I made the journey to New Hampshire to have Bruce Gallagher give me a trim. My last trim was in January and I felt it was time. He cut 3/4 inch from the back and a smaller amount for my bangs which had never been cut.
Of course, I hate to lose any length but I'm pleased with the results. I love the blunt cut effect. My hair feels silkier and I can pass a brush right through it.
I know trims are a controversial subject but IMO every 9-12 months a small trim aids in achieving one's longterm growth goals.
It looks great. Now if my hair would ever look half as good.. Sorry can't help but feel a little envious. :D
Hmmm. Good point, but what if one is at terminal length, and not really growing l*o*n*g*e*r? I don't have a lot of split ends- but hairdressers still wanna cut! Nice to be coddled (hey, shampoo, condition, and cut by a good-looking gal is *not* to be sneered at!), but I hate having hard-won length chopped!
Decisions, decisions!

Hehe, you know it!
Yeah...your hair is fantastic, man! Whatever you're doing it's definitely working for you. I was checking out your history pictures earlier today...congrats on your progress!
You've got righteous hair Jason. Inspirational.
Just to clarify (I'm right at 10 months also) do you mean December 06 (this coming December) or December 07 (what I would consider next December). I was thinking the same thing about Dec 06, but am now probably going to wait.
Looks great Jason!
I too get the blunt cut effect when I go in for a trim - and like you my hair feels great afterwards.
Keep it growing - it can only look even more awesome!

Hair's looking excellent as always, Jason. At first, I didn't even really notice the effect of the trim - I was expecting the traditional straight-across/linear sort of cut that just shrieks of scissors. But your decision to keep the essential "V" shape - very nice, very nice indeed. I've never had a trim, so I admit to a degree of naivete about them, but I'd assumed that all trims left you with a straight-across cut.
I've got to ask: is the difference after a trim really that incredible? I've got some frizzy hairs in the back of my head that might be damaged, and I'm wondering what to do about them. They're not a huge issue, and I'm not looking into trims at the moment, but in the future, I'm sure I'll have to do something about them (conditioner etc. hasn't fixed the frizz).
Oh, and the last pic is really cool with the green filter effect. Nature, but surbubia, and then the long hair and beardless face - interesting set of contrasts. Speaking of which, do you think you'd ever try out the facial hair again? I think both looks suit you well; I just feel like pestering you. :P
Keep up the excellence!
Oh, and thanks for your comment on my last thread, btw. I posted a comprehensive "thanks" too late, methinks.
Peace
Thanks, man. I actually didn't give Bruce much direction other than to cut the minimum necessary to even everything up properly. My hair was particularly wavy yesterday so I think the straight across look might have obfuscated some. I think he used his expertise to shape it somewhat.
At least for me, there is a very noticable difference. My ends were pretty beat up and kept getting caught up with each other. This not only led to more tangles but reduced the silkiness of the hair. How old are your ends? If you can find someone you trust to do a very small trim, it might make your growing out process more enjoyable and contribute to the overall health of your hair.
Thanks. I got new photo editing software and kept playing around with various effects before settling on that one. Oh, I'm definitely thinking about facial hair again. It seems with the first delightful chill of autumn this process begins naturally. As things stand now, I'm probably going to start regrowing my beard November 1.
My ends are, I believe, nearly two years old (lol, they sound like they're my kids :P), or perhaps two years or even slightly more. The problem is that I'm not totally sure when I last got a haircut, because I believe I intially "started" this journey by just not wanting to let my aunt cut my hair anymore. I'm more inclined to think they're under two years, though. Anyway...do you think this might be too soon for a trim? My length is still way too short for me, and because my hair is so dependent on length and weight to fall, even a minor trim might set me back quite a bit. I guess the best thing is to wait it out.
It's interesting that you noticed that; my little beard hairs spring up far quicker than they did just last month. A defense mechanism against cold, I suppose? And if so, it makes women's lack of such hair even odder.
absolutely amazing hair u have there, good luck in ur continuation of growing it...really is looking great

I had no idea Bruce did hair. Looks great. Nice false-color shot.
Fantastic !
You are definitely moving up my "Guys-I-Am-Jealous-Of" List ! HA!
Lookin' Good Jason, As always, Thanks for Sharing
Walter White Tail
Thanks Walter. I'm glad I'm moving up on that list anyway! :)
Bruce Gallagher is an absolute genius! You could not have had anyone as superb as is he to have given you that trim. It is just so perfect in every aspect. Absolutely magnificent+++++++++++++!!!!!!!!!!!
As far as the controversy about trims: After the 2nd year of non-stop growth, a trim every now and then can be a very good thing.
Thanks for posting the photos. Sure wish Bruce was located nearer myself. Are you ever LUCKY! Your hair has NEVER looked better!
BRAVO!
Thanks Justin. It is great that Bruce isn't too far away. It's well worth the trip to have someone cut who you can trust to not only cut what you want but do a great job.
Jason, your hair looks fantastic. It just gets better with each update, and Bruce Gallagher is one great hair stylist. Keep growing it.
Absalom
Thanks Absalom. I'm curious, do you ever do tiny trims on your hair?
Hi Jason,
as always, congratulations to having such great hair - and the trim turned out perfect indeed!
Looking forward to your 2008 updates...
Hans-Uwe
Thanks and I'm looking forward to those 2008 updates too!
I sure did pick the right time to check in! Your hair looks great!
I must say, through all your times of trying to grow your hair, this is the longest I've ever seen it! It's about time!!! Congrats!
Thanks Sherri. Yeah, it's been a long road but maybe that makes reaching some goals all the more sweet.
Thanks Laurence. January 2004 was my last short cut. Time really does fly. That's one of the things I like about growing long hair. One's hair keeps unfailing track of each passing month.
You have great hair Jason, the colour and body is great and the all over same length is spot on.
Bravissimo!
As far as the timing of trims, I agree that they're not a good idea during the awkward stage especially for the front.
Very beatiful hair and I envy your lenght. Fantastic color shades!
