My hair is getting to the length where it starts moving around everytime I turn my head, and so I've been considering using a hair spray or mousse to keep it neat and in check during the day.
Does anyone have any suggestions, for example, brands or ingredients to look for (or to avoid)? Anything would be helpful.

I'd just try to avoid sprays that contain lots of alcohol or other organic solvents (I know, that's difficult). Rather, just use mousse or pomade, the best ones are found in shops or sections that specialize in "African" hair styling products.

Thanks for the advice! I live near Ypsilanti, where there's dozens of "African" hair salons, so I should have no problems finding what I need.
Do you mean Ypsilanti/Michigan (near Detroit) or Ypsilanti/Georgia? (I was able to exclude Ypsilanti/North Dakota since they have fewer inhabitants with African ancestry...)
