Well, I'm a little disappointed. I've been very busy lately, so I haven't been able to post as much on the hyperboard this past month. I was busy enough to pass my REAL 2 year update by over a couple of weeks; it's really on October 15th, when I last had my haircut.
Not only that, but I'd hyped myself up to practicing more styles: French braids, Dutch braids, herringbone braids, normal braids, twist braids, Willie Nelson braids, buns with ties, buns with sticks etc... But I only got pictures of the 'basics' tonight. However..I've promised myself that I'll make another update once it's snowed again so it'll be a little more aesthetically appealing - that's when I'll show off all of the more 'intricate' styles (not that they're that intricate, but I'm still learning them!)
And before I get on with the update, I've got to mention a couple of things... The lightning - everything looks orange, I know! The flash wasn't doing the pictures any justice, so I had the camera do exposure shots, so some are a little blurry, some are a little darker than I'd like, etc. But I'm not a photographer, so it'll have to do.
Now, without further ado, I present to you, folks of the hyperboard..my 2 year and 16 day update from a 1cm buzz cut.
From the front-
Most of my shed strands are 17-19 inches in length, but it seems a little deceiving. I'm 6'6" so, in addition to the 'waves' hiding a little length, it feels like it's taking a while to creep down on me. I can empathize with a few of you here, I know James Raymond has my height beat by a few inches.
From the back-
This is one of the pictures that didn't come out so well. Notice how my hair is pretty straight until it gets to the ends, then it morphs into big curls.
From the side #1-
With all of the hair behind me.
From the side #2-
Didn't know which would be better to get a picture of; all of the hair behind me, or split like I'd normally wear it, so I opted for both.
Showing the length-
Took my 'bangs' and pulled the waves out so that it looked truer to my strand measurement. I can pull it down past my sternum if I take all of my hair in front of me and wear it like a lion's mane :)
Ponytail-
Thought it was mandatory, don't have much else to say on that one!
Braid-
This is usually how I put it up when I'm sleeping. I used to do a bun, but it's not as comfortable. This time it seems like the thickness is a little deceiving, but I tied the braid up tightly.
That's it for the new updates, but I've added some 'comparison' shots from my last update (early September I think, the first post I made on the MLHH), and from (almost) one year ago (It was on Thanksgiving, so 11 months ago.)
and the one from November 2005:
Hahaha, I definitely anticipate that being a problem down the road, but I think we should consider our great heights as a blessing and not a curse. About sophomore year of high school, I remember being 6'6" and thinking that there was no way I'd grow any taller... wrong. Maybe it's the Scandinavian genetics or something. =P
Anyway, this is a great update, Gylfi. I can only hope my hair looks as great as yours when I hit the 2-year mark. Later!
-James
my site - updated 11/01
Beautiful!
Keep up the good work.
MattT
Really amazing growth rate! 17-19 inches in 2 years is 9-10 inches per year! That's positively phenomenal! The hair looks really great also. I've been growing for 2.5 years and as you can see from my avatar, my hair is WAY shorter than yours. Keep it growing. David
o.O Look at the thickness! *runs away in jealousy*
Seriously, awesome hair dude.
VERY IMPRESSIVE!! And in only two years (OK, 2 years and 16 days). It must be the additional 16 days that really did it.
Just out of curiousity, why did you decide to grow your hair long after a buzz cut, and, what did you have before the buzz cut? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be interested in knowing. And whatever the reason was for growing it out, you obviously made the right decision. BRAVO! And keep it growing.
What a cool picture! Excellent hair, really Gylfi. And even more surprising in only two years from super short and considering your height. (Makes me feel short!)
Keep it growing of course. Good luch with everything, and can't wait for some snö pictures.
See you later, Bragi
Wow Gylfi
What you have shown us here in your 2 year update is absolutely exceptional! I had no idea that your hair had reached the point that it had. What a Long Hair sensation to have accomplished in that amount of time from a "Buzz." Bravo!
I especially like the natural look and the great v-shape in the back. The way you normally wear your hair works the same for myself. (A rather automatic thing.) And of the braids: Great!
As for the curls at the ends, my own hair was doing that also (to a lesser degree) at the 2 year mark. By 2-1/2 years and (?) months all suddenly fell into place overnight.
What a fabulous update you have shown. Thanks ever so much for sharing your triumph with all of us.
Justin~
t
great hair, looks totally awesome. reminds me of lord of the rings elves and that is a complement!
Fantastic thick hair Gylfi, you have a cool classic rock look going on there, nice facial hair too!! Keep it going bud!
