For me, it was when I was in seventh grade (1987). I remember noticing an eighth grader who had longer hair, and thinking that is some cool hair! In retrospect, it probably wasn't that long, maybe a bit longer than chin length.
It wasn't till ninth grade that I finally had the courage to grow my own mullet (which, sadly, was in style back then). It met with much resistance from family and friends, but I didn't care. It lasted throughout most of high school. I cut that off, and had shaggy hair throughout college, but didn't really try to grow it long till my first job out of college (even though I really wanted long hair all along). Even since then, I cut it twice after perceived pressure from my career (MISTAKE!).
Now into my 30's, it's getting thin, and I highly doubt that the terminal length will even reach mid-back. I bet it would have 10+ years ago though, and now I wish I had just let it grow during college and not stopped, when I had time and youth on my side. Oh well.
Anyway, back to the original point, I'm just curious if others desired long hair at a fairly young age, even if you didn't go through with right away, or if it was a more recent development.
Sometime in grade school for myself. Probably around 4th grade. Old photos of ancestors as well as my own Dad when young was all I needed. I knew right away that I liked that much better than the kids I was going to school with. So, I ended-up the kid with the longest hair. (Long meaning what would be refered to as "Awkward Stage" by todays standards.) I KNOW I used to demonstrate to the classmates that I could put my bangs in my mouth. Ha ha ha............and they would be amazed! And NO ridicule back then. And, I was the ONLY kid to have a center part. A few had side parts, and most had buzzes.
I had actually liked it for a while now... I'm a high school junior of 16 years of age. I tried growing it last year but realized I had done some unforgivable things to my hair so on March 6, 2006, I shaved it all off one morning for a mohawk which I shaved off that same night. XD
Since then it has been growing, 7 months now and having only had one haircut (which will be my last until I reach desired length, I hope) my hair is maybe 3 inches long in the front.
Also, after realizing and getting an idea of what my type of hair will look like long, I look forward to the end results.
I hope that was a decent first post and I look forward to making more. ^^
When I first realized I love my long hair was when I was a little boy, no more than 5 or 6. I saw my best friends dad had very long hair, I thought he was beautiful. Soooo sexy!!! and manly too! We're actually married now, all because of his hair. We adopted a starving ethiopian child, who also has long hair, like his fathers.
Well, Tazz,
I'd have to say that I didn't start thinking about growing long hair until about grade 10. Before grade 9 (age 14) my hair was rather straight, with a bit of a wave, curling up only and the ends when my hair would 'duck-tail'. Once my hair had gotten its curl (thanks, somehow, to the magic of horomones at puberty), I started to want to grow it out more and more. I never let it grow more than a few months, though, and would cut it after the pressure (usually implicit and probably more self-talk than actual pressure) from others. I must say, though, looking back, that I always felt more myself with the longer hair; more powerful, more balanced and grounded, more alive. I am starting to get that same feeling again after my 5 1/2 months since my last hair cut (see earlier post). It is exciting for me to have big hair, though I hope it will grown down and not just out. We'll have to wait and see.
30 is definitely not too late to start. (Plus I've been at my job a few years and, as a public school teacher with a strong union, I'd be protected from discrimination based on somethings as trivial as my hair length....I teach music, grade Kindergarten through grade 8, incase others wondered.)

I have started growing my hair when I was 31 impressed by an old man with long white hair (I have never had long hair before) and now I am 36 and my hair is waist length :o)
That is encouraging news! Thanks again.
(I plan on being old with curly, white manlocks. When that happens, Hopefully, I'll encourage someone else.)
I came late to the party. Liked long hair long ago but didn't decide to grow it until my 56th birthday in 2004. Should've done it long ago but better late than never as they say. Not sure what the terminal length can be at this later age, but we'll see.
When I was a little girl, about 6, my dad used to watch crappy western films on tv with cowboys and indians. I never liked the cowboys and i always wanted the indians to win (it's their country imo). The indians were usually semi naked (hello boys!), long hair, skins, furs, ran about a lot (very fit) and, to me, real men (not like the horrible cowboys who were mean and selfish).
A yes, a real man, is free, sure of himself and happy to be himself. Long haired blokes rule, probably because, to me, they look good and they are all those things and more.
(Now i need a cold shower... lol)
