Yo, just wanted to throw a quick shout out my fellow middle-aged and older men who've grown and are growing their hair long. You're an inspiration to any man who's been lead to believe that long hair is only for the youth (especially rebellious teens).
I turned 35 last month. I started growing my hair in 1990, the day after I graduated High School, and I remain very proud of mane.
Keep it long my brothers!
Well said! That's really encouraging for folks like me who are that bit older still - well 20 years actually. It took me a while to get past just those thoughts but I am well on the way now.

While I wanted to grow my hair long since high school, I have only had a couple of 6 month or so tries at it because I never believed I could get past the afro stage of my curly, sometimes rather unruly, hair.
Now, at 30, I am better informed and better supported (by and thanks to you fine people!) in this quest. I hope that by the time I am retired, I have nice, curly, white "man-locks".
I just turned 63 last month. I started growing from a #2 buzz cut when I was 52 in April 1996. We do what we must because of who we are.
thats a new one... sideways yoga. So into it you can defy gravity...
60 here;
...and lots of guys my age and older are sporting their gray/white and thinning locks in this part of the world. Looks fine and is very well accepted.
At just 55 and having decided to regrow about two years ago it is a good feeling - mid back now my goal. It also proves that you CAN hold down senior jobs in the professional environment.
42 here, and been growing now for over 3 years

Having just recently gone through puberty and finally turned "legal-age" myself, I have no clue what it must feel like to be an "old fart" of say, maybe somewhere as OLD as in one's 50s or so... (cough, cough)
Ahemmmm...
Anyway, as I was saying: I'm a mere "teen": I just look like hell for my age, that's all... Maybe because my exact age is 53-teen?

PS - True, last year I told everyone I just turned 23. OK, I admit it: I lied. But, I said that so I could be let into a club without the bouncer asking to see my driver's license, --- and even more shocked that he never asked me to flash it, anyway! VERY depressing.
And as far as having long hair goes, it's now down to my ankles (if I bend my ankles up towards my ears, that is).
It's tough being a middle-aged teen... and even tougher when people accuse me of being in "denial". Look, I know where that river is! Thanks for the nice comment, though, Nyghtfall!!
Hi Ken,
I know my puberty years are coming to an end because I find it no longer offensive when (other?) adults call me "young man" ;-)
If anyone carded me, I'd probably go "Wow, thanks for the compliment!"
Wishing you eternal youth,
Hans-Uwe
P.S. Our Jewish friends here have a tradition that life starts over at 70, and they celebrate a second Bar Mitzvah at age 83 - so, we aren't even getting close to being a child yet! lol
I once worked at a nursing home where the oldest residents there was 98. He called EVERYbody there, "young man" or, "young woman", --- and everybody I knew responded the same way: they'd blush, loving every munute of it!!!
Thanks, Hans!

Great thread! I'm 50, started growing it again 14 mo ago from (no guard) buzz cut. Had it long right after (dropping out of) high school. Again from 97 to 00' and then again from 02 to 05. My pattern seems to be 3 years length and then a haircut. This time around it's for keeps...going for terminal length...just don't feel "myself" without long hair and I am ANXIOUS to see what 4 or 5 (or more) years will be like. Peace Brothers young and old(er). Bruce'ster
Started with long hair when 63 -- now at 65 -- it looks ok but specific grooming problems (raggedy sideburns, breaks at short lengths) have me lookng for answers.
Do not want to end up looking like Howard Hughes -
Would like to get a gentle wave in toward ends without a perm--any ideas. Want to stay away frm "hair professionals" who all seem to depend on scissors as their answer to everything...and want to (locally) have short spikes stay as the rage/fad.
