Hi again everyone,
I saw my doctor this AM, and yes, I do have some of the early signs of MPB--he does think propecia would benefit me. However, my hair loss is fairly mild for age 53. He is setting up an appointment with a dermatologist, unfortunately, the wait is about 6 months now. Hopefully, the saw palmetto I am taking will cause any hair loss during the waiting period to be mild. Another sign of hope is that my shed rate remains low (no hair on pillow in AM, lose very little hair in the shower or when drying hair, etc.) I also came across some pictures of myself taken around 4 years ago with short hair and my frontal hairline didn't look much different then, another sign of hope. (although I don't know what my hair was like in the crown area back then) Sorry for the long winded post but a couple of guys here said to give them an update on the doctor's visit.
David
I´m amazed that you have so much hair left at the age of 53. I´ll probably be bald at 40! :)
Hello David:
I wouldn't sweat it. You'll probably have quite a nice head of hair for the rest of your life, considering you have so much now at the age of 53. I'm sure many folks wish they have as much hair as you do at that age. Really man, try now to worry about it. I'm sure you're not going bald.

Hi David,
I have much the same thing going on in the crown area, as does my younger brother. The ray of hope is that I know I was a little thin up there 6 years ago when I last had long hair and I don't think it has progress significantly. Unfortunately I have no pictures to check against.
Take care,
Bruce
Hi David,
Its good to hear there is some hope for your hair and that the dermatologist will help you out - I'm pretty sure your hair will be able to hold on for another six months : )

Hardly a lengthy post compared to some of the ones I have seen. I wouldn't worry about its length in the slighest.
So glad you saw the dr. and have a good idea now just where you stand. Not knowing is always the worst of all.
Sounds as if there is much hope involved here. Thanks for giving us this update.
All the best to you. :-)
Thanks again for the support from everyone. Naturally, the waiting period to see a specialist will be a little difficult--the sooner I can get on Propecia the better, but hopefully any hair loss over the next 6 months will be minimal.
As an added comment regarding my earlier posts about slow growth rate, I now seem to be accomplishing some decent growth from that when my avatar was taken two months ago, possibly related to my "better" hair routine over the past few months, and a full three months after stopping the use of straightening irons in September. I plan an update in January, three months after the avatar picture, and any comments will certainly be welcome at that time. Perhaps some day my dream of waist length hair will be achieved! (I would even be happy with mid to lower back for now if waist length is out of the question.)

was just wondering how much does it cost to take that med. im 35 and i've noticed i've started to thin a little
and was going to see a doc about it.
Hi Joe,
In Canada, we do not pay for doctor's visits, as it's covered by our medical system. The drawback is that the waiting period to see a specialist can be very long. However, drug costs are not covered.

In the U.S. Propecia will cost you around $50-$55 per month.
Long winded? Ha! That was hardly into the akward phase!
I am really glad that your concerns re: MPB are treatable and that they appear to be so far very mild. Great that you have such little hair loss (pillow, shower). I think, from your pics, that your hairline looks fine - I'd never have guessed MPB, but you know yourself better and I am glad you have taken the initiative to nip it in the bud.
Wishing you all the best,
Shawn (Mr.Crow)
I think the hair loss you'll have in the next 6 months will be insignificant to nonexistant, since you say you take good care of it and noticed less shedding.I'd be concerned too if I were in your shoes (my hair means a lot to me)..but try not to worry too much...I know a lot of people your age would love to have the thickness of your hair.take care and good luck!!
Hi David,
you might not yet need Propecia. It's expensive, and you'd probably have to continue forever.
I'm in my late 40's, and I'm doing fine with vitamins TWICE WEEKLY:
B-100 (contains 100 mg of B-1, B-2, B-6, and niacine)
Zinc 50-60 mg
folic acid 5 mg
vitamin B-12 1000 micrograms = 1 mg
Biotin 5-10 mg (DON'T take with undercooked eggs)
Vit. E 200-1000mg
iodine 400 micrograms (DON'T if you have a thyroid gland overfunction)
If you don't notice any improvement after six months, then I'd stop the vitamins and try propecia IF there's a true problem.
I think you have great hair growth!
Hans-Uwe
Hi Hans-Uwe,
Thanks for the suggestions and postive feedback regarding my growth. I currently am taking the B-100 (which includes B-1, B-2, niacinamide, B-6, pantothenic acid, B-12, folic acid, and Biotin) plus a daily Saw Palmetto tablet once daily; maybe all I need to add is Zinc, Vitamin E and Iodine. Since the waiting period to see a dermatologist is around 6 months, this would be a good "evaluation" period. My main concern is the possibility of losing hair due to MPB, I don't want this to advance any further.
