hey, slacker
you seem to know a lot about hair products and stuff, so when you said in a previous post that some of the products used to create the goth look trap moisture in, I was interested. I think my hair is kind of dry, so I was wondering what some of these products you were refering to were? Also, since you seem to be the authority on hair wax, what is it good for, and what's a good one that doesn't smell nasty?
thanks,
vhvai
It's good for big ass spikes, even with curly hair. I know people with spikes well over a foot long that are kids my age. It can hold even longer hair up, such as on ravers, members of countless punk bands, a member of the band Crazy Town, a member of (hed)p.e, and Mudvayne's guitarist. But the majority of teenagers with hair longer than a foot or so are either metal kids or just kids with no desire to spike their hair, and the same goes for older people with long hair. My own experience with it is limited to between 1.5 and 3 inches, as I didn't know about wax before I cut my 5 inch hair, and now I don't let it get much over 3 inches, for convenience.
Its good for any style or hair type where you need hold, such as short asian hair, some mexican hair, and ultra soft hair (usually blond) on caucasians, since these hair types stick straight up and out everywhere and something must be used on it to keep it down. You can spike up you hair with it, straight hair will look ultra straight, wavy will look straight, and curly will look wavy (the curlier your hair is, the shorter the spike lentgh will be for it, when it gets to long you have to make individual spikes, as in mohawk-like spikes, which you probably have to do even with straight hair when it gets over 6 inch or so). Good for having perfect short styles. Good for wavy spots, bangs, cowlicks, parts, separation, long straight syles, just anything that needs hold. People use it for braids and facial hair (goatees) as well. It remains pliable.
The better hair you have, the better wax can make it look. If you have Richard Simmons hair, it isn't gonna look like asian hair or normal wavy caucasian hair. Every hair type including ethnic, can get braids with it, as well as big spikes, but it wont look as "good" as a soft haired's. For example, everyone can "slick" their hair back with it as you have seen blacks with ponytails, but it will look the sharpest on soft hair. Try to defrizz your hair much as possible before you use wax, if you are doing it on dry hair
As for dryness, if you use a small amount of the wax you can seal moisture in, without the wax being noticeable. However, moisture will also be sealed OUT. Whatever you put on under wax is sealed in, everything over it will be sealed out, so its basically pointless to add other products, such as gel, which will just lay on nthe outside of the hair and not be abosrbed. Moisture emulating substances like conditioner and shaving cream will soften the wax and darken the hair if used over it, but will also remain visible. Water will soften it and made it look wetter (darker). With small amount of wax none of these things are noticeable except it will be slightly darker.
With no water sealed outside your hair shouldnt look any different 12 or more hours later, with water outside it will change as hair that is drying does. Water will soften it but it takes shampoo to get rid of it, and you will need to shampoo well If you used a lot of it, and make sure you get every part of the hair. Depending on how much you used you might not be able to get it all out in one shampooing, it may be a little tacky.
Beeswax is what I first used, its yellow, 2 bucks at walmart, comes in a 4 oz plastic jar. They recently improved the smell from a maybe-noticable-if-you-are-2-feet-away fruity scent to a scent I can't describe that you would have to stick your nose in to smell. However, last time i pruchased it I got the last jar of yellow, and they had a bunch of Black stocked. I dont think I would be able to use black wax in my hair . Other stores May still carry the yellow . Another is Murray's, in an Orange jar, about 2oz, 2 bucks. It has a faint smell as well, not bad, and is a little stronger than beeswax. Walmart carries something called Murray's super light which I haven't gotten to try yet, it is weaker than beeswax and might be the best for non-spike usage.
You can take the lids off and small them and touch them to see how strong they are. Of the ones I have seen, smelled, and touched, strongest to softest order is Murrays, Beeswax, Murrays super light.
Probably a hell of a lot more than you wanted to know, or maybe just not the information you were interested in. Any questions at all, just reply.slacker
