Hi guys,
I have been growing my hair for a while now. I really like long hair on myself and would like to go for the maximum length possible. (Whatever my age of 53 will allow)
Recently, at work, a younger, rather attractive co-worker (who remembered my short hair days) commented that I looked much younger when I had short hair, and also that long hair looks good on some guys.(implying that it doesn't look good on myself) You can see what my hair looks like from my avatar picture. (Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of my short haired days.)
I was wondering if long hair does not suit certain facial types? I have a long neck myself. (In my own opinion, my neck looks even longer with short hair) Again, I have NO desire to cut my hair--I am only seeking opinions as to whether certain facial types are "more suited" to long hair. Any and all thoughts are appeciated.
David
Hi David,
you are right, if your neck is longer than average, you are clearly better off growing your hair long. And, dress shirts with a (high) collar might sometimes be better than t-shirts.
Young people usually think that people look younger if they sport a fashion that many young people sport today. Since long hair currently still is a minority thing among younger guys, discrepant styles are seen as creating an "older" impression, whether they were short in the 70's, or long in the 80's. And, a slight amount of grey strands is more noticeable when the hair is long - of course, there's nothing wrong with it.
I'd say, just continue to sport a style that feels right for you. We have a saying: "It makes no difference to an old German oak if a saw rubs her back against its trunk." (with apologies to you, because 53 is not old ;-)
All the best, and happy growth!

Dave,
I think long hair suits every facial type whatsoever, some people throw the "long hair doesn't suit everyone" excuse at you just to give you an incentive to cut it (either for jealousy or for whatever other close-minded reason). Others genuinely don't like long hair on you.My point is, if YOU are satsified with long hair and genuinely believe that long hair suits you,you should be able to shrug off negative comments IMMEDIATELY (besides having a good laugh).hope this helps. :)
Hi David,
Gee, I hear the same thing all the time and I've come to the conclusion that what some people are trying to pass off as fact is only an opinion. It may be a majority opinion, but still only an opinion. What is more important is how you feel about yourself. I happen to like long hair, and I think everyone looks better with long hair.

Let's see...so, someone gave you a backhanded insult about your hair. Let me guess--an accountant? drives a minivan and is completely dressed by Lands End? thinks going out to a pond, dropping a hook in the water and sitting there for 5 hours is a jolly good time? Okay, sorry; I know a lot of people like that and ...damn.
I'm one of the ones who thinks long hair doesn't work for everyone but in your case I disagree with your coworker, and vote that it works okay for you. people seem to either hate long hair or they love it. I've gotten rave comments from some women; others say nothing (I guess they're being polite). I think it's interesting that people who say they don't like long hair will be all gaga over Mick Jagger or some athlete with long hair. anyway, i've given up on trying to figure out the psychology of the hate or love hair thing. I think it's pretty arbitrary and irrational. since, in my case everyone who doesn't seem to like it are people I never wanted to hang around with anyway, i kind of feel like long hair is liberating me from all the people who's idea of a good time is studying an IPO prospectus. I got cold shouldered by a guy yesterday--my immediate thought was, "Ah, another one down. Good riddance." I think you're going to start finding out who your real friends are. I rather enjoy that myself.
Hello Everyone,
I have heard that one before, it is a manipulative statement by someone who would rather see most men have short hair. This jerk makes you believe, that unless you are Fabio, or some other top model or rock star with long hair, it doesn't suit your face type. In this jerk's mindset, only certain face types can have long hair, and usually it is not your's.
Do not fall for this, and you can tell the person, (esp if a female, who claims to have better knowledge of facial types), that her long hair doesn't suit her, and that shaving her head would bring out her features... that stops the conversation dead.
I had a male colleague telle me that at work, and he told me that shorter hair would suit my face. I simply told him I don't buy that crap.
Sometimes it helps to be a bit firm with people who are manipulative.
Many people have this obsession about "wanting to see your face". I feel hair is part of one's face, and once the "awkward phase" is gone, it is out of one's eyes, and really looks good on the great majority of guys who take care of their hair. The only time long hair doesn't go well on a guy or girl is when it is not properly maintained.
Have a nice day,
Georges in Montreal.
Hi guys,
I appreciate the feedback from everyone. I almost fell for the oldest trick in the book. A younger, attractive woman (around 35) was probably using the old "you look older trick" which can be a sensitive topic for older guys around attractive women, to try to "pressure" me into cutting my hair. Sometimes comments like these can be harder to take than the direct "you need a haircut" comments. I just need a thicker skin.
This is in regard to a post you made a couple days ago concerning bedhead that I just noticed.
Here's a neat trick I read on the internet some years ago that works great.
Instead of your regular pillow case, purchase a SATIN one. I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond. They are very slippery (and feel really nice) so the hair just seems to slide instead of getting really messed up.
Give it a try.
