I was just wondering who here is striving to grow their hair as long as it will go? I've never thought about doing this and have only grown my hair to a length just barely above my shoulders in the past, now my hair is a short cut that was done for good measure to get rid of those highlights once in for all. I just don't know how I'd personally look if my hair can grow past my shoulders or not. Which is why I have the other question of how much time and effort it takes to keep it looking good. Although I always want the best for my hair, long or short.
Thank you!
ps. Who here has already gotten to their goal?
Me.
Water Only twice a week, I try to at least finger detangle daily. I'm not quite making either of those right now, so the hair is staying up in a bun most of the time...plus I am moving so everything is dusty and nasty. It takes more time, effort and attention than at short lengths, but definitely not anywhere near in proportion to the length.
Terminal at mid-thigh. I'd like longer, but the genes say no.

You will never know unless you grow it out.

My hair does not take all that long to groom. To minimize tangling, I keep in in a ponytail with 10 hair ties at about 4 inch intervals. (See pic.)
Washing it does take a long time. It takes 2 1/2 hours to wash and dry it.
My original goal was waist length which came and went a long time ago. It nearly reaches my knees now. (See pic.)

Me :). At least for now.
I didn't know how I'd look either before growing it out, and when I'm in the thick of the awkward stage, I didn't think it'll get pass my shoulders. But I toughed it out and see what I have now :).
The only solution to your question is to let your hair grow, you'll get your answer eventually.
I used to wash it daily (during the time when my hair is short). Gradually, I spaced the washing out to alternate days, thrice per week to the current twice per week (which is supposed to be the "ideal" frequency for long hair). You just gotta hunt for a suitable shampoo and be willing to spend a tad more time with hair care. Remember, shampoo strips off hair's natural oils, which could lead to dry, brittle and lifeless hair. So always use the conditioner after shampooing, and AVOID those 2-in-1 shampoos.
My pleasure to share with you :).
Not in a short while :).
Ideally, I would like the longest length possible, As I'm 53, I don't know what I can achieve, but I now yearn for waist length hair. I had long hair back in the late 90's, which grew at a fast rate and was near mid-back--I probably could easily have achieved waist length then. Sadly I cut it off in 1999 and starting growing back in 2004. I don't have the same growth rate now (my goal of waist length may be unrealistic), so I really regret not taking advantage of my fast growth rate when I was younger. My suggestion to anyone who wants really long hair--START YOUNG-DON'T WAIT until you're over 50!

I have no intentions of ever have my hair cut again...and will let it grow as long as it will. However, I likely have the MLHH Board Record for the slowest growing hair ! It is now past my shoulders and very little fussing is needed.
I know my hair is pretty slow growing as well--maybe even slower than yours. (How long have you been growing?) My avatar picture was taken in October (2 1/2 years growth and not from a short haircut) and the length is certainly not very impressive when you compare to RickG (2 years 8 months) or ChrisG(18 months) Sometimes I get really discouraged by this when I see other guys with much faster rates but I WILL keep growing it--as long as age 53 will allow me! I really yearn for waist length or longer.

hehe..slowly but surely..you're creeping up (or should I say creeping DOWN? :P) to your goal length..mine is pretty slow growing too :(
I am looking for a mid-back length; just below the bottom of the shoulder blades. I am 52, so that may be as long as it will grow; time will tell.
I'm hoping for mid-back which i consider average typical long hair.
Well, my goal is 40 inches (measuring from the front hairline) and this would put my hair at about belt-length. I've changed my goal to a longer length several times already but I'm pretty confident that's as long as I would grow it. This all assumes I have a terminal length that would reach there.
Hey Ex Blond. My hair is at terminal length (mid-back). I wish it would have grown longer. BTW, PLEASE don't ruin your hair with dyes and bleaches this time, and don't let any girls talk you into cutting it. Keep it growin' and flowin'

If I can get there I'd like to get to waist length (not lower), but I'd be happy at mid-back (with hair DRY, not wet, meaning probably another 3 or 4 months)as my 'maintenance' length.
My goal changes all the time! : ) A couple of years back it would have been to get my hair about where it is now. Now I think I would like to get my hair to about hip length, so I'm a couple of years off at least. It is starting to appear that I could be reaching my hairs terminal length, as my hair is growing much slower than it used to. I'd be happy at settling with my hair reaching the upper part of my waist (around the bottom of my rib cage area) though.

My goal length is about mid-back...I'm 5' 11''...so i'm guessing that'll take about 20-25 inches of hair to achieve that...:)
I'm going to see how long mine will grow, so I don't have a goal as such. I had a scare about a month ago, though. The dr. said my white cell count was too low, and ordered a bone marrow test. It turned out negative, however, so there's no danger of me losing my hair due to chemotherapy.
I will most likely grow my hair to its termial lenght at least once in my life... It's like a life goal you know... I love long hair and feel so complete with it... I only hope mine will get longer than waist or butt lenght or longer than knee lenght... what a dream that would be =) =) =)
And... pacience will be a virtue =)
For many years, I kept my hair at hip (or classic) length. Then one day I asked myself "why am I doing this?" I haven't had a trim since! If long is good, longer has to be better (;-)

I have which is to the waist, but I am letting it continue to grow because I want to see what is terminal for me. However, if it grows past butt-length, at that point I surely won't be cutting it. No way!
I've always wanted it to about mid-back, and upon growing it out at aroung age 50 I found that is about as long as it would get with substantial denseness anyway. Now out of curiosity, and for a new challenge, I'm seeing how long my beard will grow. It's four inches long now.

I hadn't thought about it too much, but if I were to pick a goal (for at least now), probably chest or shoulderblade length. After that, who knows...
It was fun to see what everyone's different answers were for this subject and I learned some things while reading all of your posts. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see if my hair can pass the shoulders and then decide if I want to continue or not from there. It'll be a little while before I have to make that decision anyway.
Thanks Everyone
I'm just letting my hair grow. If at one point I decide I liked it better at some earlier stage, I'll just trim it back, but so far I keep liking the way it looks as it grows.
I'm letting my hair and beard just grow as long as they will.
Not really much more time or effort on maintenance.

My goal is to have it a few inches past my shoulders, and able to get it in a ponytail nicely.
my ultimate goal is to be able to put it in a nice bun with hairsticks. I love that style
It all depends on what your definition of "striving" entails. If it includes a "need" to grow one's hair it indicates that there may be some level of obsession there which is seldom healthy; on the other hand, it it indicates that an individual merely wants to grow it out to "some random length" and enjoy the journey and results, then that's where I'm at.
I made that journey once about 30 years ago, and again about 20 years ago. There was a bit of a blunder in between, where I lopped most of my hair off for a (ex-)girlfriend; but that blunder also taught me who I am relative to having long hair -- I feel better with it long and I look better with it long. The stress I was under from having it short just didn't sit well with me, so once the relationship was over I started growing it again.
I can't honestly say I've ever had a "goal" length. I've got terminal length now, and have had so for about 17 years. That's also why I can't post "progress pictures" -- there are none.
