Allow my wife to fool around with my hair :). Her hairstylist gene overcame her last night and she decided to play with my hair, and see how I look with "short" hair.
A fancy idea then struck me... Let's do a "simulated" hair growth... She then "re-adjusted" my hair to make it look "longer".
This, I think, would be an equivalent "one month" growth from the "short" style :)
Hello Ugly Betty....I love your hit show!
Is that really you? Why would you let your wife mess with your hair? You know they want you to have conformist hairstyle... especially asian women...
Yes, that's really me, no doubt about it! I did not read that much into my wife's innermost intentions :). We were just having pure, good fun, and she's just testing her creativity out on my hair.
She's very supportive of me growing long hair. Although she expressed her liking of a "more varied" hairstyle, not simply having long hair "all the time", she understood my desire to keep long hair and displayed utmost support. She had "defended" me more than once in front of bigoted outsiders or relatives who commented negatively on my hair and even got angry and took offense with some of their harsher comments.
Even if she desired a "varied" look, she decided further to grow out her own hair (knowing that I love long hair on both guys and ladies). She's a terrific wife to me and I have absolutely no doubts about her intention whatsoever on putting up the display in this series.
There're indeed good girls out there, Tai Fu :))
Regards,
Jin
I would rather die than let anyone cut my hair... I dont understand why half the chinese these days thinks all guys have to have short hair even though none of the ancient chinese ever cut their hair. I think even CONFUSE-us said not to cut hair... its pretty confusing.
Same here :). I think the key is self-expression vs. conformity. Having a unique image, different from the "rest" is certainly paving for yourself a difficult route. That's why, people go with the flow, it's smoother, and then lose themselves along the way.
Think about it this way... They are the pathetic ones, not us :).
My motto is: Be yourself, and exude confidence, even the nay-sayers will eventually find you charming.
Every once in a while I see a comment or thread around here that jumps out at me as containing really strong positive content. This is one of them. 8^)

sorry Jin but I imagined Singapore to be very strict and its society would not really favor very long haired men. How is the actual situation there now?
While long hair on men is BANNED in the 1960s (it's in fact, illegal to have long hair for both Singaporeans and Foreigners then), the said law was banished in the 1990s.
Although one can rarely find Singaporean men with long hair (a major reason being all men are liable to be recalled for military service every year), the government do not really care much on men keeping their hair long. Society wise is still conservative on that but the younger generation is usually cool on long haired men.
So Singapore has relaxed herself on self-expression over the years.
Long hair used to be illegal in Taiwan during martial law, or so I heard. Men could be recalled into the military but for 2 weeks at most, and they dont cut your hair during those recalls. Not everyone get recalled, especially those the militarly wanted to get rid of (heavy criminal record and stuff). Of course the ban on long hair died along with martial law, and now there's a rule saying that schools can't place hair restrictions on their students. Some school (especially the more prestigeous ones) have restrictions but they can be challanged if someone wants to.
Short hair is still a must in our schools, and the military. Strict haircut rules are still in place in educational and some governmental institutions. In fact, I was asked to adhere to my scholarship company's "haircut rules" when I went for my interview. I subsequently wrote an impassioned letter to them and they allow me to keep my hair, as long as it's within the boundaries of the university's statute (which I've flipped through and did not mention anything on hair length).
My only concern now is what will happen when I graduate and have to begin serving my scholarship bond in one of the research institutions.
Well, can only keep my fingers crossed...
How many other men do you know in SIngapore that wear their hair long??
Not many, in fact, I personally know only one other guy, who has hair similar to mine (both in length and in texture). He's a fellow student of my Uni.
kept his hair for his late girl friend
Once in a long, long while, I'll see men with hair longer than mine on the streets. The most recent one I've seen is a man with well-maintained, straight and silky butt-length hair, which I couldn't get my eyes off his beautiful mane.
I used to see this man in my neighbourhood with a similar butt-length hair, but have not seen him for the past few years already. There's also this student at my Uni who has long hair, but is usually tied in a folded ponytail, which is difficult to discern its length.
In any case, long-haired men in Singapore is RARE...
"6 months" hee...
"One year", LOL...
"2 years", looks real :)
"3.5 years" :o, looks tribal, hee...
The real me... hope this pic did not cross the line of "nudity", :->
Hi Jin ,
Good to see you are enjoying with your hair .Wish you all the best with nice and growing hair down your butts .Did your your wife do any hairstyles for you which you can share photos of
Bye ambrish
Although I might come across as a heretic here, but I think I like your hair somehwere in the hypothetical stage btween '3.5' years and as you have it right now.
Great idea though!
And how did you do it? By pinning the hair, using wigs etc.?
Yes, you're absolutely right :). I've trimmed off 8" in-between. If I had allowed my hair to grow without trimming, I should have butt-length hair now (or longer).
My wife simply lifted my ponytail, over the top of my head and secured it there.
The "length" was adjusted by pulling my hair further forward over my head to achieve the "desired" length :).
So what you actually see in the "short pics" was the ends of my actual hair (which looks dry... sigh...)
We had good fun last night :).
That first pic is not a good one for people with weak hearts!
When I first saw that, my heart skipped a couple of beats. It is good to see you did not actually cut it, but just having a little fun.
Absalom
That's exactly what I thought Absalom, good fun stuff Jin, keep enjoyibg it!!!!
The header nearly gave me a heart attack - don't do things like that!!!!
However when down it looks good.
Allow my wife to fool around with my hair :). Her hairstylist gene overcame her last night and she decided to play with my hair, and see how I look with "short" hair.
Omfg. I nearly got cardiac arrest.
LOL...there are guys here with weak hearts, you know :P
but thanks for the fun pictures! Apparently, your wife loves not only you, but your hair as well - that's a great good omen for your marriage - may it be happy forever!
All the best!
Hans-Uwe
P.S. I have heard that at least one of the two major universities in Singapore (if not both of them) has long-haired male professors these days - great!
On your PS, I do not recall meeting any long-haired male professors in my university (by the way, I'm from the National University of Singapore (NUS), the "other" uni's Nanyang Technological University (NTU), we've got a third uni recently, known as the Singapore Management University (SMU), opened in 2003).
My desire is to eventually secure an academic post in one of our local unis, and I think, I should then be one of the more "stand out" long-haired male academic there, if not the one with the longest hair (if I have the chance to still keep my hair then :)).
Anyway, I've been a teaching assistant for the past few years and my students refer to me as the "tutor with the long hair".
Hi Jin,
my mistake, it was not a professor, but a teaching assistant and/or doctoral student in the psychology department of NUS (I don't know his name, though). By now, he's finished his work and is back in Germany. Well, he does have long hair that he wears in a pony tail.
In your case, I'm absolutely sure, you will receive your professorship AND keep your hair! However, independently of the hair issue, you might need to spend some time at a different university in a different country in the course of your carreer - but hair won't be a problem anywhere, I suppose.
All the best, both to you and your wife!
Hans-Uwe
Thanks for your very kind words! No problem about that mistake. I gave a second take when you mentioned about long-haired professors at our tertiary institutions and I thought the chances would be good (in finding long-haired profs). Probably, my circle of acquaintance at my Uni's still not large enough, there could probably be long-haired profs somewhere :).
Finally, I must comment that your posts always puts a smile on my face and I think you're a very well-learned man (who knows many languages and speaks them fluently). You're surely a good model for the board members here and I look forward to further conversations with you in the future.
Thanks :).
Jin
