hey guys
my hair is just about like, collar bone lenth
its fairly straight, but i have to shamefully admit i tortue my hair with hair straightners
but i regulary trim it so its not in completely bad condition.
i was just wondering, does hair get straighter the longer it grows?
also
as its resting on my shoulders, whenever i wash it and it dries, the ends tend to kink up (does anyone else have this happen?), perhaps after its past my shoulders they'll straighten themselves out?
thanks for any replies and taking your time to read this.
I would suggest stopping use of straighteners as they WILL damage your hair. It is true that longer hair gets slightly straighter due to the weight of the longer hair pulling it down, but naturally wavy/curly hair will always stay wavy/curly, etc. Don't expect perfectly straight hair. Again, it is best to let your hair be and let it grow naturally for the healthiest and eventually longest/thickest hair. Hope this helps.

Straighteners will damage hair...ESPECIALLY if it's not done properly (have never straightened my hair so can't offer feedback on how to do it properly)
about the kinking up...I wouldn't consider that a problem..I have noticed that as my hair grew longer, fewer and fewer of my hairs kinked up (almost all of my hairs tend to get wavy at the ends though). I think wavy hair is just as beautiful as straight hair...just let your hair do it's own thing for now..and you will reap the rewards later on! :P
Since your hair is mostly straight to begin with, as it grows longer.........especially if allowed to reach mid-back lenght or further it WILL be quite straight. (Gravity will make sure of that as well as your hair clearing the shoulders by many inches.)
I would myself get rid of that straightner which ruins hair that has to be trimed-off only to have the cycle repeat itself again over and over.
Longer hair seems straighter because the flips are further down. Also, the hair near the top gets a bit of a gravity assist in straigtening out. If your hair is wavy like mine, you'll like it a lot better once it's longer. You can also use a leave-in conditioner such as jojoba oil to give it a bit more weight, which might help it to hang straighter, but your ends will still probably be a bit wavy. Also, a leave-conditioner will actually be good for your hair. Straigtening damages hair. I seem to recall one guy here who looked like he lost 25 percent of it due to straigtening. Think about what you're doing--you're heating it up to the point where it actually changes the shape. That doesn't seem like it could be good, and it isn't. It's like metal fatigue. Keep bending a paper clip back and forth, and sooner or later it breaks.
Mine tends to do the same thing - flips up at the shoulder. My wife calls it the "Marlo Thomas look". I plan to just tough it out until my hair gets past my shoulders.

mine when wet is straight down my back some, then as it dries it lifts back up which sounds like what happens to you. in addition to the ends curling around, in my case, the bottom 3 inches or so were the earliest growth, back when i didn't know what i was doing, so they're all messed up from bad shampoo, agressive rubbing and hot dryer air. as they get pushed farther down, the newer hair is straighter because of gravity and (I hope) better care. my plan is to eventually, when the bottom is a small % of the whole, simply cut off the bad hair. i hope it's something i can do myself when it's long enough for me to hold it up in front of me and snip it off. I'm thinking i'll be able to do that in 2 or 3 years. last time i checked i'm right at average growth rate.
i have tight curls that have gradually gotten looser at the base...but that's it. i'm thinking of cutting it off and regrowing it because the ends are kinky...but from the base to the first 2 inches it looks very tamable =/ i haven't noticed any straightening between the ends and the roots though aside from the first 2 inches but that might be do in part to my change in diet these last few months.
