How short was you hair when you started to grow it out?
And is it always best to start growing from a buzzcut?
Hi Simon
I grew my hair out from a number 1 buzzcut. While having my head buzzed, I was thinking "i've had enough of this", so i started growing my hair that very day. A for your other question, I have no idea, but im interested to hear other peoples answers.
Neil
3 inches on top, 0.5 on the back and sides. (Jan 2005)
So I basically had pretty much of a bowl hairdo going on, although it looked quite good after about four months.
If anything, the extra length I had on top helped to avoid the mullet look, because the top was always far in advance, in terms of length, than the rest of it.
Now it measures 13 inches on top, and eleven on the back and sides (the two trims I've had have evened things up a bit.)
Ouch sounds very short to your current look !!!!
Luke, You look a lot like Lars Ulrich the drummer of Metallica.
That is before the whole band chopped off thier hair.
Keep it growing, it looks good.
I have always been facinated with long hair like it was in the 60's and 70's. Usually mine has never been very short, if I cut it short I just feel ugly and out of place. Men with long hair have always looked better in my book.
I am not gay or anything like that, but guys just look better with long hair.

Grow, Grow, Grow...
First time short back and sides UK style (long time back) econd time covering ears.
Don't think there is anything to be gaoined by starting from a buzz unless you have been belaching or applying other vile cchemicals such as die etc.
You may have to even it up after three years but no more.

If anything, the less hair you start with, the longer you'll have to wait for long hair.
Simple as.
Had a haircut three days before my retirement ceremony in July '03 (in the pic you can see how short the sides were, it wasn't much longer on top). That was the last time a barber touched my hair.

Oooops. Forgot the pic

My High School graduation pic, 1990:
That's up to you. I started from the crew cut shown in my graduation pic.
You look better now. Long hair suits you.

Hi
Simon How can it be better to grow from a Buzzcut as it would take longer time to grow out !
Besides I havent ever had a Buzzcut I grow my hair out of a short back n sides and ive NEVER had a buzzcut (is know has a Skinhead ) in my life lol
Axel
My hair was short, except for an ugly rat tail, which is not visible in the photo.
wow I would have never would have pictured you with short hair, pretty interesting pic though...
BTW
Thats a big snake and is that a plane?
Heheheh.. Snakes... On a plane!!
It looks like Space Shuttle orbiter. Possibly Explorer or some other mock-up at KSC or somewhere else.
Did you hear they are coming out with a sequel to that movie, its called Bears on a Helicopter Heheheh
It's a nice picture. You look pretty good.
...what a difference!
In terms of aesthetic appearance I do think long hair suits you more, BUT it is undeniable that short hair suited you as well(do you have any pictures of the rats tail).
I must say though that I think you should shave down to just the moustache again as it really suited you IMO.
And your hair being short really highlights how reddish it is!
Here is the rat tail photo.
Shaving is too irritating and painful for me, it leaves my skin raw.
What you are seeing is hair colour. My natural colour in 1987 was a dark blond. It is more reddish now than then.
Absalom
So what did you did back then? were you like Steve Irwin that airs nature shows that has to do with snake?
Tai, you know that Steve Irwin died recently dont you??

He was hit in the chest by a stingray while filming a new series, it was very sudden the cameraman didnt even realise he'd just filmed his death. Very sad, a fantastic man
wow, you look so much better now (but i'm biased)
No, I shouldn't think so.
That's a very nice pic of you, actually. I must sound like a heretic complimenting your and Absalom's short hair pics. Maybe I am not as committed to growing as I think I am.
Personally I think most men w/o Male pattern baldness would look better with longer hair than short. Yet there are MANY short styles that i think look great, a few people that I think suit shorter hair better and there are quite a few lucky people who suit both short and long hair equally.
I'm not a 'heretic' then and neither are you in my opinion, BUT you'll never know if you never grow.
Remember it takes years of dedication to grow/maintain long hair, mere seconds to cut it, if you can withsatnd that time factor + all the social pressures, well then you are far from being a 'heretic'.
Instead? You are a longhair!
Well, thanks. If I'd had a personal hairdresser, I might never have started to grow it out.
That picture shows how my hair looked at its best when short, right after a visit to a salon. Most of the time it just looked messy, cause I've never been able to style my hair.
hmm...I decided to let my hair grow 4 months after I got a "spiked hair" style haircut, namely, longer on the top and shorter on the sides/back.so...to answer your question...I think it was about 2 inches :)
Here is a picture taken in May of last year that represents the haircut I last had in October. (Oh yeah, 1 year!)
I agree with others, the shorter your hair when you decide to let it grow, the longer it will take to get to your goal.
Bruce
Simpa in your case I think it might be best to start from a short cut ONLY because of all the damage you've done to it.
That's not to say that I think it looks terrible now, because I don't, I just think that it could look much better if you grew it out treating it properly from the start.
In any case from the comments you have made in the past you do seem to be unhappy with it yourself which is the most important thing.
NB-you don't have to buzz your head to do this, you can trim your hair about 5-10cm every year for the next 3 years or so.
.
Smiling coz I know whats comin'!
Tada!
Perseverance!
...and may I ask why you chopped it all off the first time? :)
As a favour to my mother (who is a ahirdresser) or intense/bitter familial pressure going back constantly for moths and months before I eventually cut.
It was the worst 10-20 seconds of my life as the tail was hacked off.
Although I suppose in the grand scheme of things thats not so bad eh?
But now I'm back baby!
This is actually my military discharge papers... I took this while I was still in the military (was about 2 months to go)
lol, short. Much like this post, since I refuse to show my horrific pre-longhair photos.
Here is about the best I can find without resorting to a "Tintype" of myself pre-4th grade. LOL :-) Photo was taken after a "major mid-back length haircut!"
