As per my understanding you curly haired people have a different hair anatomy with an oval crosssection than a round cross section found in a straigh haired folks. However using gel/heat you could make it straight ... may be it will look better than the real straight hairs. However this would be too much of a damage to your hairs ... my personal opinion.
I have very curly hair, I used to straighten it during the awkward stage and it resulted in extra frizz and split ends.
Of course, it dsepends on how curly the hair is. If it can be combed out more or less straight while it is wet without pulling, then there is one safe way.
That is, to set the hair on 1" rollers, and preferably let it air dry. This will take about two hours depending on the humidity.
This is difficult for you to do yourself, though it is not impossible. Preferably you need an accomplice. A wife, sister, mom, brother, dad, friend may be able to help you. Of course the local hair saloon will have something who can do this for you, and at least by seeing it done once you will know how to do it yourself or direct another to help.
Be aware, beware, most hair saloons have a bias in showing their cutting skills, so they will offer you a cut whether you need it or not. You must be prepared to say that you did not come for a cut but for a style or a set, and possibly you will come at a later date for a cut if you need it and are happy with the work you are asking them to do today.
Their task is to make you straight without damaging your hair.
Some men can do this for themselves, and are able to feel their way even to executing a neat self front and back. Others just can't manage it for themselves, but are rarely disappointed when they ask for help. Sometimes even framily members who have criticized the long hair get on board when they get an opportunity to participate in the experience.
Of course if you have a fan on a hot day in Arizona, it will dry faster, and yes, a home hood drier on medium heat for about 30 minutes will do it.
Your hair will retain some degree of wave, and it will revert back to its base state if drenched in sweat from active sports or dancing, or if drenched in rain.
But this adventureland into the world of straight hair will do no harm, until you find the best way to maximize and celebrate your curly hair.
Whatever, do not let anyone take away the pleasure you have from your hair.

If you want to grow it really long, stay away from straightening irons, as they can cause breakage, split ends, etc. I fell into this trap while growing my hair out and am sure it is not in as good condition or as long as it would be if I had not used them. It was only after discovering this board last month that I wised up and have sworn off use of these things. All the best in future growth. David
As an added incentive to encourage you not to change your hair type, check out Neil's 5 year progress pictures in his post a few days back to see how awesome long curly hair can look. Keep it growing, David
