Ive had considerably long hair since I was 16/17. At one point it was halfway down my back, then on a whim I decided to get it cut to just above shoulder-length. I liked how it looked for a while, but as it is right now Im really getting annoyed with it.
It currently just looks like a shapeless mass of curls on my head. It needs definition more than anything, as well as to lose some of its size (my hair is very thick and very wavy).
So Im interested to hear some suggestions. I thought Id post here since everywhere else just gets responses like "CUT IT SHORT" and such like. Im willing to cut it shorter, possibly to chin-length, but whatever other suggestions are welcome too. Many people are telling me to get it layered but they never actually explain to me what that means or would look like.
Pictures of styles are more than welcome, they'd be a big help. Here's one of me.
Hi Jamie Thomas and welcome to the board!
I think you're hair looks great! It would be a shame to cut it short as I think it suits your face very nicely. Why does it bother you so much? It looks maybe a litle dry but otherwise it's just fine. Do you use any conditioner for the moment? Your hair is actually pretty similar to mine only longer.
About layering: When layering the barber uses a pair of siccors which only cuts some of the haistrains during each cut and leaves the rest. The problem with this technique is that it is really difficult to get as close as to the scalp and because of this the hair will still be there, only shorter. They may appear as litle spikes between the longer hair strains.
So from my own personal experience that's not something that I really would recomend. It may solve the volume issue temporary but will look even worse ones the hairstains previously cut off grow longer.
I your case and considering how long you have grown it so far I don't see the volume as a problem. Judging by your pic the hair seems heavy enough to stay down and not burst into all direction. Alot of people probably admire you for that volume! I don't know what kind of music you are in to but that hair looks very metal. :) Just think about how you maintain it; condition regulary, don't expose it to any unessesary stress, comb and untangle it and so forth and it should be allright.
This link shows my hair progress so far. Like yours, mine is very thick and very wavy. Hope you enjoy them!

Jamie Thomas,
I know this is not the kind of comment you wated to hear, but I love the way your hair looks. I can only dream of having thicker hair, and yours is so full!
It seems that the ends may be a bit damaged but outside of that I really like it. WHATEVER you do don't just cut it short!
I'm not a fan of layering
a question for you, how much care do you take of your hair? Mayeba route to go is to start taking unbelieveably good care of your hair, so that you can cut off the dry ends and what will be left will be very neat and more manageable? Just a suggestion
Layering is deadly for longterm hair growing. Thickness is something to be appreciated IMO. I sure wish my hair was thicker.
My advice? Get a 1/2 inch trim of the ends uniformally and then just let it keep growing!
You should be proud of your hair's volume. You have around the volume I once had. I hated it as a teen and wanted thinner hair but came to appreciate the volume fully around the time I hit 20. Unfortunately, my hair has thinned over the past year or 2. Looks like I got my original wish.
Enjoy it while you have it.
Hi Jamie,
thanks for posting this great picture of yours - and please forgive us if some viewers start drooling :-)
Let's get serious: Your hair is phantastic - and you look SUPER COOL with it! Hey, you're a great looking young man with great hair - you have reason to enjoy who you are and what you look like! Is that picture current?
If you get bored, or annoyed with your current hair style, why don't you just try new styles - a "regular" ponytail, or a parting line in the middle, or a half-tail, or you could braid it (No, that does NOT look fem on you), or some kind of bun - there are so many possibilities, all without cutting!
I'd say, let your hair represent your creativity - NO need to layer, cut, or otherwise butcher it! And, stay away from those forums where only buzz-cuts count ;-)
So many people who got layers or "thinnings", or similar cuts have later regretted it - by the way, is there anyone in your life who wants you to get shorter hair? These people would sometimes coax us into getting at least some "layering", or "thinning", or a "maintenance trim", or a "styling cut", or what not, correctly speculating that we won't like it after a while, and, in order to fix things, we might give up and cut it all off eventually - and that's what they wanted all along!
This is one of the techniques of "induced attitude change": They try to get something from you first, so that you are unsettled, and that your identity and style is "unfrozen", and then they can get you to do whatever they want. (This is different from legitimate experimenting with style - but that would need to come from within - and it should not be due to "delayed complicance" to manipulative requests sometimes made quite some time ago.)
I second the old Texians, who used to say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". And, if your hair did not really annoy you when it was longer, but only now as it is shorter, the logical remedy is to grow it back, isn't it?
If you still consider other cuts, give yourself at least TWO MONTHS before you act, I'd say, so that you are protected from more damage "on a whim".
Best wishes, and - why don't you simply grow it to midback again since that would look coolest...

whatever you do DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR...I repeat...DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR!!!that's some FANTASTIC lookin' hair...I wish I will have volume like that when my hair get's long enough..:P
Sorry to be boring Jamie, but I think you should keep it as it is - it looks fab, and a few more inches on the bottom will look even more fab. You don't mention your hair care routine but I would suggest perhaps trying a deep conditioning treatment and keeping combing with a wide toothed comb to a minimum to keep the definition in the waves. I would imagine a brush would not be a great idea except if brushing out before washing and conditioning.
Really, you have lovely wavy hair there - most of us would gladly swap for hair like yours!!
find a nice shampoo ANDconditioner and just keep it gorgeous .
!!!!!!!!! DONT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CUT IT!!!!!!!!

ok..that was harsh!!
Hi Jamie,
don't let that question of "lover" get to you! (Incidentally, "lover" seems to post comments from the same IP address block as "Chipster", WITHOUT necessarily being identical with him - Chipster, do you have a strange neighbor?)
Jamie, unquestionably, you do look VERY MUCH masculine to me! Again - keep that "freak flag" SUPER LONG and grow it even longer - if anything, it ADDS to your maleness! Obviously, you do have the "balls" (pun IS intended) to stick to your guns and to be yourself - great!
Hans-Uwe
Message for "Lover": Please be more careful and more respectful the next time!
Jamie, Hans and everyone else, I am very sorry for that uncalled for post. It turns out that my "wonderfull??" daughter asked this question when I was in the shower, she just admitted it to me. I was showing her this site yesterday and she had commented that she thought jamie was not a guy, but it did not go any further than that. It did not occure to me that she would ask. I have deleted all cookies, password protected my desktop and bitched her out. It should not happen anymore, very embarrassing! :(Again, I apologise for that tasteless post. Please don't let it diswade you Jamie, you look great with your hair just the way it is, I would not cut it if I were you.Chris

Hi Chris,
thanks for posting an explanation and apology. You were right explaining to your daughter in clear terms that questioning the gender identity is a way of hurting someone and that she has done damage that way, and securing your computer better in the future, but, depending upon her age, I wouldn't get down on her beyond that.
While I'm not authorized to accept an apology on Jamie's behalf, I nevertheless thank you on my own behalf.
Hans-Uwe
I think it looks great, but if you liked it the way it was at the shoulders then why not got for that again?
