For those of you who don't know already, I'm Muslim and this is the month of Ramadhan (the prescribed month of fasting for Muslims). During this time we're not allowed to eat/drink during the day (but we can eat during the night and early morning hours lol)
Anyway, I thought that fasting would have slown down my hair growth but I don't think it has. My hair comes down to about my nostrils now. I find that I'm eaten a bit more healthy than I usually do. I eat fruit and french toast for breakfast in the morning (either that or pancakes, eggs, and hashbrowns). And I drink about 2 bottles of water in the morning to stay hydrated until it's time to break fast after sunset. And for dinner I'm eating more fish, salad, and rice than anything else lol My hair is really soft and long now (sorry no pics yet lol)
What has been your experience with fasting in your religion/faith and growing your hair?
I hope you'll continue your healthy way to eat and not only for your your hair. Again no pics...pity !

I'm actually so happy that a muslim has put some words here. Me too I am. But on the contrary to you, I don't eat healthy, and I sleep really really late cause of work. I'm working late only this moth and it is a shame that I can't observed ramadhan well. Since the start of this month, I'm keeping my beard also, so with my long hair I'm looking like someone deserted for months on an island, anyway.
For you who is a muslim, don't you think that growing hair beyond soulder is an offence in Islam??? I do keep mine really long???????
Salaam. and Ramadhan Mubarak
I personally don't see a problem with guys growing their hair long. It would be one thing for us to act in a completely overly effiminate way as I'm positive the Qur'an forbids that. But letting our hair grow is natural and as long as we can keep it clean and manageable, there shouldn't be a problem :) And from what I understand, it's not unusual to see guys letting their hair grow to their shoulders or longer (usually it's in a bun if it's longer than their shoulders)

Salaam, JAck (and others).
While not Muslim, I have a number of muslim associates of whom I have posed many questions regarding the nature of Islam. I find it very ironic, JAck, that you feel the need to ask about the Islamic view on long hair growth for men, wondering if having long hair is expressly listed as offensive.
The only reason I find it ironic, though, is because the same person had earlier posted things like:
I've been encountering many many extremely cute girls with short hair, and love havin sex with them.
... and ...
I've been doing lots of ladies. Although many have dump me out with my long hair. Some say that I look like a girl, so my reply to them is that "do you want to have a lesbian affair"
Am I missing something here?
I am not a religious person myself and I think nothing of consenting adults doing whatever they want to each other, but it seems that you are religious, JAck, and I can't help but shake my head at this glaring contradiction.
(If these girls/women of whom you brag, uh, I mean speak, were your wives ("your women"), and if you only had sex with them sometime between sunet and sunrise, for those encounters which took place during Ramadan, then I am sorry...you were completely in the purview of Islamic norms:
2:223 Your women are a tilth for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilth as ye will...
2:187 It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. )
But, if not...
Why would you care about the long hair issue (and not the sex issue)?
Very confusing...

Regarding Long hair in Islam....
"The Prophet had long hair till his shoulders; this is confirmed in a narration reported by Imaam Muslim but this was in accordance with people's customs and traditions and was not done an act of worship. Anyway, if one performs an act done by the Prophet that has a relation with the customs, but he did it with the intention of imitating the Prophet then he will be rewarded for doing so."
and, regarding sexuality in Islam (taken from www.themodernreligion.com)
"The Right to Adequate Sexual Relations
Since the purpose of marriage is to be a mutual source of comfort, peace, and enjoyment for each other, like a garment that protects and covers, the sexual aspect of marriage is an extension of this. The husband is asked to be gentle, considerate and loving with his wife, and to try to satisfy her needs.
The wife must reserve herself exclusively for her husband, and make efforts to be attractive, as well as making herself available to him whenever he is in need of her. This latter obligation also applies to the husband.
In Islam, any sexual relations are reserved EXCLUSIVELY for the confines of marriage. Both husband and wife are also obligated to honor the privacy of the intimate relations between them, and should not speak of them to anyone. ")
Hmmm.....any conflict of interest here?
Hi Shawn, I was thinking the same thing when I read those controdicting posts but considering the diversity of all these silly religions I figured it was the norm of people to choose the "works" they like and discard the "works" they do not like.
Typical religion, they even murder over it, ridiculous fools!
Chris
Actually in Islam we're only allowed to fight we those who fight with us--and when they stop we have to stop. Many of the people that they show on tv are extremists and convince themselves that they're acting in accordance with Islam when they're really not e.g. A man beating his wife because she wont have sex with him is not allowed in Islam but many people think it is due to the culture--not religion.
I do not recall long hair being forbidden in Islam while I was a muslim. I have known some muslim with longish hair anyways. I remember while fasting I do lose some weight but don't overdo it because its bad. Not eating during the day isn't bad for you unless you are doing extreme aerobic exercise in that case you must drink enough water. Dont get too caught up if you break fast by accident though... it is generally accepted you can just continue fasting if you do sip something or eat a snack by accident. I don't know what the extremist thinks however... they seem to want to kill anyone who doesn't follow THEIR version of Islam. I am sure plenty of muslims died when 9/11 happened.
Hmmmmm...well, anyway, fasting won't stop or slow down your hair growth.
On the other hand, if you had poor nutrition over a long period of time, you might
end up losing lots of hair.
Good Luck
Well my nutrition habits weren't so bad before I started although I did eat fast food once or twice a week :P Drinking more water (and some Powerade/Gatorade) has helped me to keep up my energy level and ironically keep my hair a bit shinier (maybe do to the extra oils my body is producing now)
although I did eat fast food once or twice a week."
Hair isn't really that sensitive even when your nutrition is way off.
If you have good hair genes it will grow even with poor nutrition.
But for the healthiest hair, you wouldn't want to be eating junk all the time!
apparently, yes!!there is a guy in my dorm hall that is muslim(he's currently fasting as well btw) and has long hair!!!
