What do you do about the hair on the back of your neck? Do you let it be or shave it? I noticed that I have two trails of hair going down the back of my neck the other day after I got out of the shower. The last time I grew my hair out I had an undercut and went in to get the sides shaved about once every three months so I really didn't get this effect. I'm going in for a bottum of the back trim near the beggining of next year (I should have more than 6 inchs worth of growth by then.), but after that I'm on the fence about what to do about the trails.
I carefully shave them every week - or even more often if I want to look especially 'tidy'.
Well, looks like I'll have to go in for that bottum of the back trim a little early. I got a job at a security company today and they made a comment about it. At least they're cool with long hair. I saw one dude with a bun.
Hi Emmerich,
I doubt you'd need to trim the back just because of a remark. However, if you do want to trim the lower end of your back hair anyway, you could do it earlier than planned, I suppose. Just make sure you got a stylist who is reliable - ask other long-haired male customers first (and, make sure your "reference" is a bit "fussy", i.e. discerning).
The rest I have said already...
Good luck, and happy growth!

Thanks for the advice. This was absolutly necesary, though, as the higher up is apparently mean spirited about neck hair. I had to get it done today or bust. I'm well aware of the tricks some shops try to pull. "Are you sure you don't want layers?" lol I just told them straight up what I wanted until they got the picture. It turned out quite nice. Wish I had my digital camera on me. My hair looks alot longer now than it did when I took the pic in my avatar.
"Are you sure you don't want layers?"
Good for you for turning them down. Layers are the kiss of death to successfully growing long hair, especially for men.
My hair is looking like yours did in october 2004. I hope it turns out half as good as your hair is now. I think I'm going for the same style. The part has gradually (and naturally) moved closer to the center now.
TIPS:
*Dampen your hair. Next, push or comb the hair at the back of your neck straight up, exposing your hairline.
*To see your neck hairs well, take a hand mirror and reflect the back of your
head into another mirror. (A bathroom mirror will do nicely).
*Use a disposable razor and keep it wet at all times.
* Now, shave upwards toward your hairline. Rinse razor frequently as it will keep getting glogged up with fine hairs.
*As you approach your hairline, shave more SLOWLY to avoid making mistakes.
* You do NOT have to shave right up to your hairline because you are really
only trying to clean up your your NECK area. So leave a bit of space between
your hair line and the fuzzy neck hairs.
*Finally, rinse and dry off your neck and let your hair back down. You're done!
*NOTE: how often you shave your neck will depend on a number of factors:
For instance, if you have fine, light colored neck hairs you will not have to shave as often
as someone who has dark, coarse neck hairs.
Since the objective is to have a "clean-looking" neck, let
your mirror
be your guide.
Good Luck!
