Hi, all. I'm an ex-regular who last posted around the board in early 2003. This board and Bill's site were the absolute most helpful things when I was growing my hair the first time around. Then I did the Bad Thing: got it cut and had a "normal guy" hair cut for 3 years. Thing was, I never felt like my natural self during that time. People said I looked neat, but I always felt like something was missing. So in January I decided to start down that road again. A little while later, I've come back to the board. A few names look familiar, if my memory serves right (Redwolf, CerebralAssassin, etc). Anyhow, I know it'll take me some time to get established, but better sooner than later I suppose.
I'm in my early 20s and next week I have a job interview. The company is known for not having business-conservative dress codes, etc. Although I'm obviously going to wear a suit for the interview, one thing does have me worried: my hair is in that wild, awkward stage once again. It's too long to be considered short, but it will NOT fit into a ponytail, a common practice for this sort of thing. The picture is where I'm at now. My hair is currently pretty well behaved, not often poofy, but it has not been trimmed in 6 months. I know Bill's page is very adamantly anti-trimming. I'd just like to ask some opinions: do you think a quick neatening trim might be in order for this type of occasion? Or do you think I'd be okay with it the way it is as long as I make sure it stays well-behaved? Any advice, even advice I probably don't want to hear (I'd rather not mess with it if it can be avoided) is welcome. Thank you and I look forward to becoming active on this board again.
I think you look quite good, myself. If you want to try something different, try a gel and wet look. That might give a little more control, a little more classical look. But honestly, you look fine to me, and quite at homein the suit.
Best wishes for the interview. Let us know how it goes!
Robert
Here goes nothing! At another forum where I asked this question, a lot of people are saying to just go the safe way and get it cut, which really makes me nervous...but my inner instincts are whispering that I shoudl at least give this a shot with the hair intact.
i wouldn't do anything except make yourself look like you do in the photo because I don't think you look all that much "out of control" yet. if there's a way to check the place out in advance and see what people who work there look like that would be a big help. otherwise, i'd just go into it like you are and don't bother with a trim. if they are reasonable they should accept your appearance. if they think you look like some kind of marxist revolutionary creep freakazoid then you wouldn't want to work there anyway because they'd be way too uptight, not only about hair but everything probably.
Good point there...if these people are going to quibble about my hair more than my work character, do I really want to be there? Also, a few others besides you commented similar to: "your hair isn't really long yet, it's probably still considered acceptable." This would be a reassuring perception; as it would mean I needn't be so worried.
Looks pretty good as is...a minor trim isn't going to make much difference anyway.
Personally I would slick it back using hair gel to give it the stiff professional appearance ( it may be bad for the hair but a one time deal wont have a dramatic effect)
Hi and welcome back.
My opinion? All 4 posts beneath this are excellent thoughts that I think are the correct choices. Good luck to you in your interview.
Once I got very short notification of having to go for a job interview, within the space of about an hour! I went to the local supermarket, bought some gel and applied great globs of it to my hair in my car in the carpark! Not the nicest thing to have to do but it worked.
My hair was in the awkward stage at that time. Got the job!
Wouldn't recommend gel ongoing though....
Good luck,
MattT
Yeah, I've noticed a few responses saying gel at the beginning, then lay off it. I might give that one a shot.
hey mark,
it's cool that someone remembers me from way back (2003)...even though I hadn't discovered this board until earlier this year!!wow!!I must've made my presence felt years before coming here!lol
on a serious note...I don't think your hair looks messy at all..but..just to be on the safe side...I would take some gel and slick it back!! :)
welcome back by the way..
whoops... for some reason your name rang a bell when I saw it on the board! My memory is playing tricks on me. Thanks for the advice - it looks like I'll give the gel a shot.
More than I expected! It looks like the consensus here is split between: put some gel in it, or nothing is really necessary. I'm going to try out some gel and see how it looks. I appreciate all of your advice.
Please post some pics when you do. I, for one, enjoy seeing the various ways one can style their hair at various lengths.

Hey dude, welcome. It doesn't look too bad from the pic so it really shouldn't be an issue.
If they make it an issue, tell them you can tie it back when that's possible.
