Hello again. Seems like I stirred up the "hive" with my earlier post. First, thanks Christian for saying "nice pic" right up front. I didn't take offense that you mentioned straightening it. I've actually never considered it. I dig it as it is and have heard (as mentioned) that straightening can damage it though I'm no expert.
And Ken, thanks brother for the hearty WELCOME and saying my hair looks AWESOME! I appreciate that. Also, I have never thought about it this way, but what was said about the internal process involved in growing out wavy hair (in particular), and how that reveals the character of the individual is pretty cool. I read another post a while back along those same lines, and I agree that it takes character, commitment and discipline to grow our hair long; be it straight, wavy or inbetween.
I'll admit that I've envied those with long straight hair. It seems easier to handle. I like the look, and the awkward stage CANT be as bad mine was! I don't know if the ratio of wavy to straight is 1 to 10 but I now feel a bit more unique knowing that guys with hair like mine are somewhat few and far between and comprise their own little niche among the longhaired community. Man, I dig this site. Peace - Bruce

welcome bruce! ive noticed the many threads about curly haired guys too. let me just clear some stuff up, some people think that their hair wont look right because its curly, or that itll just keep curling and never go down. i thought the same when i grew it out, and yea it was a pain for a while. but thats because i was treating my hair the way straight haired people do. curly hair is different, we cant comb our hair while its dry, that will make it puff and frizz, we NEED to condition more and we can not shampoo as much.
curly haired guys, if you wanna grow your hair out do it, it will be great. dont straighten your hair, enough people have straight hair. stay natural to yourself and it is possible for curly hair to look good. as many still know i greatly regret cutting my hair but hey when i grow it out this time it will be a lot healthier because i already know what to do and what not do do. so just a few main pointers for other curly haired guys:
-do not blow dry or use heat on your hair, this in the long term will make it frizz and puff
-wash once or twice a week with shampoo MAX. wash every other day with water only, and conditioner if it works for you. i myself would use conditioner every day. make sure you use a conditioner that it is made for moisturizing/hydrating
-i find that instead of using a normal shampoo, id only ever shampoo with a shampoo/conditioner, followed by a normal conditioner. pure shampoo was too harsh and would strip the oils from my hair making it brittle and frizzy.
-DO NOT BRUSH OR COMB YOUR HAIR WHEN IT IS TOTALLY DRY. for straight haired people this is fine, but for us all this does is let air get between the layers of curls making it very puffy looking
-detangle your hair in the shower while the conditioner is in using a wide toothed comb or your fingers.
-if you want to make it less curly slick it back when when and tie it in a pony tail, when you let it out it will be straighter.
attached are some pictures of me both naturally curly dry and wet. and some others of the time i straightened it (i dont recommend straightening it, very hard with curly hair that is very thick)
those pictures are anywhere from 1 year and 15-18 months. i cut my hair at 23 months and it was the worst decision ive ever made.
Hey, Bruce.
Thanks for the info on curly hair. I, too, requires nearly daily conditioning and, hav efound out recently through trial and error, that a small amount of 3-minute intesive conditioners (which are more viscous than regular conditioners) almost works like a gel in keeping out frizz and offering control, though without and crispiness.
It is great to see some nice pics of long, curly hair. It makes me feel excited for what my hair might look like by Christmas 2007.
I am really happy for this message board.
Thanks everyone!

Hey helgast - Thanks for the words of wisdom. When did you cut your hair? The pics look great. I cut mine off(shaved it)early last summer (14mo's ago). It was about 3 years in length. I learned some stuff back then and I'm doing a few things differently this time around. I agree with your pointers and learned most of them the hard way. I don't mess with my hair nearly as much anymore either, i.e. brushing. It defineately makes it freak out. They need another category for us in addition to length... width, or better yet...circumference! Sometimes I don't even brush it. It is more curly then and shorter but doesn't frizz at all. I've used conditioner once or twice on days I didn't wash my hair but wasn't sure you could/should use it everyday. I'm going to try that now. I find my hair looks and handles best a couple days after it's washed. Soon after that it is too oily and looses its' body. I always figured washing it everyday was too harsh because, as you said, it left it dry. I've tried combo shampoo/conditioner alone but didn't think it conditioned enough by itself. Maybe I'll try it again and use conditioner too afterwards.
I think some of the frustration I've had in the past growing my (curly) hair has been because I DID treat it like straight hair. Thanks for pointing that out for me and the rest of us curly/wavy headed guys. Bruce
you welcome and sorry again i meantioned straighten your hair, and it is your hair and your choice, and good luck!!!
Your hair looks great and fits you ever so well. A very distinctive look..........no question about it.
Thanks for sharing the photo with all of us. Much appreciated.
BRUCE MY HAIR IS JUST LIKE YOURS AND I AM 55 YO AND ALSO A LITTLE "PLATIMUN BLONDE". MINE IS BELOW MY WAIST AND THE LONGEER IT GETS THE STRAIGHTER IT GETS. I ALSO WASH MINE ONLY 2 TIMES A WEEK. I USE CONDITIONER COMB AND PUT IN 4 PONY TAIL HOLDERS. NO BLOW DRY OR IT WILL LOOK LIKE JANIS JOPLIN ON A BAD HAIR DAY. KEEP IT GROWIN IT LOOKS GOOD
Hey Big H. - I'm 50. Don't think mine will be below my waist in 5 years but one can only hope! But let's see, that would be 60 months at 1/2 per month which equals 30 inches! It could happen!I'm at 14 months from a shaved head. I NEVER blow dry it; never have. Do you have a pic? Thanks for your comments. Bruce'ster.
