Hey guys!!
I've got a question... who here combs their hair in the washing process?
I mean, I've been doing it since I started growing my hair, and i do it with my sister's hair as well... I read somewhere that it is bad for the hair and that it could cause breakage (which means more sheding)...
Do you think I should stop combing my hair (with a wide toothed comb) in the bath or there's not a problem?...
Please give me all your toughts about this =) (Maybe finger combing only?... tough I also think I cause more damage (I feel more pulling) by finger combing than using a comb/brush)...
Thank you!
i comb it out after the shower when it is damp and let it dry. i use a wide tooth comb also. that's the only time i can comb it and it won't tangle. when it's dry i don't comb it because the comb always hits snags. the only thing i do when it is dry is move it around with my finger tips, palms of hands and backs of hands, especially on windy days. when it has been blown by the wind i don't even try anything because i know i will just wind up breaking hairs or worse, pulling some out so i wait until the next wash.
I do the same thing. My hair would be a mess all day if I didn't :D I did it every day when I first grew it out and it turned out alright. Just be gentle.
i forgot to mention that when it is dry, i bend over and let it fall down and shake it out by finger combing it. my snags are due to my not knowing what i was doing the first 6 mos. or so i was growing it out so there's 3 inches of bad hair at the ends that resulted from hot blow drying, rubbing and bad shampoo. eventually i will get the ends cut off in maybe 2 years.
I've read the same thing too, but I just normally comb mine after showering and let it dry naturally, then finger comb a center part. Try going without it for a few days and see what happens. Sometimes the best way to find a solution is to experiment. =)

I found out that my hair gets a lot more tangles if I mess with it in the shower. I even did an experiment. In one, I combed the hair back; it was okay while washing but tangly afterwards. In another, I washed it gently, with center part - like I usually do -, and I didn't get any tangles. My routine is like this: Fingercomb - comb - wash - let it dry - fingercomb - comb, all done as gently as possible or either it's a painful fight with tangles. That doesn't take a long time, too. Please note that it was only my technique and I don't know whether it will work with others or not. ;)
I don't comb while washing, but I do comb the conditioner thru my hair. I use a wide-tooth super-comb (the kind with the big handle), and don't pull on tangles, but work them out gently. I find this gets the conditioner worked thru more evenly. I wash every other day or every 3rd day, but condition every day. I place the towel on my head and dry the hair without rubbing. It's more of a pat-dry.
I use a very wide bristle brush (the type used for blow-drying) and find it doesn't pull on snags. I carry another super-comb to use during the day. They are really gentle on the hair. The secret is to comb nice and easy. Don't get in a hurry, or the hair whips and tangles, causing splitting and breakage.
Hope this helps!
BTW, Joao, how do you pronounce your name?
yes i have wondered the same thing.
Hi Joao David,
After I shampoo, I put so much conditioner on my hair that combs can't help but slide through fairly easily. In fact, I always go through way more conditioner than shampoo! I sometimes even apply conditioner 3 times: the first time is just to put some in and then let the water from the shower help to "comb" it; the 2nd time is when I really slather it on so thick that it makes my job of running the comb through as easy as possible; the 3rd time is just a light amount at the end, which I tend to leave in, rather than rinse away...
Also, although you probably already know this... always start combing at the ENDS, first. Then gradually work your way up towards the scalp, last, --- getting all the tangles and knots out in-between. And if I have a particularly bad tangle to have to deal with, I'll slather on even MORE conditioner to help loosen it.
Good luck, --- and have fun continuing with you growing journey!

hey david
I have long hair too It is not that hard to brush out,I get
Tangles too it dose not bother me at all,be for your showe
brush your hair out good use lots of condsin your hair when you'er with you shower Brush your hair out then your hair will not have tangles.
Wet's the only time I ever comb (and I only fingercomb).
I hope it doesn't hurt the hair much, because brushing or combing when dry always poofs and frizzes my curls out whereas doing it wet the curls stay together (helped with some gel).

no way man. I use a wide-tooth comb when washing. Its made for that. Using a brush is bad, but a wide comb will not cause any damage. There is virtually no friction, your fingers have more.
