I was just thinking to myself today ... "we are all special" ... we should be among probably 1-2% of men sporting long hair ... leave alone long hair atleast a pony ... that makes us really special. Proud to be a long haired ... or should I say proud to be with long haired group.

Almost all of them. Except for those unfortunate few that can't grow it, the rest are not really men. Haha!
Sorry. Couldn't resist such a good setup line. I think I heard it was 1 to 2 percent in the US. Your mileage will vary considerably based on what country you're in, and even regions or cities in a given country.
A few years ago this question was raised and I did a survey, which was to stand in one spot and count off 200 adult men passing by while also counting how many had long hair. Most places in town I got 2 to 3 percent, but there were variations: In the Haight Ashbury I got 14 percent and in the Financial District I got 1 percent. This was all just here in my town, San Francisco.
At places where there were lots of out of towners (such as Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate Bridge), I got that same "typical number" of 1 to 2 percent, so that seemed to be where "middle America" was at.
When in Iowa and Minnesota at about that time I got lower figures, and when in Montana I got higher ones, so there are places where the norm of 1 to 2 percent varied some.
These numbers would vary depending on how you define "long hair" of course. I used the "falls on your shoulder" definition. I also found there was typically another similarly-sized crowd who had "longish hair", which I defined as hair too short to be "long" but long enough to run afoul of some workplace hair codes.
One also had to define "adult men", which I took to be anyone who I was sure was male and who had reached puberty. And to be counted they had to pass close enough by that I could tell whether they had long hair or not.
Long hair had reached a low point in popularity at that time, so the numbers I got gave a good indication of the diehards - the "born longhairs". Now long hair is clearly more popular and we would surely get higher numbers. Any of you want to run similar surveys where you live and report back to us? Just count off 200 adult men passing by where you are, while also counting longhairs. Divide the answer by two and you'll have your percent. (I used 200 instead of 100 because I found 100 gave results that were too inconsistent.)

Depends on what part of the country your in. Im from michigan which the 1 to 2 percent statistic fits. However in Colorado about 20 percent of men are longhaired.
However I live in New york city now, and if you count below the shoulders I would say its 30 percent in the city right now.
10 years ago when I was living in the South in Georgia I can recall only seeing 1 longhaired kid in school.
My site
30% in New York is truly awesome! Hopefully, since fashions trends start in cities like New York, LA, etc., it'll spread elsewhere. I was in the mall in Halifax having a cup of coffee this AM, and it must have been a REALLY bad day, because in 1/2 hour I saw exactly ZERO NADA ZILCH longhairs walk by. Normally it's not that bad but this morning beats the cake for a bad longhair day.
Thanks guys for sharing this info !!!
