hi folks,
I've heard that caffeine retards hair growth (?!)..is it true or is it BS?
Hi Cerebral,
I doubt it. Caffeine can partially protect mice from hair loss caused by radiation (which is relevant for cancer therapy), but i have found no data on humans.
I'd suspect that caffeine is bad only if you drink so much coffee that it gives you palpitations or if it keeps you from eating properly, eg by causing a stomach ache.
In contrast, smoking does make hair loss and male pattern baldness worse.
Happy growth, and enjoy that cup of coffee or tea!
Hans-Uwe
oh ****, i smoke!! :((
Hi Cerebral,
I'm sure you have managed to go without smokes for a few days or weeks or possibly months in the past. I suggest you read "Allen Carr's easy way to stop smoking" (/$ 9-12, £ 6-7, paperback). This guy managed to go down from 100 to zero cigarettes a day, so he knows what he's talking about. His style may be a bit propagandistic, but he is good at countering the propaganda of the cigarette industry which tries to tell us that we should not even think about kicking that self-destructive habit.
Wishing you a happy and smoke-free long-term growth,
Hans-Uwe
On a related topic, didja guys know this?
Castrated Men never go bald!
True, because scalp hair shafts have androgen receptors. If there are no androgens around, these receptors are not engaged. Modern anti-MPB drugs are directed at blocking the androgen receptors of hair shafts only, so that there are no sexual side effects.

I doubt that caffeine retards hair growth. I eat a quite a bit of chocolate, which is high in caffeine. I also take a green tea extract, fatigue defeating, energy pill which contains caffeine. I am 53 years old and have among the longest hair of any guy here.
Absalom
wow, that's quite a lot of hair you and your wife got there Absalom, you're very fortunate to have someone by your side to share the long-hair journey with, cheers!! :)
Haha, they do look like a couple in that picture, but they are not a couple.
oops,my bad!! :P

Chocolate is full of anti-oxidents and mood improving chemicals.
Cocoa (100%) makes a great drink!
Nice pics!
if it's true i'm in trouble--major coffee drinker here, and no weak watery see the bottom of the cup stuff either. I like it strong.
getting off tobacco is a good idea, even if it doesn't affect hair, but apparently it does. lot's of other reasons too though. trust me on this, if you are still around in 20 years you will be really glad you quit today. the first 4 weeks are a bitch but after that it gets way better.
I have always heard that myself as well but in my own case I see no evidence of the kind. I start EVERY AM with 1 or 2 cups of Coffee which is it for the day.
I would give it no worry.
i don't know about that, but i've heard it contributes to prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women
I think its ok as far as no one takes caffeine suppliments :))) heheehe ...
Yes theoritically caffeine retards hair growth due to its inherent nature of dehydrating body. So muscle builders hate caffiene. It is also said to retard hair growth ... but I think is it my a micro-meter or milli-meter I am not sure ... I think it will not make any additional benefits to quit coffee/caffeine.
