i wanna grow out my beard to compliment my hair (its not that long - just about 5 inches and growing)
the problem is...i dont think my beard is thick enough to look as good as Bragi's for example...
In my past attempts at trying to grow my beard, it grows very VERY slow....and besides that, i dont have a complete beard----mine is missing MUCH thickness part that connects the moustache to the goatee...only a few stray baby hairs there...
On top of that, when i do grow it the hairs become very curly and unruly.....so i just end up shaving everything but the moustache and goatee....the goatee becomes very curly but its okay...but the moustache, after awhile, doesn't grow any more. It just stops growing completely after around 2-3 months.
I think maybe this lack of thickness and growth could be attributed to my age....im 18 but im not sure if my beard hair should have matured by now...
I would appreciate if anybody can help me with this or give me any advice on what i should do to grow a good beard(maybe just let it grow with no trims for a certain amount of time; similar to growing out head hair)
Thanks,
Gio
I've been wondering about the same thing too.
Everyone's different. I have some of the same problems, i am also thicker on one side. Trust me, wait till your 20s and you will begin to get it better. You may think it has matured but it probably hasn't.
I couldn't grow one properly at your age, but it's passable now, although there is still gaps, you may have to wait ten years!!
same problem here...my facial hair is very thin, grows very slowly, thicker on one side than on the other...you name it!!and I'm 23!!!I might have to wait till my late 20's-early 30's to grow a proper one!!
Wow, thanks!
Hi Gio,
When I was 18 I could not have grown such a beard as I have now either. It was about when I was 22 or 23 that it really thickened up and grew fuller. This is really the case with most guys. You sometimes have rare exceptions of 16 year olds that can grow a complete beard.
I think that beard hair does grow slower than scalp hair. I would just let all of it grow for a while, a month or two, and see what you end up with. You actually might find that you really like the look of what you can grow right now. You may decide that you can take it and shape it a little for a very unique look.
Here also is link to another board with plenty of advice on beards.

Hi Geo. I second what Bragi said...just let it grow and see what you have to work with and see if you like it. I've been able to grow a full beard since I was 16/17 and have actually kept a beard since I was 18. I have somewhat of baldspots (really blond hairs) below my lower lip. You can kind of see one bald spot in this pic:
There's equally thin growth on the other side with a stripe of blondish brown hair down the center connecting to my chin hair. Because it's equal on both sides I normally just shave those which gives a more clean look. I also have to shave my neck because of the many hairs that grow down there. Sometimes you can get creative with beard growth and work with any troubled spots. Have fun with it :-)
Here's something interesting.
My uncle can grow a very full beard, even has a very full beard right now!
But my own father is only able to grow a thick beard around his chin - his sides have almost no concentration of hair. As soon as it's grown out for a few days, it's very easy to tell that there's a lot missing from the sides.
Right now, I'm on the same path as my dad, and I very much hope that's not the case - he can't even grow sideburns, something I thought looked good with long hair in a ponytail. It's kind of upsetting to me, but I suppose I have a few more years to wait to see how it progresses.

Yea, im gonna try to grow it all out for awhile to see what i actually have...and who knows? Maybe i'll like it...
I forgot to mention that my moustache grows about half as fast as my beard, but i'll try anyway....yea, like Oren put it, the moustache takes the longest...
Yea, thanks again for the Beard Board Link...i had been a lurker in that board before, but forgot it existed...thanks for reminding me of it.

Try this link too. It should work. If not, search for Jeff's Beard Board. You may have to register to post though

Hey, Gio.
It might not be thick growth, yet, but as it thickens it will come into its own shape. I can't really grow beard on my neck because I have a bald spot under my chin. The part connecting my moustache to goatee was very thin until about age 28 (and now I shave it off anyway, to give more definition to my moustache and soul patch.
If you act with confidence and make what is on your face look like it was intended, then whatever it is will become you and others will come to expect it of you.
Best advice: Pick a style and stick with it (or grow towards it) for at least a month. Then it will look 'normal' to everyone. Make changes gradually...or make them large and all at once -- but make it on purpose.
