I'm in a dilemma. I'm growing my hair long again, but I'm not sure if I should keep it straight or put it in dreads. I've never had dreads before; I might wanna try it at least once. If I get sick of dreads, though, can I grow them out, or do I have to cut my hair short again (That would suck.)? I'd also like to know from other caucasions with dreads, how people react to them. Also....I work at a grocery store; will dreads cause problems at my job?
If they have been in a short time, like a couple weeks, then they are still dreads in training and you can probably get them out without ruining the hair but it may be damaged. If they have been in much longer, if you are even able to get them out at all, the hair will be shot, and you will need to cut it. You should try having your hair braided and see how you like it, if you don't like them you probably won't like dreads, and they dont harm the hair at all. They are also more "socially acceptable," perhaps even more than lose long hair. If you get dirty looks with braids you will be sure to get even worse looks with dreads. I don't know what grocery store you work at but here in Illinois they don't have any hair "rules" per se but you might get pressure. There's lots of long, greasy haired white guys and black guys with big afros, or greased hair in braids, Snoop Doggy Dogg style though, so it shouldn't be a problem. The chains here are Shnucks, Kroger, Cub, Thompson, and Festival Foods. Defintely isn't gonna score points with the boss though so defintely try the braid thing. I personally don't have them but the people I know with them get disgusted looks from most adults and lots of younger people. Some of them don't take very good care of them and some do. You would for sure want to keep them neat and clean once they were past the fragile, dread-in-training stage.
I thank you for your response. I've decided I wanna keep my hair straight so I don't end up cutting it off when I change my mind about having my hair in dreads.
There is a gut who works in a grocery store near my home who has dreads about 8 inches long. He wears them pulled back into kind of a ponytail. So, it seems to be OK for him. But your situation might be different.
