I don't want to offend anyone here and this is NOT personally attacking ANYONE. I love this hyperboard so far, you're all nice and welcoming. So nobody, DO NOT TAKE IT PERSONALLY. PLEASE.
But that being said, how long is too long for a guy? I think that long, limp hair like some people have - as in past a few inches below the shoulder - is out of hand. It just looks like long strings of yarn hanging from your head. Don't you want some (don't wanna sound girly but...) volume or something? A nice neat 1" below the shoulder cut looks much better then long, noodlelike strands down the back IMO. What do you all think?
At the very least, I want my hair long enough so that I can put it in a pony tail and it'll go limp. I would say it's almost there, but frankly it still has a mind of its own because it's not long enough. Also, the bangs aren't quite long enough either, so some of it comes out of the bunch and hangs out around my ear. Shoulder length is my other goal, and if I'm lucky, both goals with go hand in hand.
I'm not sure how long is too long, frankly, and I've given it some thought, but never really came to any conclusion.
Whatever looks good, I suppose, but I'm not cutting it.

Well I don´t want my hair to be any longer than mid-back. I think that, or slighly shorter, is the best looking on me. Though I admire people with longer hair than that for their devotion.
I think it's really a matter for the man in question to judge for himself. Ideas about what looks good can be very cultural (I remember doing quite a few double-takes when I lived in Japan) and change with time (my mother ironed her hair because wavy hair wasn't in fasion when she was in high school).
Our notions of what a "man" or "woman" is supposed to look like are very ingrained in our thinking. I remember being told many times that my hair was "too short," and my mother even told me I should start getting it professionally cut/styled to improve my chances of getting a job (I buzzed it myself for years, as short as a 1/2 inch).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that a guy should be true to himself and grow his hair to a personally satisfying length, not worry about what others think, whether that's an inch past the shoulders or an inch from the ground.
Mouse
I think thats very true Mouse. I may want it mid-shoulders, the next guy may want it mid-knees, and yet the next guy wants a nice shiny head! I was brought up to not judge a person on their appearances whether it be long hair, large nose or, wrong clothes.
Bruce
Both very good points.
I happen to like long limp hair, noodlelike is good, LOL! I find that sort of hair attractive on women, which I suppose is OT on here, but I also aspire to it myself (well, actually, I suppose I already have it, but I want it longer!). If you don't agree, then don't grow it!
I happen to have hair that is fine, thin and wavy. Now, I'll admit that thicker hair would look better at this length, but I just don't have the genes for it, and with my hair type when it wasn't long it was completely uncontrollable! The weight of long hair is the only thing that makes it stay put. So, from my point of view, it was actually 'out of hand' when it was shorter.
I also think that the saying "never judge a book by it's cover" carries a very important message.
As to the original question, too long is when you trip over it, IMHO, but I don't think mine will reach that length anytime soon. If I really thought I could grow it that long I think I might actually trim it to classic length, which is basically just long enough to sit on, but I can't truthfully see even that happening.
That just depends if you have super thin hair. Thick hair will look a lot more full.
I think everyone has his/her ideal length. In fact, some people would strive to reach their "ideal" length no matter how their hair looks.
so..how long is too long?that varies from person to person...but the common thing we all share here in this board is that we want to be different.all short hair looks the same.long hair takes on life and looks very different from person to person.that's what's important...
and about wanting volume...I would hardly consider that a "girly" desire...because so many girls these days are using straighteners. And we all know that straightening irons KILL volume...
I used to think my hair was too long when sitting on it became problematic. Then I learned from this board that I was just experiencing the "second awkward stage". Now I consider too long to be more like tripping hazard.

It is all up to the guy to decide what he likes best for himself and is happiest with.
Depends on the guy. My hair is waist-length, and has been for the last several years. I've concluded it's reached terminal length, and am happy with it. I wouldn't mind longer hair, but I don't think there's any such thing as too much length.
For some of us, no length is too long. I prefer to let my hair grow to as long as it will get. This ia a photo from a long hair meet in August 2006.

Thats Awesome Scott .......Regarding the question no such thing as to long in my eyes !
Axel
And all things being the same, his hair willlook longer even if it IS shorter than yours!
(That one is a lady if I remember the pics posted earlier)
Never too long! I intend to grow it as long as possible, if I can get it to my waist, that's what I would really like. (Don't know if my genes will let me though)
David
ok
There is no such thing as too long for a guy, same as there is no such thing as too short of a girl or just about anything of that type with the word "too".
Remember that some people have thicker hair and some have thinner hair. Some have a lot of volume, some have little. The hair doesn't have to be thick, or blonde, or curly, or straight, or whatever to look good. I guess it's a matter of opinion again, but I wouldn't, so to say, "count out" anyone with a different type of hair.
Also, 1" below the shoulders is not very long, it's actually quite far from the terminal length for most people :)
My hair is thin, maybe even noodle-like. But I like it. So I guess it's whatever a person likes.
If you look around you (on the street, not on the Hyperboard) you'll notice that most longhaired men have their hair at shoulderblade to mid-back length. Besides the awkward stage we all know about for hair shorter than that, hair that is longer than that is also more awkward and requires more attention, and face it, most men when it comes to dealing with their personal appearance are lazy. Also, few men will let fashion get in the way of living an active lifestyle. More women will, and that is one reason you see more women than men with really long hair.
I'm NOT saying that there is anything wrong with longer hair of course! But if you have "will I look like a girl" issues, you'll find yourself in the company of a lot more longhaired men if you don't grow your hair longer than mid-back.
Bill
In my opinion there isnt no such thing as how longs to long unless you are joining the marines, navy, army etc etc etc its just an expression of speech also used by guys that choose to wear there hair short to !!
Axel
I have no volume to my hair and yes I would love some volume but its just not going to happen! I haven't reached that below the shoulder length but when I get there I may end up agreeing with you (for me only though). I am still quite awed by amazing length of our more illustrious members but I am not sure that I would grow that long either. But apparently that attitude changes as you pass the goal. Just out of curiousity how long is your hair, I would be curious to see a pic of yours so I can see what you were talking about.
At just about waist length, I've been thinking that perhaps it's getting too long. I haven't been annoyed enough yet to trim it though. I think that if I can find a comfortable braid or bun style, I might never cut it again. If I can't then waist length may be my personal limit.
