Howdy one and all. Have been enjoying my hair a lot since it has "turned the corner" and become a bit more manageable (at 15 months next week!)Since it is still too short to completely tie back and because it is very thick I have no choice but to wear it down (free fallin' to quote Tom Petty.) I really like the looks of it and have gotten a compliment or two. I'm a teacher and in a new school and we had a parent meeting the other night.
I'm sure a few people were like "is that dude teaching my kid?" but just as many were also saying "rock on, nice to see a mellow fellow working with our students." Here's to letting our freak flags fly! Peace - Bruce'ster P.S. Thought I'd try out a beard this Fall since many of you guys are sportin' them.
Yes with the Beard. It looks good, adds masculininty, AND keeps you warm while saving you time and the hasle of shaving.
The hair is very thick.. how long unti lyou think it will go into a tail willingly?
Mr.Crow
Hey Mr. Crow - Thanks for the positive vibes! The beard IS keeping me warm this Fall especially on my motorcycle. As for the ponytail, I figure another few months until it will all tie back. This is my third time growing it out over the years and the 1.5 yr. mark is usually when it all "comes together." I can get most of it back now up high but because of the thickness it points straight out. I prefer the lower ponytail. It looks better on me and takes 1 less wrap on the scrunchy. Later my friend. Bruce
I think the beard really suits you well. It makes you look very distinguised. The hair looks great, too. It shouldn't be much longer for tail length. Keep it growin and flowin.
Tom Petty rocks! (Welcome to the board, BTW)
Hi Bruce, The hair and beard rock!
The beard really finishes off the look in my opinion, excellent work.
HI Bruce,
Fellow teacher here. I've been long haired since 2000, and I have never gotten any negative feedback from parents (or really anyone else connected with the school), and I teach in the Deep South where "progressive" is often considered a bad word.
I am sure that some of my more conservative colleagues don't know what to make of my hair, and one recently asked me why I grow my hair long. She ventured, when I told her that I had always been forced to keep it short as a child, that I was "in rebellion". That took me back a bit. I told her, no, that it was more about realizing when I was 42, that I was free to choose how to wear my hair, something that I think most women appreciate.
Your hair looks great even if shorter than you want. You are lucky in that regard. I have a colleague at school right now who has been growing his out for a year. His is a bit curlier than mine or yours, and he essentially has a huge afro right now, though just yesterday I noticed that gravity was beginning to take over!
What do you teach? I teach Latin.
Robert
Hey Robert - I teach Science/5th grade. Originally from No. California, I'm now in the south as well...N.C. As you said, I don't think some of my new colleagues know what to make of my hair either. We have a few long hairs in our district but none where I work. It is a small country school and seems very conservative. So far I've made a good impression (I think) and was "recruited" more or less by the principal so the hair just comes with the package. I did however have a parent give me some grief once last time I had long hair. She thought I was setting a poor example for the students and said so in front of several other parents. I laughed it off then, but later "confronted" her and was very assertive about that not being her place and if I had ever mentioned her or any other woman's hair style I could be accused of sexual harassment. That was the end of that! AnyHEW, thanks for the positive feedback. Talk with you again. Bruce
Great story, Bruce.
you did a great job of avoiding the power struggle and chaos taht could ahve arisen from cutting back in front of othes. Then you did a great job of asserting yourself later.
I, too, am a teacher (JK - Gr8, Rotary Music) and am supposed to look 'professional'. I guess that, as a music teacher, people are more forgiving of big fro-ish hair..
Ciao!
Mr. Crow (the other Shawn)
Oh, yeah, the beard's definitely workin' for you. I love mine. I especially love not having to shave every morning.
A VERY distinguished look.........no question.
Looks great! :-)
You must be such a cool teacher! Not like the ones I had at school!
...and from now on you will be quickly heading toward your ponytail, which
you will love. Why? Because then you will have the ability to look
any way you like.
Until you can make a tail, you have to let it just go where it wants,
but once you reach the 'tail stage' YOU will be in control!
Good luck on your 'Long Hair Journey'!
