Hi everyone,
two weeks ago I decided to let a very good friend of mine, who's a stylist/hairdresser, trim my hair a bit. She only cut a little bit in the back to even it out. She didn't touch a hair of my bangs or upper head and I'm really pleased with the result.
I'm no longer into that "stay away from scissors" thing anymore - there definitely can be situations during awkward stage which demand a little trim to make it more bearable - at least for me :-) And I don't think this little trim will have any negative effect in the future. (I still intend to grow it longer!) Hope I'm right in this respect...;-)
I updated my gallery with some photos, see link below. Comments are welcome!
Best regards,
Alex
Alex,
I know what you mean about having the back trimmed. I had my back trimmed about six months in.
You hair is looking great and will look very nice as it contiues to grow out.
Mike
It looks good, AlexN. Do have some special lighting or is your hair always so wonderfully shiny? Full of lustre without looking the slightest bit greasy. Very nice hair. Good luck keeping it growing. (And I am glad to see you kept the sould patch. I have always liked it, but last time I said so I remember others commenting less positivelty about it.)

Hi Shawn,
thanks for your nice comment. No, there's no special lighting trick or anything like that, it's just that I washed my hair today :-) Three days later, the shininess is gone, welcome grease... :-) And be sure, I won't shave the "soul patch" (where does this funny word come from btw?) because of comments on here... :)
Alex
Not sure where the term 'Soulpatch' came from....I've only known that area of facial hair, unsupported buy a beard or goatee to be called that.
<">The soul patch is also known as a tuft, stinger, Attilio, royale, scruff, impériale, fanny tickler, blues beard, love tuft, blues dab, bebop, liptee, clit tickler, cookie duster, womb-broom, zif, taint-brush, pussy mop, cadillac, mouche (French for fly), meat scratcher, mosca (Spanish for fly), crab-catcher, soup catcher, flavor stripe or flavor-saver.<">
Does this help?

Your trim came out looking good. I think the problem with trims in general is that unless you can find someone that you can trust, you'll end up with something you did'nt bargain for.
Bruce
Totally right. I knew I could trust her - she's one of my piano students and she's regularly trims the hair of some other long haired guys I know.
Hi Alex,
Congratulations! Your hair's coming along great and the trim certainly seems beneficial. Your hair has great shine and thickness, and may even be getting naturally straighter with the extra length. Do you have a goal length? Keep up the great growth?
David
You're right, it seems to be straighter now, funny, ain't it? But the greasier it gets, the more waves come back...
Hey Alex,
Keep up the great growing!

Hey Alex,
I fully agree with your above statement: it's what works for YOU that counts! As for myself, I experienced the much dreaded "awkward stage" twice: the 1st time was when I first grew it successfully long in the early '90s; and the 2nd time was after I made a stupid decision to cut my long hair all off in Y2K...
During "Awkward Stage #1" (the early '90s), I did a lot of trimming and had it re-styled several times, --- it made the experience a whole lot more bearable for me at the time. I also used a lot of gel, hairspray, hats, you name it... ANYthing to help me get to the ponytail!
"Awkward Stage #2" (after the Y2K cut), though, was a totally different experience... I just didn't care how "bad" (awkward) I looked: I just wanted my long hair back! So, oddly enough, I had VERY few trims, used gel almost never, and didn't bother with hair spray or hats, --- I just wanted that hair long, and wanted it **quick**!!!
BOTH methods worked, --- so, whichever makes it most bearable for you right now, that's the one I recommend!!

Looks good man! No need to regret the trim, I had trims like you describe, and I didn't regret it.
Keep it growing!
Hi Alex,
it worked out really well for you, you look great, and it's growing and growing! You obviously did the right thing (one limited trim after more than a year), in the right way (reliable friend who only would take off 2-4 cm in the back). Congratulations!
By the way, are you ever doing concerts in Northern Germany? A good (long-haired, of course) friend of mine just loves Jazz including the more modern kind (I'm a bit more traditional, and I'm listening to ragtime on www.kdhx.org right now). In any case, if you ever make it to the northeast, please drop me a note. I'll do likewise if I make it to the Southwest; I did notice your concert schedule.
Happy growth! (und, vielleicht schaffen wir's ja mal, uns über den über den Weg zu laufen ;-)
Ich wünsche Dir ein frohes Fest, frohes Wachstum, und brechend volle Konzerthallen!
Hans-Uwe
hi hans-uwe,
thanks for your nice comments! unfortunately, i'm mostly playing in south germany; only occasional gigs more than 200 km away - and those are mainly corporate (i.e. non-public) gigs.
but if you're around here in karlsruhe anytime, feel free to contact me.
regards frohes fest & guten rutsch!
