My name's Kevin, and I'm finally going with my desire to grow my hair long. It's only been since September since my last haircut, so it's not that long yet, but the back is pissing me off - it's growing too fast and I feel like it will look like a mullet soon. Is this going to fix itself?
Here's a picture of my hair. Does my hair look like a good canidate for long hair? Is it straight enough? Thick enough? I really am fascinated by these topics and I want lots of tips and opinions. Mucho thanks!
Welcome Kevin! Yes, it will fix itself, but before anyone gets long hair, they go through the so called "awkward stage". This stage is arguably the hardest of the hair growing process, due to the doubts and reactions of those around you. But with time and patience, your hair will end up looking great! As for your hair, yes, it's a good candidate for growing it! Anyone's hair is. So keep growing it, and once again welcome to the board! I think you'll like it here.

Approximately how long does this phase last? I've been growing my hair for almost 4 months now and I've definitely arrived at this stage. Plenty of cowlicks at the ends and it looks disheveled even after I comb it. I can't wait until it gets some length...

Go to the Links section and check out Greg Lovern's page. It has a nice description of the awkward phase.

Thanks for the link, Mouse. I guess I'll have to be patient and wait a year or so. ;)

I'd say it depends on the person and how heavy/thick their hair is, because what gets you out of the awkward stage is gravity. As hair gets longer, it gets heavier. This is why hair tends to get straighter for some people as it grows longer. For me, it lasted almost a year but I didn't take good care of my hair for most of that which made it look bad. Again, it depends on the person's hair. Either way though, keep your hair growing, and don't trim it, because as many users on this board have mentioned, trimming annoying parts of their hair only made them go through it again. Patience is the best remedy for the awkward stage. Hope this helped!

My hair is fairly thick and slightly wavy. It doesn't look bad (yet), but I've recently noticed that it's more difficult to manage. Almost like it has a mind of its own!
Note to self:
Do not trim hair. Ever. :)
Thanks for the advice, Mihnea.
Later,
Jon
...although I prefer long hair all around than a mullet on myself,I like seeing mullets on other people..Shawn Michaels back in the day had a mullet (before he grew out all the hair).Anyway...this is offtopic..
you certainly won't look like you have a mullet if you let the back grow...that's IF you let the rest of your hair grow :P just let it all grow man, trims here and there are only gonna extend the awkward phase..
Welcome aboard brother. Your hair seems like the perfect candidate. It seems straight and has a decent amount of thickness. Just grow it and do not cut it. At first , It'll seem messy and look awkward. That is called the awkward phase/stage. You'll notice some hair strands will start sticking outwards and your hair will have the mullet look. This is good because when you do reach your goal , You will have the natural V shape every long hair likes(with the exception of a few). Once you reach your goal , You can trim the ends to remove splits or to even it up with the bangs. Good luck to you and keep it growing!!!!!

Your hair will look good long, don't woory. As for as the hair on the back of your hair, it starts lower, so it will seem longer. If you measure it, it probably is not much different the the rest of your head.
Take care,
Bruce
All will be fine as long as in the beginning 1-1/2 through 2 years you just let your hair grow on its own. All by itself it evens itself out.
Avoid haircuts at this time.
All your hair needs to be perfect is patience and a smile.

Take care of your hair really well and you will be glad you did. Some tips:
- Don't comb/brush too much. If you reach a snag, don't just pull through it. Stop and undo the knot with your fingers. Unfortunately, that was my problem... I combed too much. And now I have a lot of split ends.
- Don't use too much shampoo. Only a small amount is necessary.
- Use conditioner. Leave it in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it out. Conditioner protects and moisturizes your hair and makes it look better.
- Be gentle with your hair.
- Don't color, bleach, straighten, curl, perm, thin out, etc. your hair. That stuff just isn't good for it.
- There are a lot more tips than this. I'm just giving you some of the most important things.
- Be patient. There's a period called the "awkward stage" when the hair might look weird/poofy/flippy/whatever. You'll have to wait through it. It's worth it in the end.
As for the back growing faster... Everyone has a lower hairline in the back, so the hair in the back will be "longer." After a year or so, you might want to trim the back to make the length more even.
