It seems like my hair isn't in such good condition, my girlfriend always keep saying that my ends are pretty damaged and that she should take at least 1 inch off.
But i've also been wondering if it's just better to cut the hair short and start from the beginning, as it's maybe too late to save my hair.
I can't really decide what's best for me, is it really necessary to cut of the split ends yet, or can i wait a few months until all my hair is longer, because the sides are alot shorter than the back.
I hope i can still continue to colour my hair dark brown, but only if i don't do it too often, maybe 2 times a year maximum.
I've also stopped using styling products, except for a minumum amount of gel to control the strays when making a ponytail.
Here's a few pics i took today:

what makes you think your hair is damaged?unless you've been doin some major bleaching, blow drying and/or straightening,I think it's all in your head...no one here is immune to split ends,it just happens...it doesnt mean your hair is
damaged...
My sister straightened my hair about a month ago, but i'm not doing it again, well maybe only for special oocasions when my hair is longer but not too often, it's way too damaging for my hair type.
To be honest, I'm not sure your hair is that damaged. But if the ends are feeling dry and sort of strawy then taking an inch off wouldn't hurt as you could grow that inch back in a short period of time and it'll mean your ends will be in better condition. Only go to cut your hair trimmed with a stylist you can trust and only if you REALLY feel its needed.
If I were you I woulnt consider cutting all your hair off at all, its in great condition and looks superb

Hello Simpa =)
Look, I've got to be honest with you... Your hair seems to have a nice texture, and it's fairly shiny, tough I do think that it is thinning a lot for the lenght you have. I mean, thinning at the ends...
I don't think at all that you should cut your hair, and even the trim could wait a couple of months more but..... Now I know that you colour your hair =(
Oh Simpa, that is just soooooo SOOOO damaging to hair. Believe me, after reading as much as I did about long hair and the hair itself, I know that the basic step for growing long healthy, and I mean HEALTHY hair, you first have to accept it.
I look at my hair and I like it now, but if I tried geting the colour and the shape I most like, I would have to colour my hair platinum white and to straighten it every time I washed it. And do you think that I would have the same hair I do if I had done that? Obviously not... I would have much more breakage, less less less shine, and my hair would be thin in the ends...
My advice... and I believe most would agree with me, is that you would simply stop coloring your hair. I don't know what is your natural colour, but isn't natural always the best? It seems to me by your roots that your hair is blond. And what a colour that is! =) Every hair shape and colour is beautyfull... it's YOUR colour, why would you want another?
One of the things I've learned by having long hair is that I have to like myself as I am... for me that's the fulcral point for success in life =) =) =) I do hope you'll keep your hair and that you'll accept it just as it is... I know that if you stop coloring it your hair will thank you with lots of healthy new growth, in the way to longer and longer hair =)
I hope you understood what I meant to say... I'm not saying your hair is in a bad state but it could be so much better (specially for the ends)... I hope you take my post as a friendly constructive advice =) That's why we're here =D
I wish you the best luck, and am looking forward to see you with your goal acomplished =)
See ya!
dying hair really doesn't damage it that much, unless you're going lighter

Amen to that...brother...I commend you!!EVERYONE should be happy with their color and shape of their hair...it's UNIQUE!!it's what makes you YOU!!
João David,
you have a such a great, caring way of speaking (writing to others) that I really look forward to your words. Very constructive advice, both about hair and about one's life. I salute you, Sir!

I don't know if you can ruin hair enough to need to cut it all off. i had my hair in dreads for 8 years - looked a bit crinkled and frizzy when i combed them out (in fact, it looked horrendous and i nearly chopped it all off), but i trimmed the bottom few inches off, and a few weeks of tlc later it looked fine.
Your hair looks in good condition to me tho. Stick with it a bit, maybe try a different shampoo or conditioner, see how that effects your hair?
Wow! After eight years! That just goes to show the possible resilience of hair. Do you have any before (during) and after pics of teh whole de-dreading? I'd love to see them.

Seek opinions from several different Salons. Those that say a similar thing the most are most likely correct.
Even if you were to do this, there is still damage left-over within the "short." I would tend to deal with it as it grows out rather than butcher it all now.
Cut Split Ends (or rather target and isolate ONLY the hairs with Split Ends soon.) To wait only allows them to get worse and give all of the rest of your hair the business ofexcessive tangles and knots galore. Also, be sure the sissors are razor sharp and cut just above the split.
You "can" continue to colour your hair dark brown as long as you know that you are destroying your hair. Every time you colour, you are losing. Best to accept the colour you have. It will always compliment.
Any Long Hair will tell you that they have strays. This is perfectly normal and will always be present because of hair-growth cycles.
Joao has given you the best advice in the kindest possible way. Joao is a true gentleman, and he well knows of what he speaks.
Good luck to you as you tackle this problem. All is not lost (yet), but it appears at present to be in the very "iffy" catagory.
Unless you haven't already, look under links and be sure to read-up about long hair advice from those that know. The treatise written by Bill Choisser is a "must."
Thank you all for the advice you've given me, i'll have to think about this one, if i really do wanna keep my long hair or cut it into a shorter style, after all, the most important thing is that i'm happy with the decision i choose.
Hi
Simon
Your hair damage could be caused from dying your hair as that makes your hair go dry and dull having said that I think cutting your hair short is a dreadstic step to take but it can only be your own choice and no one elses
