Fellas...
I have been really paranoid with sheding lately...
I've just brushed my hair (I have been wearing a ponytail all day today) and I lost about 65 hairs... and I think that if I kept on brushing I'd loose more =(
I am really gentle with my brush, which is gentle itself... I wonder if this is normal...
I always wonder if my ponytail circumference size is decreasing... I don't want to be loosing too much hair, you just can't imagine how much it breaks my heart to see my sheding...
Is this normal guys?? Is sheding suposed to decrease the longer the hair gets? I hope I've got nothing to worry about, I have been really scared =( I only want my hair to get at least waist lenght, I am really scared i can't make it 'till there =(
What do I do??
Sorry, but I had to ask you for help... I am really frightened, I realy love my hair and want it to grow healthy and QUICK, so I don't want to loose much hair =(
='(
When you posted a series of pictures a week or two ago, I remember thinking how insanely thick your hair is. I don't think hair loss has been an issue for you. My guess is that you brushed out more than a single day's hair loss, that's all. You may have had some of yesterday's shedding mixed in and it came camer out together.
Hmmm... it could be that if you're being overly gentle while brushing, you may not catch all the loose or detached hairs, leaving more to be discovered the next day. With how thick your hair is, it is doubtful that you're actually losing hair at a rate that is worth worrying about. You might just shed a little more some days than others. I know I do.

You are right...you are paranoid...and obsessive about your hair. You have a great head of hair and I cannot find anything in your message worth getting upset over. You have, more or less, shown this behavior before in some of your older messages. I suggest you just find something else to divert your attention and then just relax and enjoy your long hair.
Hi João,
First and foremost, one should not get "paranoid" about the behaviour of one's hair, for to do so will cause needless stress that just might actually make the problem worse. I know that I shed more when I'm badly stressed than when I'm at peace. In other words, "Don't worry about it." What will come will come.
Don't worry about it, for the mere act of worrying stresses you. A view from afar shows that you have positively magnificient hair -- hair, in fact, so impressive that I'm sure that there are more than a few folks a wee bit envious.
The only cause for worry would be if you see signs of an underlying skin condition on your scalp that's causing problems. Fretting for less than that merely plants the seeds for future worry and stress. Relax.
I find that as long as I condition every day, even if I don't shampoo, I don't lose much at all. My brush is one of those blow-drying brushes with widely spaced bristles. I only comb with a wide tooth comb, which also helps (which I'm sure you know)
I agree that you may just be that you're seeing more than one day's shedding. With millions of hairs on your head, 65 doesn't amount to much. From what I saw in your pics, I don't think there's anything to worry about.
There is one suggestion I could make. My wife had surgery, and was told that one of the side-effects of it was that was to expect hair loss. They suggested that she increase protein intake (protein shakes, etc.), and to take Biotin (tablets that dissolve under your tongue). Many people didn't do this and ended up with large bald patches. My wife was very faithful to the suppliments, and saw very little loss which recovered quickly.
I hope this helps, but as I said, I wouldn't worry about this unless it becomes an everyday thing.
Hey Joao,
Because your hair is very thick - and believe me your hair is VERY THICK, you will inevitably shed hair that will not fall from your head, instead staying stuck in with your other hairs. You'll find that your brush is full of these old hairs, remembering that its perfectly normal to lose 80-100 hairs a day, which will come out through the whole day. When brushing just be as careful as possible. My ritual is to finger comb till most the knots/tangles are out, going from the tip of your hair to your root, then brush gently from tip to root in about 3-4 inch stages. It takes a bit of time but it does work for me. As for the circumfrence of your tale, you can NEVER accurately measure that as hair is uneven, so try not to take it too seriously. You've probably got the thickest hair I've seen on this board so relax, and enjoy your hair, dont fret over it.

Hey Joao
I can well hear where you are coming from on that one as it has happened to myself as well, and now I see a yearly pattern to it. I shed yearly beginning about 1/2 way through August to end of October. The peak time of losing the most hairs is around the 2nd-4th week of Sept. before all subsides and becomes less and less. By the end of Oct. ALL is normal again and I cannot see that I have really lost anything after the whole period ends.
I am inclined to think this is a natural thing that Nature does for us just as she does for all warm blooded animals.
If anything like me, ALL of the shed hairs are complete right down to the little ball at the end, and 95% of the hairs are all the very longest ones.
Absalom once told me that he goes through the same cycle yearly as do I and at the same time of year. Sure doesn't look as if he has lost anything!
Hope this helps.
Justin~
I'm paranoid about shedding hair too. I'll wear a beanie for three hours than take it off and there will be like 15 hairs stuck to it. I never brush or comb my hair though. I will occasionally finger comb it. So I'm thinking instead of the hair being trapped in a brush, its trapped in a hat or my fingers.
If you keep worrying like you do, all of your long hair is going to turn gray :)
Seriously, you're not losing any more hair than anybody else does. Just keep taking care of it, and you'll reach your goal. Just stop worrying like an old mother hen.
It's normal, hair is constantly replenishing itself. Your hair is awesome; don't worry about it. We will see you with waist length hair!
Men can lose to 100 hairs per day, it is normal. However, one can decrease this loss. Me I have taken food complements each day for a few years (vitamins, trace elements) and I lose much less hair. My hair regrowth better, is brilliant and resistant.
Unless you are loosing well over a hundred hairs a day OR your hair is
coming out in clumps OR you are developing 'bald spots' you
are completely within the 'normal' range.
Good luck!
Don't worry, I shed hairs all the time, --- every day, in fact. I've never counted them; but my guess is that it could be even close to 100 a day. I dry-brush my hair, because it stimulates my scalp; but my brush is loaded with all those hairs that shed away during the process. This doesn't stop me from brushing, however; nor has it ever been something I've worried much about, --- it's just something that happens (and is especially MORE noticeable now that my hair is as long as it is)!

Well, João David,
I am a short hair by comparison to many of you fine folks and I still see curls on the bathroom floor under my towel all the time. Thick, dark hair is very noticeable. You are probably fine....
you don't by any chance eat radioactive food do you, or have a huge hole in your microwave door, though? (kidding !)

Do you tie your hair tight in a pony tail? I'd suggest you give it about 1 centimetre of slack -- ie. move the hair-tie about 1cm back grom tight and that should relieve the tension on your scalp.
Anyway, I don't think you should worry. I'm 52 years old, have very fine hair, it's at terminal length of about mid-back and have been dropping enough hair to clog up my bathroom drainhole and an accumulate lump on the floor but I'm still not going bald.
However, something which could concern you is that your hair could be at or near terminal length.
I've not cut my hair since 1992 and it's still at mid-back when wet.