I wouldn't have guessed that your hair was so amazing, would love for my hair to look like that, I still got a quite a few inches to go(about 8) by I would change my avatar to one of the new pics, these new pics are amazing, it is hard to tell from the avatar how nice your hair really is (probably the lighting). Good luck with your hair growth :)
Hi Gylfi
I'm amazed at how long your hair is for only two years worth of growth! Your hair is in really great shape and it's proper thick too. It'll be awesome when its at waist lenght.
Well done and keep it growing!
Neil
Nicely grown, especially for 2 years, your hair looks in good condition, well done!
I appreciate the response! Will make the replies here so I don't add in a flood of replies like last time.
James - I'd bet it's the genetics too! All of the men on my paternal side were above 6'6", my father is 6'8", so maybe I can push an extra inch or so in there :P I haven't changed shoe sizes in a while though...
MattT - Thanks for the comment, your hair is coming along nicely as well. Your hair looks similar to how mine did when it was shorter, so I've been following your progress with a little extra anticipation.
DavidN - Yes, I'm very proud of that growth rate! There's a few people here who still put my growth rate in the dust though, I'm pretty sure Big George was just under 10 inches per year (Where did he go anyways, haven't seen him post in a couple of weeks..)
Besides that, your hair only looks a few inches shorter than mine. It feels like it comes in really fast after it brushes the shoulders for the first time, and that's where you are now. Now all of that length is going to be creeping down your body instead of inching through the air looking for a place to rest!
Jason - Thanks! Coming from somebody with a head of hair like yours, it means more than you'd think.
Michael - I'm guessing it was the extra 16 days too. You know how that goes, it thinks the pressure's off so it starts growing wildly. But then BAM!, surprise photographs. Now it'll be another few months before I see any change.
To the question: I didn't decide to grow my hair after the buzz cut. It was just my routine to get a buzz cut every 6 months once it started getting into my eyes. Didn't really care much for hair, thought of it as a burden..go figure. So after it crept into my eyes the last time, I thought, "Well, I guess I'll let it go...", and here we are!
Bragi - Thank you! That was my favourite picture too...I snapped that shot and then was a little upset from the thumbnail; I didn't mean to look towards the lens because it distorted the hair position, but then I was rather happy with it after viewing it in full size. It made me look like a lion. And it was taken on Halloween; perfect.
Still waiting to see an influx of updates from you (though I could settle for even just one a year..), now that the hair restrictions from your old job are gone!
Jason - Thanks! I didn't realize I had a natural V until I took the photograph, it never showed up that emphasized in pictures I've taken before.
I kind of like the curls there, hopefully they're not completely eliminated after the 2 1/2 year mark.
Mr.Crow - Thank you!
helgast - I've had a few people tell me that now, and I'm definitely taking it as a compliment! (Thank you)
nuttidave - Thanks! Facial hair is gone now though. Wasn't coming in thick enough and kind of looked silly. Tried letting it grow a couple of weeks and trimming it to see how much of it filled in, but wasn't too satisfactory. I'll give it another year before I try again, don't think I'll ever be able to grow the full beard though :( I'll settle for chinstraps when it comes in better..
Dave M. - I've always had problems with Lighting. The flash always turns my pale skin into a lightbulb and puts the hair into the shadows, so I always try and get some "natural" lighting instead. Doesn't always work that way, it seems exposure is my only option. Tried to stand on my porch for the avatar picture and that didn't work very well at all! I'll see about changing it to one of these. I was using the original as a 'comparison' shot, so I could do the same thing every month and see how fast it was coming in.
I'm looking forward to your update too, and I hope those 8 inches come relatively quickly for you!
Neil - Thank you! I had to laugh at the comment about my hair being proper thick; it's like the ocean telling me that my hair looks wet, haha! I bet my entire head of hair is equal to only one inch of density on yourself. I'll never stop envying that!
Sorted - Thank you! I've been trying harder these past few months than I have been before, I've noticed some very significant improvements in its health.
Yikes, Gylfi. *wide-eyed stare* It should totally be illegalized to have hair that looks half that good! :P Wow, just wow. This is an incredible update, not so much for the length as how excellently it's suiting your face - the change from 2005 to now has been an absolute metamorphosis. You're one of those guys that looks like they were born to have long hair, and to imagine any other hairstyle on them would just be foolish.
I love how the ponytail looks, but I'm not a fan of the braid, to be honest - it looks too tight, as you pointed out it was. I'm sure looser braids look excellent on you, though.
What a wonderful update (orangeness despite:P. It'll make for an interesting contrast to the snow pictures). Keep up the supercalifragilistic work (I couldn't resist, lol).
Peace
That's some awesome looking hair!
Hi Gylfi,
with your hair, you are one of the "pillars of the community". It's a great length, it's thick and healthy, and, obviously, you can pull of several great styles. Once you have pictures of more styles, it'll be great to see them, if you feel comfortable posting them.
Well, happy onward growth, enjoy it and grow it forever!
Hans-Uwe
