Does anyone here know how the beard is compared to head hair?
Is it about the same terminal time (ie number of years it grows before being dropped) or is it less?
I'm wondering at how long I might be able to grow my goatee.
I saw a guy last weekend with a goatee that went down to about the lower part of his ribcage in a braid... I want that :)
I was wondering that as well. I am sort of thinking that the terminal length depends. For example, one of my friends, has had a goatee since he was 15 or so ( he's now 23 ) and has never shaved it off, or trimmed it, yet it stays nicely groomed at around 1 to 2 inches or so. I've talked to him about growing it out, and he told me that it never grows past the length its at. Then there are guys like Victor, who's beard goes down to his belly.
Its very mystical. But it would be cool to know more about this topic. And Mesmerized, definatly go for the "lower ribcage" goatee man, that would be rad!
I sure hope that mine can get a lot longer than that!
But yeah, it does seem a mystery.
Also I've never understood why your beard continues to develop for so many years, instead of being as it will always be once you're an adult...
Like, my chins are pretty much beardless, and I've got nothing right under my lower lip where most people has some. It's strange !
Well, having reached terminal length in both, I can report that my beard terminal length is longer (23 inches) than my head hair terminal length (only 18 inches). But only a few hairs on my chin get this extreme length, most of my beard maxes out at 12 inches or less. (Right now, I am at about 10 inches length in both).
I think most guys will have longer terminal length for their head hair than for their beards from what I have gleaned from this board and from beard boards.
It's alright for the beard lenght to be shorter, then your hair and beard can be the same lenght cause the beard starts off so much lower on your head!
If my beard gets to 23 inches, I think I shall be very happy :)
Wow, do you have a picture of your terminal length beard? I'd reaaly like to see it!
Hej hej! Stefan, if you do grow your goatee long enough to braid like that it will be the coolest and most badass thing ever, and its badass-ness will only be exceeded by its coolness. Seriously, however, I do not know the answer to your question. Personally, I think that my beard grows slower than my head hair, but have no idea about terminal length for a beard as I have never exceed four inches of beard growth before trimming. If you do indeed go for the chest length goatee braid, I may follow your lead, because I have been tossing such an idea around for some time and seems that it would be fun to try such a thing. But worry not, as sea-separated as we two are, the novelty and uniqueness of it would not be lost for you ;-)>>>>>>>>>
Also, you might do well to post this question on the beardcommunity.com message board as lots of those fellows have a good bit of beard experience. They are a good bunch of fellows. I read there a good bit but seldom have time to post there. It is easy to post picture there just like here.

I'm definitely going for it. I've let the goatee grow since January, so I'm nearing one year on it. I haven't actually measured it, but I asked my father how long he'd estimate it to be, and he said it looks like around 7cm (2½in) but when I stretch it out it's more like 10-12cm (4-4½in).
Yes, my beard curls up as well as my hair :) You just don't see it as much. It makes it appear fuller, so I guess that's good.
I think you should go for it, would be wicked!
Alright, I might check into that site!
Det gør vi!
I've had a goatee for about 6 years now and the longest it's been is around 1 1/2 inches. It took a while to get it to that length, however some people's facial hair grows faster (I have a friend that can grow a short goatee in 3 or 4 days, but for me it takes around 2 weeks). In reference to your question, I think it would take (very rough estimate) a couple years or more to get to that length especially if you want it braided because braiding is going to make the length shorter. In short, it will take a very very long time to get your beard to that length.
The guy I talked to who had the very long braided beard said he'd been growing it for three years, to prove a point to his father. (the father had said that because of his genes, he wouldn't be able to grow a proper beard ever). I guess he proved the point.
Do you trim it at that length? It sounds a bit weird if it just doesn't get any longer.
Yes, I did trim it at that length. I just didn't like it much longer because it doesn't grow strait down. The hairs grow at different angles and it gets very bushy looking which I didn't really care for. Recently I've been keeping it very short. However, I'm sure it would get much longer if I just let it go.
I am reasonably sure that the beard grows a bit slower than head hair. I grew this out from a goatee 3/4" to 1" long since September 2005. It has gained 6 inches of length in 14 months. The longest strands (when gently pulled straight) are slightly over 7" long.

Terminal beard length varies from male to male and is determined by genetics. On adverage the human male's beard grows 1/4 inch per month ( some faster, up to 2 inches per month, and some slower.) Beard growth, like hair growth runs in a cycle. Each hair grows, rests, falls out and then is replaced by a new hair. Each hair runs on it's own cycle so as not to have all of them fall out at the same time. The cycle for beard hair runs somewhere between 1 year, at the low end and 7 years, at the high end. Of course ther are exceptions. There are some genetically blessed individuals who have a faulty gene that does not tell the hairs when to stop growing. These men theoretically can grow beard to unimaginable lengths.
Upon reaching terminal length, (which for most men adverages somewhere between 12 and 18 inches) if a male wishes for greater length, i.e an x-treme beard, then he can allow the hairs to naturally dread. The world's longest beard, grown by Hans Langseth, measured 17 1/2 feet. It was achieved by the dreading process.
