokey and stuff?

They'll be a bit stiff as they get harder, but they'll be nice and matured by the time they get long, so it's kind of a tradeoff. After they grow out for a bit, the roots will be a bit looser (cause they don't have enough length to knot yet), so they'll flop over eventually. All matured dreads have the loose roots, it tangles up after about an inch or two.Look up posts/photos by Yeho on Knottylocks, he's a good example of short dreads that look nice.

Hmm, I joined quite a while ago, so it may be a new problem. . .I'll pm the admins and ask them to check it out for you.
The people on dreadheadhq have a greater likelyhood of mold/mildew because wax holds in moisture so well. It also takes a lot longer for them to truly "lock" up, because the wax holds the hairs down like glue, and doesn't allow them to freely move. Movement=knots, wax doesn't allow movement. I used wax when I back-combed my first set in, but haven't used any wax since I've gone natural. If you want something to tame the frizzies (which there will ALWAYS be), a spot of Aloe Vera gel is good for that. But yeah. . .stay away from the wax ;)
Not a problem! Always glad to see new dreadheads! That "Ball" Guy

how fast do your dreads grow compared to when you had long hair? and how fast per year?
im considering maybe getitng dreads if i get tired of long hair :p if thats possible...would it be possible to dread them from a consideerable length and if so how much length would be lost?
thanks ball guy!!!

Well, the hair grows the same rate, but it tangles and coils and knots along the way, so the locks gain length slower. It's hard to guage about how long per year. . .I guess if normal is 6 inches a year, dreads are about 4 inches *shrugs*
It'd probably end up taking about a third of the length away, but on the plus side, with all that mass, they'd mature faster than shorter hair.
Not a problem! Good to see more people getting interested in dreadlocks.
