hi folk,
well, I've been using pantene shampoo and conditioner the entire period that I've been growing out my hair (I've used garnier fructis too, don't know if it has cones in it or not).
well, needless to say,I'm not very pleased with the results..pantene has made my hair very dry!!arrrrgh!!what I'm trying to do now is to get all the silicones outta my hair...I was just wondering if anybody here has had a similar ordeal and knows how to go about getting these cones out of one's hair..is shampooing enough?any feedback would be appreciated!! :)
I was wondering if you know which products (not containing cones) you plan to use? I have been using Aussie as well as Pantene (think both contain cones)--didn't realize they were that bad for hair. My leave in (Infusium 23) also has cones. I obviously want to use products which cause the LEAST amount of drying out of my hair (and dry hair leads to breakage)
Thanks,
David
I'm currently using VO5 (as suggested by shin) ,it doesn't have any cones in it..I don't know of any other brand that doesn't have these..if someone knows please do let me know! :)
Hey cerebral , i feel your pain brother. i am having the same quagmire. i recently stopped garnier because of these dammed cones. i switched to aussie but it dries my hair too much. today , i purchased alberto vo5. i got the extra body conditioner with collagen , and the herbal escapes purple shampoo. hopefully, this'll work , otherwise i will have to seek some professional help. damm it sucks to have wavy/curly hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
hey man, I appreciate the support...this is probably the first time in my growing out phase that I'm so pissed at my hair..:P I'll just grit my teeth and bear it :)
by "seeking professional help", I hope you don't mean "going to a hairdresser and cutting it" ! You could consider going shampooless for a period of time and see what happens (in addition to swearing off cones)..it might do the trick, since shampoo has ingredients that dry out the hair...I wish you good luck my friend..take care :)
L'Oreal SMOOTH-INTENSE Shampoo and SMOOTH-INTENSE Conditioner
work very well together.
Follow this with a bit of L'Oreal MELTING Gel and L'Oreal Liquid Spray Gel. These
four products have been of great help to me for years!
...for some reason, Pantene products never worked for me.
I for one have nothing against the silicones. L'Oreal Melting Gel
has them and it's a fine product that I use as a hair dressing rather
than as a gel.
Hey there. I may be the person you need to talk to, as I think I'm currently the only person on this board that doesn't use silicones in my hair at all, and I've been on this method for about a year now (Bimclunk was on a very similar method to me, but I believe he's off it now).
There are a number of "cone-free" products on the market, such as the Suave Naturals line (which I use), the VO5 Moisture Milks line (I dunno about the rest of them), and a number of organic shampoos and conditioners. That said, I don't use shampoo on my hair, as the majority of shampoos contain extremely drying agents that apparently are also present in dishwashing fluid, making shampooing your hair with them akin to dishwashing it. I believe the offending agents are the sulfates, but whatever the case, shampoo was drying out my hair a great deal, and when I stopped using it, my hair improved vastly.
The cone-free method I'm on, or maybe the cone-free method in general, is called the CurlyGirl or CG method. Genders aside, it can work wonders for your hair, but, as its name implies, its geared towards those with curly hair, and seems to work better the curlier one's hair is. My hair is very curly, so it's a godsend for me, but your hair isn't nearly as curly, so I'm not sure you really need the cone-free method. Pantene is generally demonized on this board, so I think what you need is a different product, not a product without cones. If you stop using cones (or shampoo? I'm not sure which one), your hair gradually becomes curlier, until it reaches its natural state of curliness. I'm not sure you really want any of this. Try Garnier or Aussie or something - those both have cones, but many people on this board use cones with no bad results, and this includes curly-haired people. There's no point wanting to get "cones" out of your hair, as they've been there long before you started using Pantene, unless you were previously using organic hair products.
If you want to remove the cones anyway, I suggest clarifying your hair; shampooing your hair is pointless, as regular shampoos already contain cones. So, removing the cones can be done with a clarifying shampoo or conditioner, which can be bought at a store; it can also be done with a natural clarifier like apple cider vinegar, which is what I use once a week and a half. If you use the vinegar, ensure that you dilute it a bit (a quarter of what you use should be water), and feel free to use a bit of it over your hair as well as your scalp. Be aware that clarifiers, particularly the shampoos, can be very harsh, so don't leave them on your head for too long. You'll use them the same as you would shampoo, and they'll remove just about all the build-up on your scalp. Keep in mind that not all cones leave build-up; some, like dimethicone, I think, wash away in water, but some definitely stay on your scalp until you remove them.
If you want more info about these cone-free methods, though, google curlygirl or just ask me. HTH.
hey man, I appreciate the tips. like you said, the "no-cone" method may be unnecessary for my hair type, but only time will tell if that's true..i've decided to adhere to this method for a month or two to see if it does the trick..:)(oh, btw,I DO wan't wavier/curlier hair!!! :) )
Well, good luck, man. Make sure you clarify your hair first before stopping using shampoos/cones, or the cones will still be in your hair, and you won't see any improvement. Also, your hair may not feel that great at first, since it's so accustomed to cones; give it a bit of time, like a few weeks, and don't get discouraged.
Peace
I have NO idea!! *Pantene is the reason Why i've had to take up maintenance cuts* So good luck, and sorry that I can't help much other than suggesting maintenance cuts until your hair starts acting normal again! Good luck and Gratz on ditching the 'cones
Shin
please excuse my ignorance, but what's a cone? any mainstream shampoo that doesn't have it?
cone is a short word for "silicone", it's basically any ingredient that has the suffix "one"..like dimethicone, etc.
really, it's a controversial issue...some say silicones 'coat' the hair, preventing the hair from absorbing any sebum/moisture...which results in dryness.others say silicones work fine with their hair (like luckskind, see his post)
I'm basically "on the fence" so to speak :)).I intend to use cone-free conditioners for a period of 2 or 3 months to see if it gets rid of this excess dryness I'm currently suffering from.
the only shampoo that I know of that doesn't have cones is VO5 :)
I use Aussie "Miracle Moist" Shampoo and conditioner. I just ckecked the bottles and there are no cones in it. So theres another product you could try out. I've been using it for about 4 months, it's good stuff : )
so Jin, do you know of any cone free shampoo I can buy in Taiwan without emptying my bank?
