hi,,ive been growing my hair for a few years now and come to realise its never going to reach the length i really want[waist].so ,should i have extensions?..its a big deal to me as ive always wanted very long hair.
you could get dreads. i dont think their is a terminal length for them.
Dreads are a very bad idea. because if you'd want to change hairstyle you would have to cut them off. Plus I hate dreads.
How many years have you been growing it? How old are you? I don't think extensions are that good. I believe that they would damage the hair. I have this theory on them. Since hair grows at a slow rate, the follicle gets used to the weight of the hair as it gets longer. But if you add a significant amount of hair through extensions, it would just stress it out too much thus damaging it. The physics of hair extensions--as I call it. I hope I was helpful. I just don't like the idea having to glue extensions onto my natural hair.
Growing your hair long takes a very long time. It grows average 6" per year. I am not sure how long you have been growing out your hair, but "if" it has not grown any longer in 1-2 years I would tend to know you have reached Terminal length for yourself.
If this be the case, "Extensions" will definately make your hair look longer, but there IS a trade-off to consider. The biggest being that they will wreck the ends of your own hair. Once this happens "Extensions" can be tried again and wreck your once healthy hair once again.
Good luck in what you decide.
I grew my hair out for almost 5 years and never got beyond 14",thats my terminal length, much less than I wanted,so I decided to go with extensions. The glue on extensions are VERY BAD for your own hair, and also VERY expensive! I opted for clip-on extensions. I use 24" extensions, the longest I could get, they add fullness and length I always wanted!!. The only drawback is that they have to be removed every nite, but you can use as few or many as you to get the style you want for the day.

...are usually for actors who need to have longer hair quickly
for the character they are playing.
If you can accept the possible damage extensions may cause it's up to you.
As I always say, the most important thing about having hair long, short
or whatever is your HAPPINESS.
If your long hair GOAL is not possible because of genetics, etc., and
IF you really WANT to have waist length hair then the trade off may be
worth it for you.
Of course, your real hair will continue to grow so eventually all of the extensions
will have to be redone. How often? I don't know...
...but I wouldn't think it would be more often than once a year.
So consider your HAPPINESS first and then make your decision.
Good luck!
what i've read is that getting them put on professionally (these are the semi permanent glued on ones) costs around $3000 (that may be the price in a high end NYC salon). Besides that, the other big problem aside from any damage is that you have to have the process redone every 6 months or so because they fall out as the hair they are attached to naturally falls out.
