It feels like i've had enough of my long hair for now, i wanna try something new, as i've had longer har now for about 2 years, but with many trims in between to keep it at the same length. The reason why i wanna start over is because my hair is really dry & damaged, mainly because of colouring, using alot of styling products everyday and of course straightening.
And i really feel that my hair is not healthy, it really isn't, my girlfriend also tells me that, she thinks that the best would be to start over again from a short haircut so that my own blonde haircolour returns.
Now i just have 2 questions to ask you before i'm finished.
1. I'm just wondering if it's better to wait atleast a month before i chop it off, just so that most of my blonde hair on top has grown back if i want to have it short? I don't wanna have a mix betweeen brown and blonde in my hair. And another reason why i don't wanna cut it just yet is because my sister is getting married in november, and i want to have a little longer hair then so that i can style it, i'll most likely keep it in a ponytail at the time.
2. When i'm finally back on my long hair journey again, would cutting split ends every other month, or maybe 3 or 4 be enough if i never use styling products or anything else that could harm my hair.
Sorry for making so much questions, but i just want to be absolutely sure of what i'm doing:)
Simon
Oops, i forgot to write, the pic i included is an example of how short i'm going to cut my hair, because i think most of the damaged parts would be removed that way.
Also, how long do you think it would take from that length to get to the shoulders?
Thanks in advance:)
You've gone through a great deal of trouble to grow your hair the length it already is. If long hair is what you want, and that seems to still be true, then I suggest a maintenance approach getting frequent trims while maintaining a basic length that allows for the hair to be tied neatly as needed. Your damaged hair will eventually be replaced by healthy hair.

I agree with the other guys, Simon. Maybe just a slight trim to deal with the thinnest ends and then let 'er grow, with maybe only slight trims if the ends get out of hand. I''m dealing with a similar situation myself and the guys here have encouraged me to let it grow, (maybe with a slight trim after some more length has been achieved). Good luck, and healthy growth! I've recently done the same thing and went down to about an inch all over and I really enjoy it. I get to start all over and at the same time enjoy some of the new styles that are in today. I realize there are other ways to wear it but once your hair gets either extremely long or short your options are limited. This way starting from scratch lets you enjoy the different styles. Just remember it grows back and it sounds like due to all the coloring and straightening it can only get more healthy. Go for it dude and at the wedding you will surprize everyone with your new look.
Simon, you'll immediately regret chopping it all off. Everytime I tried to grow mine out and then decided to cut it, I hated myself for doing so. Go with the maitenance trims and your hair will be in much better shape before you know it. =)

LOL...your girlfriend knows what she's doin'...she wants you to get accustomed to short hair first before breaking the news that she prefers short hair on you :P
ok,jokes aside, the hair will always grow back so...if you think this is the best thing then go for it...now...your other option is to deal with the hair as it grows out (like the others have said)...but that's up to you..so...the best of luck to you:)
Hi Simon,
in my personal opinion, I'd just do ONE more trim of, say, 5 cm (even after ONE 5-cm trim, the bad ends should be mostly gone) - but I'd always keep it long enough for a decent pony tail. I wouldn't worry too much about two colors - I have seen a handful of guys with long hair who stopped dyeing the new growth, say, 1/2 to 1 year ago - It didn't look bad at all! And, even if the color says "permanent" or "level 3", it does fade after a number of months, so, you should be o.k.
If, however you have pleasant dreams about trying "something new" - I'd wait AT LEAST one month for anything drastic.
As I said, even bi-colored hair is not a problem, and I second (5th) what's been said below...
All the best!

I agree with Hans-Uwe. I wouldn't start from scratch if you want long hair. You will have to go through the awkard stage all over again. I have found that the less you do to long hair the better. Don't blow dry it, color it, use gels, or irons. Just wash it, and condition it. Maybe at the most, get a slight trim and then just let it grow out. If the ends are still a little damaged in 6months, get another slight trim. I only have my hair trimmed twice a year every 6 months. I have waited over a year this time because the lady that trimmed it, quit the business. A friend of mine who used to have long hair for about 10 years told me about the stylist that trimmed his hair. I may go see her soon. My hair is currrently at waist length and this is how I have been carrrying for it since 1992.
Good Luck.
Darrin
Hi Darrin,
it's great to hear about another guy who started growing his hair in 1992 - and it's good to hear that you have reached waist length! I, too, do very small trims every 6-12 months to take care of dry ends. My terminal length is significantly less than waist length :-( but at least, I don't have MPB like several of my fellow students at my high school reunion :-)
Jarkko used to post here from time to time, he has great blond hair at waist length, and he's extremely creative when it comes to hair styles. Too bad, he took his pictures down from his internet site almost a year ago...
All the best!

See this fellow here?
I know not who he is,
This picture, I know not
Where I did find it.
Blonde length has he,
Dark at the roots,
And a little diamond
In his ear!
Prosit!
Hi Simon, I have thought about cutting every few weeks but figure that the frizzies will just grow out, I hope.I think that you have gone a long way to just start over, you could do one last dye to match your original color and just continue the growing. You would be much farther along that way,
just my observation. I am going to try some leave in conditioner to see it that helps my frizzies and tames the split ends. Might be somthing you could try?Chris

Before even you think of cutting it off why not try a booster dose of conditioner to your hairs. Soak it with enough conditioner (some good one) so that it can get back the life back. My only concern is if you loose it you may think of never growing it back ... its a very hard journey as you already know. Think about it.
