I found an interesting article about hairloss: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/05/050520172151.htm
It seems you inherit the hairloss from you mothers side rather than you fathers, so you probably should look up how much hair your mothers father or grandfather has.
I don't really know if this is actually the same for everyone but atleast it should be for some.
Hi Simon,
the original article is at
http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/AJHG/journal/issues/v77n1/42360/42360.web.pdf
and there are other articles that confirm the main findings of that group in Bonn/Germany.
A great deal of the disopsition (increased likelyhood) to develop MPB is inherited through the X chromosome, and men always get the X chromosome from their mother.
However, even if the men in your mother's family are affected by MPB or AGA (as it is also called), there is hope for you - many other genes seem to play a role, too, and avoiding smoke, healthy food, vitamins etc seem to be helpful, too.
There are still many things we don't know yet, as the scientists in Bonn themselves admit.
All the best to you, and happy growth forever unto you!
Hans-Uwe
My grandfather on my mother's side was completely bald at the age of 25. I am 53 and still have a full head of hair. So there is hope!

...they said other factors were also involved, so you are correct about
people having hope even if their grandfather on the mother's side is bald.
I have no idea what my mothers dads hair looks like. They live in brazil. My mom is 100% brazilian. My dad and grandfather all have full heads of hair though.
"The findings are also interesting for the aspect of how hair
loss is inherited. The gene for the androgen receptor lies on
the x chromosome. Men always inherit the x chromosome from
their mother. In many cases men therefore take after their
grandfather on their mother's side rather than their father."
I have some hair loss on back of my head (I don't remember what its' called), My younger brother has the same thing, only more pronounced. It seems that we inherited this from our father, although i think there is baldness on both side of my family :(

lucky for me both of my parents have very strong genes. we almost never look our age (except for my relatives who drink and do drugs). my grandmother who is still alive and her mother (who died at 103 3 years ago) are prone to growing lots of hair lol)
